SPIDER-MAN: Why MYSTERIO Was Right (And Inspired the MCU's Thunderbolts) Marvel Villain Explained

Mysterio was the villain who ultimately brought down Peter Parker, and framed Spider-Man in the eyes of the public. He was able to convince the world that he was a hero as great as Iron man, and the heir apparent to the Avengers. Even though he was a villain, you have to admit--he had a point. The way Mysterio used manipulation and fake news to control people is all too-real. And it's also a big sign post for the creation of the Thunderbolts, or dark Avengers. A team of "heroes" that will likely include Zemo, US Agent, Abomination, Yelena Belova, and more.

I'm really REALLY hoping that the *most* accurate portrayal of an evil Tony Stark ends up being the Green Goblin to Spider-Man. It would make so much sense to end Tom Holland's 6th and final film as Spider-Man with a version of Green Goblin who is almost EXACTLY like Tony Stark just wayyyy darker. It makes sense because Tom Holland's Peter started off fighting alongside Tony as Iron-Man and then his final villain would be a dark reflection of his previous mentor. I agree with you on these villains, they all do reflect Tony's character. But Norman should be the most accurate reflection we get.

Another incredible analysis - this is SO much more than some clickbaity "Thanos/Killmonger/etc Was Right" essay. Mysterio was our introduction to Phase 4, and the strongest additions to Phase 4 all feature some manner of manipulation of public image and/or narratives. I can only hope that No Way Home, and the rest of Phase 4 in general, continues this trend of thematic antagonists.

@@jcaseyjones2829 Yee Goblin was definitely more flat-out insane as they come. I guess it's a question of how Dafoe Osborn is still of that "Good Guy driven to madness by experiment-gone-wrong" style of villain, whereas Beck is "narcissistic psychopath" basically from the start. It takes a bit to push him over the edge, but he certainly was unstable from the get-go, sort of a more dramatic Lou Bloom from Nightcrawler.

This goes back to how I've seen a lot pf people hate on phase 4 because it's not as huge and fantastical as phases 1-3 but I think that's the point. Phase 4 is all about looking at the aftermath of the infinity saga. Four of the Avengers are dead, one Avenger just had a nervous breakdown and enslaved an entire town, the guy who was meant to be the new captain america murdered a man in cold blood, another Avenger is being accused of murder, the world of superheros is falling apart and the world is confused. I love this collective narrative of chaos on a human level, it's more believable, it's relatable, and it will just make the eventual team up that will happen in either phase 5 or 6 against either Kang or Galactus or both that much more special

@@discolullaby5777 This. People still love to conveniently ignore the real reasons why people are upset. I don't hate Phase 4. You may disagree with me on this, but I actually like the IDEAS around Wandavision, F&WS, Loki, and Hawkeye. I've given them all a shot, and there are a lot of things that I like, and some of the characters really do develop well. But it doesn't change the fact that there are clear propaganda moments as well. That speech at the end of F&WS? There was 0 nuance in that. No real critical thinking. No addressing problems from every angle possible. Just the system telling us what to believe. Having a female Loki pretty much take the lead? Again, raw pandering to people who've never even read a comic in their lives. Its not that those of us who are upset aren't "deep enough", as many people would love to believe, its that we don't like propaganda.

13:33 "Turning the public on the Heroes, while supporting the villains." This statement actually holds more merit than most people believe. Mainly because of the fact that in rare instances, it was the heroes influence that drove the villains over the edge. To give them the motivation to expose the heroes for their actions, and prove that the heroes aren't as heroic as the masses view them as. And at the same time, make them seen as the heroic savior. This is the very thing that drives Mysterio to fool the masses into thinking that he's the greatest hero of all; discrediting Spider-Man, and taking the focus off of Tony Stark. The very person who drove Beck into becoming a supervillain.

Marketing himself as a hero was definitely brilliant; they can get away with practically anything in the MCU. The Sokovia Accords may as well not exist, pardons are handed out like tic-tacs, Stark Industries and The Black Panther own monopolies on all of the best tech and only share with their friends, and their celebrity status places them above reproach. I hope that the Thunderbolts addresses the grievances of the 'villains' and treats them like real, complex people, rather than being self-deprecating and apologetic, like the Loki series was. I also hope that the Thunderbolts include Agatha Harkness; She's a 'good guy' in the comics and, in my opinion, did nothing wrong in WandaVision. It was Wanda herself who abducted and psychologically tortured the residents of WestView and, if her grief renders her actions excusable, why not Zemo's? The Avengers built (and lost control of) a genocidal android, killed Zemo's entire family and dissolved his country fighting it, and didn't even stick around to help pull survivors out of the wreckage they'd caused. The Vulture would not have been a criminal at all if Stark hadn't lobbied to force his company out of the disaster relief market so that Stark Industries would have exclusive access to alien tech. Perhaps the next generation of Avengers will adopt Spiderman's motto: "With great power comes great responsibility." and address the downsides of a select group of individuals holding so much power with so little oversight and virtually no consequences.

Great Video, very informative and I felt that it also really related to the real world. We are living in an age of misinformation and distrust.

I think this could lead to more mutants coming out trying to be super heroes and then the government stepping in with Anti Mutant regulation...... then X-MEN!!

The theme of this essay was also part of the plot of 1976's _Network_ - you know the movie where Peter Finch's character shouts on-air "I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not gonna take it any more!"

Just like how Thanos won in infinity war, Mysterio one in far from home and thanks to him Peter has to live with the world knowing his identity, like how the avengers had to live for 5 years with their mistake, and now like the avengers, Peter wants to undo it, but has to face the consequences of the multiverse villains and the deaths I no way home, everything comes back to Mysterio revealing his identity, everything that happens in no way home really is mysterious fault, everything comes from him

When is Marvel going to hire you to help narratively shape the MCU?! Brilliant analysis! You are very good at exploring the superhero genre from multiple thematic standpoints, and those themes are always insightful. Thank you!

the hero worship is one of the main reasons why i wanna see another villain (or villains) who hate the avengers and want revenge like Zemo. The public trusts heroes to save them and when there are casualties, those victims and their families are talked about for a couple days or a week and forgotten. I know there has to be some obsessive people out there who want nothing but revenge

In a very odd way, the anime “My Hero Academia” makes this the entire plot, “What it means to be the greatest hero, amongst a society of heroes?” Outside of that, this video is on point.
