for newer players i think it’s important to explain how to jump diagonally at the ball and not just vertically. this was a massive problem for me when i first started and it made me constantly look very awkward, hit net, and just get blocked.

hmm, sounds intersting, do you mean jumping sideways as in your going towards the net through the air once you jump?

Thank you coach. This really broadened my perspective of what is the spike actually about, especially the part about what we’re lookin at and tools of how to use that information. I’m still struggling with the 4-steps due to playing open gym only with inconsistent sets but thanks to you I discovered I have a lot of other things to learn. I appreciate your work a lot. I personally like to use side steps after an attack as it is also resting time, not only for the legs, but more importantly for the brain being swushed around in your skull. Turning all the time gives me just a slight hint of vertigo which weakens my approach significantly!

1. Approach: Consider a 4-step approach instead of 3-step approach, as it could give you more options to sync up with your setter, based on what step you are on when you are touching the ball. If you are on your first step when they touch the ball, then this is timing a high set. Second step, running a medium set. Third step, then a quick set. 2. Transition: Explore if using a backwards shuffle/back-pedal works best for you when transitioning from a block, to preparing to spike. Back-pedaling can be unnatural depending on where you are trying to look. Instead of back-pedaling, try opening up/turning towards your side of the court and running back to your spiking prep position (without moving backwards). This allows you to open up to your team's side of the court so you can easily see what is happening. 3. Explosiveness: You may be explosive on your hit, but are you being explosive on your approach? You need to be moving quick and explosively on your approach so that you can use more of that forward momentum to hit the ball even harder than with a slow/calm approach. (Do be careful about where you land though...) 4. Vision: What are you looking at when you are in position to hit? If you are primarily watching the ball, stop (assuming that the pass is good and the setter is able to get the second touch). Look at opposing middle blocker to see if they are in position block both pins? Are they watching you? If they are able to block you, are they going to be late, so you can try to get in between the block before the complete it? 5. Toolbox: You need multiple tools to be effective as a spiker. You have cross, line, tip, roll, tool off the block, many options. Do not just hit the ball as hard as you can without thinking, think about the best way to hit rather than just hitting the ball as you can and getting blocked. If something doesn't work, try something else, be creative, be flexible. 6. FAAAX: It's okay to fail, to be uncomfortable. Don't stagnate or let yourself become mediocre, don't be afraid to try new things, and once again, be flexible!

Yes, a more explosive approach can make a hit harder, but I find that slowing it down a little bit and messing with the timing can really fake out blockers and give me a better analysis of the blockers and defenders. Power isnt the only important part of the hit, assessing the court and ball placement is just as important.

Thank you Coach Artie, as someone who’s been struggling to even know how to approach once I know the ball was up for me, this cleared some problems I could do, now the next step is to actually implement it in practice to perfect it 😂 if as a fan, I was wondering, along with this video, do you have a video of “how to hit harder?” Or to generate more force against the ball, I’m confused and arguing with myself with the arm swing I should do, how should I do it, where should I contact the ball, how should I contact the ball, etc etc but even searching it up doesn’t make enough sense to me and you’re the best at explaining things so I hope if you know how to clear that up in a video or a previous video you’ve already done, I would love to check it out to see. As someone who played club level before and watched higher level analytically, that "don't watch ball" is either confusing or wrong. if you have perfect receive and perfect set yeah probably you may skip the ball but you need at least 50% of that time to look at the ball and in between checking everything in opponent team. like when I'm playing I'm actually seeing the ball but I took glances to everyone in opponent team. not just middle blocker but everyone but I don't need 100% of time to know that. especially you need last glance when jumping because lots of things could have changed but watching before that could help to know the opponent movement. also into blocking you need to watch ball more than the player if you don't opponent abuse your lack of watching ball in perfect way. in pos 4 I'll just jump in a way that ball would be on my right side and if you jump exactly front of me I'm gonna get perfect hit on right. you need to jump a little to my right if I jumped that way and they waving the hand with ball passing from that area. it's jut one combination but not watching the ball is huge common mistake actually as opponent limited with that anyway. as setter yeah I won't watch the ball that much after first receive comparing to other positions. still even for top tier player it's more than 50% on ball but they really look away from ball especially the setters
@siavashabdoli3 ай бұрын
and just another tip on 4 step. honestly no one ever told me about 3 :))) it was always at least 4. 3 doesn't make sense you can't sync yourself but one layer above that would be pre step to outside of the box. so if you are at 4 just take a step left immediately after the receive. you need to go outside the box(literally) you have way more options. you may end up jumping anywhere even you can totally get back 2 meter into your court again but opposite of that would be hard and probably you gonna end up with net fault. Sorry my first language is not english not sure if I used the right terms in english.

I'm 5'7'' so you know. If you believe your vertical is already very good, I would watch some arm swing technique videos. There is a lot that can be adjusted there to improve your spiking ability. Also, being physically trained can help too. It took me years to improve my spiking technique as I'm self-taugh and I still see plenty to improve. A little bit of self reflection, watching videos and trying what you learn during league games or practices go a long way. Don't be shy to fail while trying new stuff because it's part of the process to learn and improve. Good luck on your path to improvement. 💪

Great video! I have a question for you related to spiking. I'm an agressive player and, of course, sometimes I'm in the backlane cause of rotation. Then I'm never sure when I can spike in the attack zone. I know that when I jump above the zone I can hit the ball, but when I'm in the attack zone can i just jump in place and attack the ball or do I have to come from behind the attack zone?
@KerbecsGaming11 ай бұрын
When in the backcourt you can't jump in the frontcourt to attack. You can still hit the ball but you can't jump and spike. Behind the attack line however you can jump and hit however you like.
@coachartie11 ай бұрын
If you start in the back court as long as you jump from the back court you can hit. It's about your starting rotation on court. That's what dictates where you can hit. It's also where you jump. If you're back court and jump from back court all good. You might see some pros jump from back court and spike pretty much on the net cause they crazy. Totally legal at this time.in the game.

When you’re transitioning from the block into your approach, I was taught to never have your back turned to the court, is that still true?

never have your back to your side of the court, it’s important to note when you transition you open up to the court so you can see the ball. never let the ball leave your sight
