A couple of things. Spike was supposed to be single episode, but the boy acting the 'Chosen One' was visibly growing up, so had to be dropped. Getting Spike to dust him got around Buffy having to slay a child and introduces a more exciting Big Bad. Probably the most important plot revision ever in the franchise.

SPOILERS Actually he had a whole arc through the moment where he died in the church due to the the organ falling on him. Drusilla was going to take his place as the threat until Angelus showed up and he and Drusilla became a power couple and over-arching threat to Buffy. That changed because the actor had such great on-screen chemistry with everyone. The reason he killed The Anointed One is true, but Spike was never a one episode villain. This is from interviews and DVD Special Features when the show was running. Over the years the story got twisted during repeats to others, I guess.

One of the most iconic scenes in the whole show when Spike ( one of the greatest characters in The Buffyverse ) rolls into town and drives right over the Sunnydale sign, well you wont be disappointed with the entertainment value of this character. School Hard is one of the best episodes of S2. James Marsters was so impressive in the role, he became an instant fan favourite. Some great writing in this episode, when Xander goes to get Buffy's bag and pulls out a yoyo, tampon and then stake, this shows Buffy from child, to teenager, to adolescent showing how she is growing up. Great too when Joyce clobbers Spike on the head with the axe. All in all a great episode for early S2 with Angel/Spike/Drusilla who have a shared history through the centuries to add to the arc of the Buffyverse as a whole.

Fun and entertaining reaction. We knew when we were watching that BTVS was changing and it was a blast. Until now , Vampires had been one dimensional evil creatures. Spike and Drusilla were unlike any Vampires before. Almost every girl in my group watching thought Spike was a hunk and Drusilla was sexy. Now we had two handsome Vampires and a beautiful crazy female demon Vampire. Add that they were intriguing and funny… BTVS grew even more into must see TV. Finally the last line with Spike walking off with Dru and asking what’s on television tonight? Never had we heard a Vampire wonder about what they would be watching. Sunnydale changed that Monday night and so did we.

Yep, James Marsters was indeed on Torchwood for an episode, maybe 2, I forget. He really kicks it up a notch as Spike, compared to normal vampires.

Does Spike remind you of a different character? One from the Vampire Diaries? Starts with a D, ends with an N? Yeah, Damon was based on Spike. Actually, he IS Spike only with dark hair and not British. Spike came first, though. Spike's better.
