Spigelia is underutilized in the landscape due to limited availability, but it's poised to make an explosion in popularity. Why? I bought 3 of these plants (red head variety) when I saw them in the spring at my local nursery. I have a woodland garden & planted them in part shade & I have to say they are spectacular! A great find! I hope they bring in more- I would plant at least another dozen (or more)!

I just realized Andrew said it’s a zone 5b, & I’m in 5a. So I think I’ll wait till next year before I buy more, just to be sure it survives the winter. I’m hopeful though. I’m going to pile a lot of wood mulch on it in late fall.

@@MariMari-vq8hl Yes. I just put a couple inches of wood chip mulch on in the winter (which I do with that whole bed anyway). It's come back bushier and extremely beautiful.

Not too much, tbh. Maybe an inch or two each year. But I've only had them a couple of years now. Maybe they'll spread more (as I'd like them to) once more established.@@nashvlbees

Mine was in bloom for 3 weeks. TBH, it’s even more beautiful than in this video. The deep red color with the yellow throat is unusual & really pops out at you. I don’t think it’s a repeat bloomer, but I’m liking the deep green healthy looking foliage.
