Spike Milligan was not Irish, the Indian born son of A British army captain who was thoroughly British otherwise he'd never have served in India putting down India's independence, and before you try to mention it, Wellington was also born in Ireland, but that never made him Irish, which he denied in any event. Fond memories of the days of when people could laugh at each other's national idiosyncracies and realise it was just hugely exaggerated for fun. Nowadays the police would be knocking on his door without any hesitation on a single complaint from the humourless alternative comedy world.

Is there a difference between something being racial and racist? I think that comedians have been arguing for special privilege with respect to their craft for entertainment purposes in appropriate meduims. Its different taking activity of boxing match onto the street it's assult.
@michaeld5888 Жыл бұрын
@@deviusfeilds You put it in a nutshell in that just about everything we can do including humour is a privilege to be granted from on high by people unknown nowadays. Often people only find out the rules after they have broken them but in cancel culture there will be no going back. This was a nation that could laugh at each other's cultural quirks and now this has gone with the new threatening and aggressive respect culture that has been imposed from outside. Plus you are just coming back with the usual -ist and -phobic labels without any arguments on the subtleties of Milligan's humour as always happens in this sort of discussion. We seem to be trying to reason with people only capable of quickly attaching an -ist or -phobic label before going back undercover.

@michaeld5888 Жыл бұрын
@@ChrisLawton66 The problem is with every person now able to complain and eliminate what they do not feel is good comedy there will be none left. Plus I do not feel Milligan was mocking people. This is more a case of how you react to it than the intention. Milligan was never mocking the Irish but found the the quirks for the personalities of the different races and cultures endearing rather than meaning any insult. In many ways it was Vive La Difference as against now when everything has to be forced in to anodyne uniformity and offence taken outside a narrow band of cultural delimiters.

Just in case anyone plays the "racism" card: Spike Milligan was half Irish and held Irish citizenship for most of his life. He was in fact denied British citizenship because he was born in India, despite his years of military service.
@paulaherne39153 жыл бұрын
There's a responsibility on citizenship not to bring insults on the nationhood of the country one applies to be a citizen of. So what you seem to be implying is that he took on Irish Citizenship because he was left stateless by the very state that for centuries poured scorn on the Irish nation? This implies a real opportunist, or a "chancer" as we'd call him in Ireland.
