Spider-Woman and Spider-Man have crossed paths before within the stories of Marvel Comics and beyond. However, when it came down to a certain 2014 cover art controversy there were 2 particular covers that were hailed as the same with some outliers. Covers by Milo Manara, J Scott Campbell and Todd McFarlane were all examined. Are these covers ft Peter Parker and Jessica drew indeed the same? Or is something else going on? Find out here on Casually Comics.

I would have to argue that Nightwing is an anomaly and not a trend? Don't get me wrong, I see it, I see the booty and all the times he has been raped and the sexualization, totally get it, but paying devil's advocate here he is like, one dude and marvel has like several? I'm not saying it's ok, but I'm kinda thinking that using Nightwing as an example does not solve the issue.

The thing that bothers me about the Spiderwoman cover is that her shoulders are too low for the pose. Probably because he didn't want her torso blocking the view of her butt. But, if her shoulders were up higher and the angle was shifted to display the butt it would look more natural. The Spiderman cover has a similar problem but he's climbing over a spherical shape. Maybe if one of his legs was a bit farther back it would help.

I love that you always encourage discussion around your videos instead of centring them around one opinion. I think a lot of people who didn't know the background of the artist for Spider-Woman would just perceive the pose as a call back to all the times Spider-Man has done that pose on covers (I know I would have).

Like you said there's clearly a difference of the intent when Pete or Miles happen to be in a "sexy" pose. The artists seem to think, what's a interesting or crazy spider-man pose that looks cool, and just happens to be sexy versus the spider-woman one was sexy pose first, it just happened to fit the character.

First off -- the fan art was awesome (also a big Nightwing fan here). I do feel like Spiderwoman's cover was more sexual somehow. Maybe, like you said, because Spidey was doing something, but some of those "butt covers" for both of them were just awkward. I'm not offended by the Spiderwoman cover, but it isn't one of my favorites. I love the fact that you referenced Matilda regarding how unreasonable people can get when discussing things online. Thanks for keeping your channel fun and providing several points of view. I enjoy all of your videos.

That is NOT why it looked more sexual. Even if spiderman was doing nothing in that same pose, the girl would still look more sexual because she looks a lot more feminine in that pose. Looking sexy is basically the female version of looking bad ass. Idk why people donr understand that. its similar to how a girl with big breasts or butt will always look more inappropriate than a woman with a flat chest and back. I know a girl who has triple D size breasts, large behind and a slim waist, it doesnt matter what the girl wears, if its not a baggy oversized hoodie then Anything she wears will look inappropriate 😂

It's an interesting display of masculine vs feminine power. Active vs passive. This popped out to me as I was watching some old Red Skelton shows from the 60s and they had a few guys doing a bunch of jokes, but then a fit woman would walk on the set just to announce a new skit and she would take ALL the attention. In effect, her power just by her existence on stage eclipsed the host and guest stars' power from their actions and fame. It's an interesting phenomenon.

It's a double standard. It's like how the "WHERE ARE HER ORGANS??" people ignore muscular shirtless Superman/Batman/Aquaman/Wolverine/Thor/etc. If it's a female form men find attractive it's bad, but if it's a woman drawn with a flat chest/butt or large stomach it's "empowering". Honestly, people tend to blow things out of proportion, like how people were upset about The Killing Joke cover for Batgirl. To me, that cover is paying tribute to one of the stories that I feel fits the character of Barbara. Barbara before TKJ was being Batgirl in a drastically different way from why Bruce is Batman. It's Bruce suffering a trauma that shaped him into being Batman. Barbara never had that, and with the events of TKJ, it influenced her in the same way his trauma of losing his parents influenced him, shaped him to become the person he is. By losing her ability to walk, she didn't let it hinder her, and allowed her to become Oracle, a pretty damn good way to put her pain into good use, the same way Bruce took his pain and became Batman. But, that's just my opinion.

I do get the differences between the covers, I just think that the negative reaction to the Spider-Woman cover was over-reaching, and came at a time when comics culture felt particularly under attack from the outside. The cover was within the "margin of error" of an entirely valid "spider person" pose and camera angle, and yet was treated by many as some sort of abomination. "No, that's not for me" is an entirely appropriate response, "burn the witch!" was not, and that's what got hackles up in defense of it.

From the little I remember, wasn't that part of something bigger? I remember people sharing redrawn poses to showcase both how ridiculous it would have been to draw males in those poses as well as redrawings of more realistic poses for the females depicted in what they perceived as unrealistic. Comic artists are notoriously lazy, no one ever gets folds, wrinkles, or stretches in their spandex because that's extra time and time is money. They draw naked people with no genitals and cover them in body paint. Even the way Spidey's mask works is often completely unnatural, the way it clings perfectly to his eyes and nose but is just taut enough for the artist not to have to draw lips, ears, OR wrinkles in the fabric. This is the real reason Mary Jane rarely wears anything but lingerie and bikinis. The artist CBA to draw clothes.

I think we subconsciously turn a blind eye to the female gaze. As if we couldn't point out what it's for fear of "slut shaming" a woman in general, but historically it's more like "tainting the image of a good woman", and by good we mean with more social capital than most men, which is most women, by the way. The spidey comics are sexualized, a lot, just like spider woman, they have to be, like most heroes people either want to be them or be with them and people favor the sexy a lot. Sex sells, and women buy a lot more, it's fair to assume they are being selling sex way more. And when it comes to what they buy, well, it's obvious to assume that.
@FriedSynapse

I think we turn a blind eye to the female gaze because men still want it. Men crave being desired by a woman, so we encourage them to sexualize us. If they stop, men worry that no woman will ever want them. Women don't want it because most woman can be viewed as sexy, so they get it all the time and are sick of it.

Think about the traits being emphasized. Men are strong. Muscular. Capable. Their muscles and veins are popping. Women have narrow waists, wide hips, big butts, large breasts, often (not always) low muscle tone, but certainly lower than males. Their outfits are often (not always--I am well aware that a very large proportion of male heroes wear skin-tight outfits too) less militarized, less utilitarian, and more designed to show off their form. They are often used differently, as well. Yes, both sides are portrayed as idealized versions of their respective genders, but the ideal version is not an objective thing, it's a social construct that had sexism built into it.

If Elle magazine wants to make an absolutist statement they should be open to accept a factual counter argument.

Even though I agree, and like previously mentioned the male poses are not fully sexualized, when they were depicted like some cases where they were intentionally posed sexualized they differ a lot from the attractive action poses, but yeah, I don't think that poses should be taken too highly and up most not on a variant cover where I personally think looks bad!from the shading to a unappealing spine to a face where It looks weird

As a cover I thought the art was cool. Spider Woman was drawn in a very sexy way. I thought it was no big deal. But after all this hype I love the cover. I want the book very much.

Lets face it, the negative reaction to the cover was based on a puritanical reaction by a group of people who were more concerned with being seen in as outraged. Both male and female characters in superhero comics have always been portrayed as physical ideals. Is the Spider-Woman cover attempting to portray the character in sexy way? Of course it is, Milo Manara's entire career is based on drawing women beautifully and sexually charged. Comics have long since discarded any attempt at appealing to a juvenile audience, so I don't see the problem here. The cover portrays her as sexually attractive, whether that reduces her to a simple object is entirely in the eye of the viewer. Perception is key here. Manara's work is usually tinged with humor based around a female main character with male characters being little more than set dressing. Taking that in to account does it seem likely he's the kind of creator that views women as mere objects? Probably not. To summarize things in a simple manner: The whole thing was a nothing-burger pushed forward by people who wanted attention regardless of the consequences to others.

One thing i feel is overlooked is that part of the imagery that both artist are evoking is that of a low crawling, stealthy, and menacing spider. Yes they can both be intentionally and coincidentally reflective of a seductiveness. "The fire nation attacked" thanks for that.

Secret Empire. Everyone was going crazy and i thought and still think that it’s silly. Did people actually think Cap was gonna be a nazi forever? Plus, I thought Spencer’s run on Cap was really fun and the beginning of Secret Empire really had me on the edge of my seat. The tension builds so perfectly. Ending in Cap revealing he’s behind everything. Really wish people just let the story play out. You know the ending was changed because of all the backlash. Great episode, great channel.

Hi! Im new to your channel but I've really enjoyed your content! Speaking from my experience in editorial illustration, my bachelors in illustration and as someone pursuing an MFA that focuses on propaganda and subtle imagery in art, I believe the two covers are different and have different intent. The spider-man cover is compositionally designed to reflect more action, and less toward his behind. It is small and takes little space, about the size of his head in the foreground. The viewers eye is led down the figure into the action at the bottom, and there is more detail focused mark making toward the bottom of the cover to draw the focus. In contrast, the spider woman cover uses form, tangents, positive and negative space to lead the eye of the viewer to the behind. It is a point of focus, I'd argue more than her face, which is closer toward the viewer in the foreground, but has less detail than Jessica's lower back, further away from the viewer, that uses stronger contrast in color and tone to capture the viewers eye, leading them upward toward it. This is a larger convo than just the compositions, and there is a larger convo on women's bodies and their depiction in comics and media to be had, but I'm 100% sure I'd be mansplaining to get into that here. Keep up the good work! I'm looking forward to more of your content!!
