Jerek - Hey John and crew! So I saw over the weekend that David Zaslav had lunch with Steven Spielberg, Christopher Nolan, and Peter Safran, possibly discussing Man of Steel 2. Wow! If this is true, what would a Superman film from Spielberg and Nolan be like? I'm really hoping this is true, Spielberg and Nolan are two of my absolute favorites in the industry. Did you see this story going around? What are you thoughts on this? Thanks!

If Steven Spielberg was ever to direct a superhero movie I don’t think there’s any character more fitting for him to do it with than Superman, yeah Fantastic Four would’ve been cool but Superman feels like he was made for Spielberg, especially with this talk of them now taking the character in more of fun, lighthearted direction I think Steven Spielberg is absolutely perfect for that, I mean can you imagine a Superman movie with the same sense of awe and wonder as Jurassic Park? That’d be incredible, it’d be like seeing a Richard Donner Superman movie in the modern age, and yeah, it’s cool that he’s been able to go off and make these smaller, indie movies/passion projects like West Side Story and whatnot but after all this time it’d be awesome to see Steven Spielberg return to making a big blockbuster movie, he, more than any other big name director out there is a director who I would erupt with joy upon hearing him say he’s throwing his hat into the comic book movie ring, this might just be wishful thinking because it seems like a really tall order but I would absolutely love it

Spielberg's go to composer for decades has been John WIlliams. I know Williams recently retired, but it would be great if Williams returned to score yet another Superman film with Spielberg at the helm. A wonderful swan song for both legends.

The core premise of MoS came from Chris Nolan, but he said he wouldn't be the guy to direct it and that's why he pitched it to Zack. I Hope it's Zaslav asking Chris to pitch the concept of MoS to Spielberg to continue and keep that core premise when he directs MoS 2. Safran is there for the assessment of the production.

Everyone forgot about Man of Steel genesis? While making Dark Knight Rises, Goyer pitched to Nolan his Superman idea. Nolan went on to develop the story (he was credited for the story) and it's structure. You can see Nolan fingerprints all over it. It's non linear story etc. All the differences between MoS and BvS/JL is because of Nolan's involvement and lack thereof.

People always think Man of Steel is Snyder's baby, but that was one of the few times where he was actually just a director for hire instead of building his own project from the ground up. MOS has none of Snyder's signature directing style outside of the camerawork and cinematography. Man of Steel has no slow-motion sequences, and no music video montages. Snyder didn't even write MOS, Nolan and Goyer did. They just brough Snyder on to direct their vision and I think he did a great job with it. The Faora fight scenes were amazing, loved the way he captured her crazy speed against regular people. The lackluster script was all Nolan and Goyer.

My guess is Blackhawk, not Superman. Blackhawk is a past DC Comics superstar 1940-60s, number 2 in sales, after Superman. Like John said, they definitely discussed Superman. Christopher Nolan was a producer on Man of Steel.

I think if they discussed Superman or DC movies it would be likely about setting a settled tone- Spielberg's relationship with Donner (he executive produced Goonies) and Nolan as a producer of the first Man of Steel probably WB is trying to see the direction they want it to go in.

OK, so many thoughts on this. First off, Spielberg and Nolan are both in my top three favorite filmmakers of all time, so I would love to have been in that meeting just to get to talk to them and pick their brains a little bit. Second of all, Christopher Nolan not only produced but also worked on the story for Man of Steel. I don't think it's that far fetched to believe they were talking about Superman because he was directly involved in the production of the first film. It makes sense that they would at least consult him on where it would make sense to take this iteration of the character in a followup film. Doesn't mean he'll be directly involved the second time around, but it might mean that. Third, and this is just wild, fanboy speculation that has no basis in reality whatsoever. We know John Williams is retiring after Indiana Jones 5. HOWEVER, if there is one thing that could convince him to put that retirement on hold to do just one more movie, it's his buddy Steven Spielberg directing a Superman movie. Furthermore, WHAT IF they somehow convinced Williams and Hans Zimmer to work together on the score. Again, pure speculation here, but you make Man of Steel 2 (or call it Superman or Man of Tomorrow, whatever) starring Henry Cavill, directed by Steven Spielberg, produced and with a story by Christopher Nolan, and with a score by John Williams and Hans Zimmer, that's a movie that would make a killing at the box office. So, in conclusion, did they discuss Superman? I'll take the over that they did. They'd be stupid not to at least consider that option.

If Spielberg turns this down there are others who I can think of. Since Mr. Cavill wants a more joyful approach to the character maybe another legend like Ron Howard could do it. Brad Bird, Christopher MacQuarrie, Joseph Kosinski, or Matthew Vaughn. Superman needs the Winter Soldier treatment. Joe Johnston directed the first Captain America movies but the Russo Brothers directed the ones that changed peoples’ perception of the character for the better. Superman needs to move beyond Mr. Snyder’s vision the same way Cap moved beyond Joe Johnston’s.

If we assume it is in fact over Man of Steel 2 (and not Spielberg's long efforts to do a Blackhawk Squadron movie based on the DC comics) - I am 100% behind that choice, because at that point, if were getting the guy that did the early Indy films, even Hook - then yeah I think we get the right balance and depth that Cavil clearly blows away all the other Supermen. However - Nolan is a hard pass and 'please keep him 10 miles away from the production and block all his calls automatically'. I think the Nolan films are good - not as good as many others make them out as but still on the upper end of the scale. And what he did works for Batman, his usual tone, works for Batman. And while I know that some, like John, love Man of Steel - I don't, and it can't be denied that it was a divisive film, and Nolan did the story for it. If you want to bring Nolan on for more Batman maybe, but I'd honestly rather see him tackle someone like 'The Question' or even 'Black Canary' - especially because he could likely show the restraint to have her be an excellent hand to hand fighter and excellent at investigating and covert stuff without her having to use her canary cry every 10 minutes, maybe only a couple times when it's absolutely necessary.

If you hate Man of Steel, then you shouldn't be excited for Nolan, as that was his movie. If you love Man of Steel, then this is potentially good news, as Nolan might actually care about continuity with the first film. As for Spielberg, I think a Spielberg Superman reboot would be amazing -- but I don't trust him with Man of Steel 2 because I don't believe that he cares one bit about continuity with the previous films whatsoever, because he's never done shared universes. An ideal Man of Steel 2 would embrace the hopeful optimistic side of Superman while not recasting anyone from the previous films or contradicting anything that happened. But I would also be fine with rebooting the entire Justice League starting with a new Superman movie in The Batman universe.

The only storyline DC has that would be worthy of Nolan and Spielberg together (and to justify their salaries) would be a Kingdom Come movie or trilogy, but there is no way they would do that. A properly done Kingdom Come movie would leave DC nowhere to go creatively after that. Its probably just chatting about other business opportunities....probably.

Spielberg and Nolan are two of the greatest filmmakers of all time however I think neither of them would be right for directing Superman. While I have loved many of Spielberg’s classics most of his modern films have been hit or miss and they have felt outdated. I know MOS 2 will be different in tone as Henry talked about it being more joyful. But I hope it still feels like a modern Superman film. My concern with him making a Superman movie is that it will outdated. With Nolan I think his sensibilities are too grounded for Superman I just don’t see it. If they bring him as a hands on producer that would make sense because he was hands on for Man of Steel 2

@@buntyskb Well to me the tone of all three movies made sense. Because Man of Steel put Clark in the modern world and the 21st century is very cyclical. A lot of people complained that they made Superman dark and to me that’s not what Snyder did. He made the world and the situations Clark faced in that movie dark, while retaining the essence of his morality and good heart. And BvS is was a movie that to me organically built off the themes presented in MOS. One of the key things in MOS was that Pa Kent tells Clark that his existence will change the world. It will be a paradigm shift and not everyone will accept him and his good deeds. BvS is a movie about humanity’s reaction to Superman through the point of view of one human who happened to be Bruce Wayne. The dark tone made sense cause it was a deeper exploration of the cynicism of our world. Then Superman’s sacrifice changes things again and we see both Bruce and Diana inspired by it. ZSJL was light hearted at times and the humour was organic. Snyder was able to maintain his sensibilities while shifting the tone to a more hopeful direction. All of this being said I’m not saying that I want to see MOS 2 have the same tone as MOS 1 or the other two movies. WB went in a different direction since Aquaman in 2018. Looking at movies like Shazam 1&2 and even brief glimpses of Flash I know they have moved on from Snyder’s style and the Snyderverse entirely. What I’m saying is that I don’t want to watch MOS 2 and see them doing all the conventional things you would expect to see in a Superman movie. Cause Man of Steel did things you wouldn’t expect to see in a Superman movie. And tone had nothing to do with that. A lighthearted and joyful movie can be unconventional as much as dark movie can. To me it’s not about tone but it’s about keeping this character fresh rather than making a nostalgic movie.

If Spielberg does direct it, i hope the use the Hans Zimmer theme (All due respect to John Williams and his iconic Superman theme) The man of Steel theme is just so epic. It's one of the best and the most underrated superhero themes of the last 30 years, imo second only to the Batman theme also by Zimmer. There's something about that music that just FEEEELS like the superman theme.

I think the dream would be if they can get both Nolan and Spielberg to write and direct a couple of films about superman and batman which if they revive the Nolan universe it would be AWESOME

Well, Steven Spielberg was in the running to direct a Superman film back in the day before Richard Donner got the gig. Also, Christopher Nolan did produce Man of Steel. I can't see both of these filmmakers working together because with big directors come big egos; I can't see Spielberg taking orders from Nolan as a producer and vice versa. I don't know if Spielberg would be interested in making a Superman movie, but if he is, he would be the perfect choice because I believe to make a good and proper Superman movie, you need Spielbergian elements. Also, if Zaslav and Safran can coax Nolan back to produce a Man of Steel 2, I pray to God that they hire a better filmmaker than Zack Snyder to direct it.

The reason Man of Steel is so good is because it was a Chris Nolan story. I imagine that he has a sense of ownership for Cavill's Superman and would like to imagine BvS didn't happen and will break the story to define the way we perceive Superman's rogues gallery like the Dark Knight shined the light on Batman thru the Joker. Whether the adversary is Lex Luthor and/or Brainiac. Pushing Clark Kent to his limits.

The last two "big" movies Spielberg did was Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Ready Player One. Not exactly movies people would list in his top 10. He also bowed out of the latest Indy movie, so not sure he is looking to do another 100 million dollar film.

Realistically I can’t see Spielberg walking into a superman sequel and not being able to cast his own superman or design his own world. Nolan isn’t the right fit for superman because with his love of grounding everything he wouldn’t be able to make superman work. I think this is just about getting these 2 interested in working with WB in general

Nolan wrote and produced Man of Steel. Have you seen Interstellar, Inception and Tenet? How are those grounded?

@@buntyskb those are very grounded look at inception he sets up that people can literally bend landscapes and yet doesn’t do anything with it but instead gives us run of the mill action that you could see in almost any spy movie. Interstellar again run of the mill science fiction concepts these are all very standard things because he doesn’t want to truly embrace anything that would become a big science fiction or comic book action set piece. Yes he has a story credit on man of steel along with Goyer who has the story and screenplay credit and we know that Snyder had a big influence on the shooting screenplay once he was hired. I don’t think Nolan was that involved with that movies other than getting some extra cash at the end of the day once Snyder was hired. We know the only reason he did Batman was because his Howard Hughes movies at WB fell apart

Chris Nolan is the executive producer for man of steel, so like they need to talk to Michael uslan for Batman projects.. any man of steel sequel would require talking with Nolan, even over Snyder
