It has many flaws, inside and out of the movie. Within the movie, the bar scene featured the franchise's worst villain monologue with the most heavy handed exposition, the main character's naivety constantly jeopardizes the safety of people around him (whining, irresponsibility, inferior complex, jealousy). Whilst Peter does learn his lesson, the pay off is unsatisfactory, the villain falls to the ground from a dramatic glass removal and not by knock out, his peace is immediately undercut by the villain's trap card and Peter loses his entire private life. Outside of the movie, the promotion of this film was right after the peak of Endgame and amidst speculations of exploring the fictional worlds of the multiverse where variations of fan-favourite characters exist. This movie featured a storyline that could've spearheaded the march into this concept, but the rug got pulled from under everyone who expected a multiverse story from the first half, then the villain was revealed to be an illusionist, exactly like his comicbook counterpart. The point is not that the villain is a loyal adaptation, nor is this a "I should've seen this coming" hindsight 20/20 moment, the problem is timing. To put this timeline into perspective, imagine if you've managed to snag a table at the best restaurant in the city, and after a wonderful meal, you get ready for their renowned dessert to end the night on a perfect note, only for them to tell you they've run out and they can only serve you an inferior version bought from the nearest bakery. You eat it, slightly disappointed and you leave with the thought of enjoying the real deal lingering on your mind. That is where the conflict lies, releasing a movie with a fake multiverse premise at the height of a multiverse hype caused the franchise to lose tremendous momentum, closing out phase 3 on a whimper. It is a good popcorn movie on its own, but poor timing + mediocre villainy + weak story arc are its downfall. If you want a glimpse into what this movie could've done, kickstarting the multiverse saga, look no further than the popularity generated by Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse.
