Oh my goodness...this brings back so many memories...lol the Aussies always have to take it to another level...their competitiveness is seen in music fields and also in the sporting fields. lol "No worries mate!" is our catch phrase lol. I still think this is the best version I've seen of Black Betty...Spiderbait were big back then ...not heard too much over the past few years though. but I think this went to #1 on the charts here. Love your reaction as per usual....Waiving from Australia

Got handed a compilation album of these dudes bout 15 yrs ago n was blown away. Eddy Current Suppression Ring also blew me away at about the same time. Am sure they are Australian too. The locked in bassline of "i admit my faults" is priceless but i digress. Anyway, love from Scotland

Kram (Kram is just Mark backwards as his stage name) the drummer is the main singer, the bassist Janet sings on some songs like "Calypso." "Buy Me a Pony" was a huge hit for them here and topped the annual national youth radio poll "Triple J's Hottest 100".

First time I heard this version was around 2005, I was rollin up through the Navajo reservation in Arizona. I picked up this Native am radio station outta Tuba City, Az. The reason it sticks in my head was because I was listening Native Pow Wow one minute, the next it was Hank Sr., then Spiderbait's version of Black Betty. I've loved it ever since.

Spiderbait can be heavy or the sugariest pop! Always fantastic! The drummer Kram does most singing but bassist Janet also sings.

I have to be honest this is my favourite version of Black Betty, simply because the way it integrates the guitar solo into the song is much smoother than the Ram Jam version. As for its meaning, Ive seen multiple meanings too, some of them seem to stretch the metaphors too much really, but I guess, as you said, its whichever one you like the most.

Yes mate the Spiderbait version of this I feel is even better than the original. But then being an Aussie I am being pro Aussie bands. The drummer is the main singer and his name is Cram which is Marc backwards and they are awesome live never fail to have fun at one of their gigs and love the chase.

The original song is about an interracial relationship in Birmingham Alabama. The musket would be a Brown Bess not a Black Betty. The Brown Bess was the standard British Military firearm (not rifle, being a musket) during the American War of Independence. The band is Australian, making the banjo even more freaky. That is their drummer singing, although one of their guitarists (female) is an alternate lead singer. Looks like it's filmed at Broadwater, NSW. Car is fricken awesome. Their other lead singer sings a song called f*cken awesome. (Spelt that way deliberately) if you wanna see the band perform with her on lead vocals. Outside of this song my next favourite of theirs is called "Buy me a pony" and it would have to be the most nihilistic two and a bit minutes of music you will ever hear in your life. Highly recommended, with appropriate levels of emotional therapy afterwards.

You mentioned drumming and singing.. The drummer in this band, I saw live at a regional concert. He was bought up by another Aussie artist "G flip" they both played drums and sing as lead. Also in rock band "The Warning", while not lead vocal, the drummer Pau, sings back ups while drumming and has a pretty decent cover of Radioheads's Creep with just her playing a piano and singing. While more "pop", G Flip did a cover of Christina Aguilera on "Like a version" which shows her live skills. 💜🇦🇺

Actually it was James "Iron Head" Baker who composed the song. Earliest known recording is 1934. To this day no one knows for sure who or what Black Betty is?

That was an interesting cover. But I prefer the version by Ram Jam. It was there only big hit in 1977. But it is one of the most fun & energetic songs. "Black Betty" is a 20th-century African-American work song often credited to Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter as the author, though the earliest recordings are not by him.

Huddie (?), Leadbeater wrote this . He did serious old blues and also some of the first crooning. "Goodnight Irene" is, I believe, also one of his.

As a bearded gent you should give The Beards a try. Great musicians but more of a novelty act with all their songs being about beards.. I know you prefer live music and there's a live version of I Like Beards (Live 2015). Their official videos of If Your Dad Doesn't Have a Beard, You've Got Two Mums and All The Bearded Ladies are also good.

Random comment here, but I remember seeing a video of them performing at the Big day out in Australia years ago. The drummer ran off into the crowd mid song, then went to climb back onto the stage. One of the security guys didn't recognize him and tried to pull him down and punched him in the head. The singer was like wtf? It was pretty funny lol

You were mostly correct about the origins of the song although led belly didn't write it as you said it was originally black convicts that sang it before he did led belly just made the first proper album recoding of it but there is a prior recording actually sang by the convicts themselves you can actually find both led belly's version and the convict recording here on KZbin if you're interested, and yeah the song has many different meanings the gun thing though is actually not true and is an internet rumour caused by the songs evolving meanings ram jam were singing about a woman spiderbait are as you said singing about the car the rabbit hole that is this song is pretty interesting

Love this song, Spiderbait are known for covers but they really hit this for 6. Just the drummer sings here but the female singer has a sweet voice and adds contrast to most of their work. And yes I'm smiling too that heavy bluegrass and the beast of a car. Also one the band has a Pixies T-shirt, another great band.

It has a thing for many years in Australian rock to put one song on your album as a cover to show your influences. Litigation over rights kind of destroyed this after greedy has been bands expected all the band's revenue from that album and more. But it was a common thing in the 60's for bands to show their musical influences with a cover version globally. Bands like Cream and Led Zeppelin getting sued for big dollars over it destroyed what had been a homage and a little bit of $$$ kickback to their favourite bands and it then understandably fell out of fashion. Funnily enough Led Zeppelin dealt with it well, having the most covered rock and roll song of all time. never heard of them suing about Stairway to Heaven covers. Within Australia the most covered song might well be "Shivers". Well worth a listen.
