Mary Jane might have first appeared in ASM #25, but she is first referenced in ASM #16 -- the classic first meeting of Spidey and Daredevil. In that story, Aunt May tries to convince Peter to at least meet the niece of her friend Anna Watson, who's named Mary Jane. And in the very last panel, Spidey bemoans having to listen to his aunt again try to fix him up with "that Mary Jane chick".

Great video. I had that comic where MJ first showed her face. Nobody ever talks about the comic that she was in with Peter alone in his apartment after Gwen died, Peter was berating her for just being a "party girl" with no real deep feelings for anyone, that she could never understand how he felt at the loss of Gwen. Last panel, Peter is bent over crying, MJ, with tears in her eyes closes the door to the apartment .. still inside. Such suggestion! It effected my young self strongly. Nobody ever talks about that comic.

Something I love about the Stan Lee and Steve Ditko/John Romita run is how it go against the tropes of the super hero comics of the time. Usually the main love interest would already present in the hero story from the start, like it was the case for Lois Lane and Selina Kyle. Mary Jane on other hand only meet Peter later in his story, giving more time for Peter to grow, with the story focusing Peter having other relationship before he and Mary Jane finally become offical couple, giving a very realistic take on relationship in super hero stories.

The reason Mary Jane eclipsed Gwen was because Stan Lee claimed his wife Joan was the inspiration for Gwen. He began to write Gwen as a perfect woman, and future writers were afraid to give her any flaws, for fear of upsetting Stan. (Who had become editor-in-chief). So Gwen became boring. The Mary Jane character allowed the writers to have fun, making her quirky and uninhibited. That's why the 1970s creative team wanted to kill off Gwen and focus on MJ.

The Daily Bugle has a nice history too you might want to look at. The first superhero connected to it was the Fox from MLJ Comics in the 40s. Strangely, in his secret ID he too was a photographer for the Daily Bugle. Wonder if we will see a "blink and you miss him" shot of JJJ as a copyboy in those stories. 🙂

About a year ago I was working my way through the original Amazing Spider-Man issues (via the Marvel Masterworks collections) and was shocked to see MJ was basically a sitcom trope, the unseen oft-mentioned character who somehow still exerts influence on the protagonists (e.g. Vera from "Cheers" and Maris from "Frasier"). But the tiny kernel of romanticism in me found it charming that MJ has always been there, and was seemingly destined to always be "the one" for Peter.

Cissy Ironwood was basically Peter's Marvel Team-Up gal, created so we could see him engaging in civilian activities, without doing anything to contradict the main book. idk where else to say this but I'm not a fan of recent change of making MJ a reporter or scientist. I feel like as supporting cast member she has a very interesting spot as an artist. Peter is surrounded by reporters and scientists already. So having someone who is emotionally intelligent makes sense and makes for a unique dynamic. Spectacular Spiderman probably has my favorite MJ. I would honestly love to hear your thoughts on this matter and get more insight.

I like TSSM Spider-Man's MJ too. Having her start off as a trusted friend to Peter and Gwen is a nice way to show that she does care about both of them and the way that she helps people is endearing. And I liked that she was mature there. It's definitely a big change from 616 MJ. I think EVERY adapted version of Mary Jane deviates from the source material though. I'd argue it's often for the better. In the comics she shows up with a conceited, flightiness that was intentionally there to make her cause DRAMA in the friend group. She wasn't attracted to Harry at all but dated him cause he had wealth (and didn't care if he was uncomfortable with her being flirty), and she was catty and unpleasant to Gwen (unnecessarily taunting Gwen about Peter appearing mentally ill at Gwen's birthday party is a standout moment for me). She really just didn't have much regard for being nice to anyone in the early years. I don't really like 616 MJ and feel like she just shapeshifts conveniently/inconsistently into whatever role the writer wants... It's interesting since adaptations usually do something entirely different with her than the comics. I like the Raimi version cause she's still an aspiring actress but they don't have her be conceited, and they took her troubled homelife and made it intrinsic to understanding her (the comics retconned that to explain her flighty attitude). I feel like making her a scientist is a complete 180 from the Mary Jane whose interests are nothing STEM related in the comics (it's probably drawing from Gwen's interest in science) and the reporter thing is just mimicking Lois Lane.

Parker Luck, indeed... I'm surprised Sasha made it through this entire ep with NO mention of Archie, Betty and Veronica (which would make MJ Cheryl Blossom, I guess)! I can't express in word how much this character means to me.Her personality and strongness are important to show how a female figure in comics can be so revolutionary . I think that in the origin writers want to make her so different from the other girls for this reason. She came from an abusive family and tried to survive to this with a mask of superficiality (we know her party-gal era). After Gwen's death(I can't stand her sorry) MJ began to show all the potentiality that Stan/Romita/Conway saw in her.The thing is not just that she loves Peter,is that she can understand his pain ,because they both hide their true soul behind a mask. They hide her initially to prepare a BOMB of character😂😂❤

Apparently Ditko was a big fan of the objectivist philosophies of Ayn Rand, so he wrote Peter to have the same outlook on life during this period. Since this idea means valuing reason and knowledge and rejecting altruism, it can look quite heartless from a modern perspective - Marvel even lampshaded this in a recent Spider-Man comic where Peter looks back on his college years (basically he's remembered as "that know-it-all who never kept his promises and thought he was better just because he was smart") and effectively says to himself "Boy I read WAY too much Ayn Rand; there I was thinking I was intellectual and turns out I was just a jerkass!"

To be fair, when it's first used the 'friendly neighborhood Spider-man' line is meant more ironically in contrast with his snark and his bad reputation. It's a bit like how everyone calls Peter a shy wallflower when one look into his inner monologue tells us he's anything but. That said in earlier issues of the run, Ditko and Steve do balance each other out well till Steve reportedly left more to Ditko and the tone gets more hostile.

Inhave a fun tidbit for you "The time Scorpion went to Canada to dodge the original superhuman registration act in 1989 despite already being a registered felon" he gets mind twisted by a demon that's fighting Alpha and Omega force and kills someone for rushing him in a public bathroom. And also shows off superpowers out of the suit.

It's part of the priginal Acts of Vengrance arc which jas such gold as "Reed Richards(oh how times changr) and the NRA argue to Congress that thr registration act is wrong while being attacked by minor supervillains" and "Loki sabotages his own plan by informing Magneto that yes, that *IS* the original Nazi Red Skull, not the communist or drug dealing imposter." Presumably because he thinks it would be funny.

I LOVE your Spidey voice. Actually, I love all of your voices, but Petey is one of my favs!

Jameson on that screen reminded me of Cult of the Subgenius, for some reason.

"Aunt May. You're an evil mastermind!"

My favorite part of this gag is that this is *not* the first time we hear about MJ we actually have aunt May pretty consistently trying to set up Peter with her but he intentionally dodges every single attempt which is hilarious in future context

The spider identity remembers that trash talking while fighting the symbiote in the dream & thinks I should let this creature have him

I've read all of the Ditko ASM run and past that up until a bit past the time Gwen died. I really did find this visual gag funny. I loved that Peter was a bit aggressive/obnoxious in the early days.

I remember the episode of the 60s cartoon based on the Spider-slayer issue.

I... I think that the post-timeskip Ben 10 series might have had an episode that was inspired by this anti-spider drone thing. Even down to a news pundit who vilifies the protagonist projecting his face from a screen on it.

Steve Ditko during his Spidey run, cleverly kept hiding MJ's face ..up until John Romita Sr. took over drawing Spidey, finally revealed her face .

Spidey is a real Jerk. I been rereading 73-74 run ASM, and so far he stole news papers and someone McDonald's burger.

Ditko’s Peter was more of a menace than Jameson who is more of a menace than Spider-Man who was less of a menace than Aunt May!

Mmmm, I love a fine segue into the sponser. I remember this issue. There is another plot used a few years later that has a robot with a JJ monitor for a head, I guess they liked the idea.

You know in the SPIDER-MAN (2017) they also hid Mary Jane in a tiger mascot and mention her in passing until the third season she actually made an appearance. Also could you do a Flash Thompson retrospective given how he was Peter Parker’s bully, an Army man, paraplegic, and Agent Venom.

Peter Parker's love life was a wild ride in the early days. I'm surprised he garnered so much action with that squeaky voice. (No shade intended; I love your PP voice! 🤣)

While I knew of the earlier appearances, I was unaware of the size of his harem at the time. The dude had serious game.

That "harem" are women from Peter's life over 2 decades. Some of them he never dated.

That issue was hilarious! Peter was getting a bit of a big head, and getting somewhat full of himself, and he paid the price.
