He is very correct on the affect that scene had on fans. I feel horrible that he had to go through that. I know what they say they were trying to do (I don't know how they can say that when Angel literally exists), but it was unnecessary. It's a low spot on a show that was my fav as a teen. I loved (and still do) Buffy. I was 13 when it started, so I was likely the prime audience for it's growth. I loved Spikes character and I know he was a villain, but likely I said, this feel unnecessary, excessive, even.

Honestly, I hated that episode too. I know it was a catalyst for Spike to get his soul back but it felt forced (as in, more for plot convince rather than actual character reasoning). It felt out-of-character. And it contradicted too much of the personality as we saw it in season 5 and 6 up until that point.

I was more interested to hear the parts of Buffy he'd changed his mind on being acceptable. To me, good morals are based upon the logical interpretation of one's integrity - this isn't something that changes like fashion and neither something that is necessarily improved-upon as time goes on. When James was talking about things that future generations would be horrified to hear us doing now, it immediately brought the society in Demolition Man to mind - a society in which it's illegal to consume foods which are 'bad for you' and swear! I'm just as horrified by a future as unfree as that as someone from the future may be horrified by the present for people exercising those liberties. They have their reasons for being horrified as do I have mine - just because they're in the future it doesn't make their opinion more valid than mine. I love going back to Buffy, especially the early ones, and hearing the style they speak to each other in. Some of it is very 90s - I view that as a positive; it's like going back to a 90s movie with a Techno/Trance soundtrack (e.g. Mortal Kombat) vs some generic orchestral score (e.g. The Matrix) - love it or hate it, the former is more memorable than the latter and thus more lovable or hatable.

The Buffy almost rape scene is not a mistake in my opinion. First, because Buffy succeeds in pushing Spike off. Then, it's at this moment Spike realizes he's got no soul and can't be "allowed" to love a human while still being a monster. That's when he begins to realize he needs his soul back, which ultimately makes him sacrifice himself for the one he loves. Really important scene for both of the characters (mostly Spike though). Though I can understand the scene can make some people uncomfortable, it's still good on a storytelling and character development point of view.

I just watched Buffy as an adult. I must say I absolutely understand why the audience wanted Spike to come back over and over again. It is because James played him in such a charismatic and charming manner. He might be evil, but you can't look away. It's the same phenomenon as when the film Snape got so much love while the book Snape is such a hated character barely getting a pass for redemption.

While I understand James' personal feelings towards the scene, his thought process is a bit skewed. Everyone who watched Buffy didn't envision themselves as Buffy. I'm a guy & I never did that, & my sister only ever envisioned herself as Buffy w/ her slayer powers. Buffy was a vampire show, so there's obviously a suspension of disbelieve among the target audience. It should be no more jarring than any other victim of vampires. I just find it odd that there's no real discussions about the countless males who were victimized by supernatural creatures (be they male or female), when the whole argument is about "preying on the weak". Zander was the only "normal human" among the original HS Scoobies & no one's talking about the multiple times he was victimized (because there seems to only be an issue when it comes to women). Not to mention, the scene was based off of a female writer's personal experience where she was the aggressor & her ex had to physically push her off. So the power dynamic between the two stories are the same.

Yeah um, Buffy is my favorite tv series of all time. And Spike (and Negan from TWD) are my favorite characters of all time. I genuinely didn’t care much for Buffy as a character. She’s whiny and entitled, this is illustrated by an exaggeration of her character in Dawn. Doesn’t change the fact that this was a well written show with a strong supporting cast and characters. The show wasnt great because of “Buffy”. It was great because of everyone involved.
@kalirena693 жыл бұрын
smiling.... Buffy was whiny and entitled? Oh... you mean she was a teenager? Yeah, I was NEVER like that when I was a teenager. And I wasn't self-absorbed either. Actually I think all those flaws in Buffy's character are what *make* it such a good show... and such a good metaphor for being a teenager and growing into adulthood with all the challenges (especially the ones you create for yourself.) And yeah, Spike is one of my favorite characters too... but he might not have been had he been played by anyone except James Marsters who really felt and acted so amazingly. :)

I dont think that us, people who were born decades ago should ever apology cos we were born then and did the things we did that now are under the microscope. Also, buffy is a great show, timeless and young people should learn from it, even if there are some grey areas. He is an actor and should never apology for having a job 20 years ago. Also, tv shows are ment to entertain, and are fictional. Fictional, get it ? Also, the bathroom scene out of context looks like rape attemp. If you know the whole story, spike was trying to get back to buffy in the way he knew , ruff sex, cos their relationship was like that ( i didnt know about the writer female experience, and figured it out anyway, almost every time spike begs buffy to consider him for more than sex, his attitude belongs to low woman self steam, cos he is not only a male vamp, he is also her inside darkness, as faith once was) (levels and levels of interpretations this show is, that is what back in the 90 we used to enjoy instead of being offended like a snowflake) and he was a souless vamp trying to figure out his feelings. Buffy has more power than vamps, the strength of ten men, was said in many episodes, so, she was not a normal helpless woman like we all are. Also, he inmediately realized it, regret it , apologized and went to get his soul back. Also, it was written by the director and writer and is no responsability of the actor, he was working, not celebraring rape. This society is going down if young people keep this judgement of the past thinking they worth more cos they are young and disrespecting old stuff just cos its old. Great actor and human james, in every interview he demonstrates has open mind and good heart. No need to make him go to this, repent is for bad humans. He is an actor, not spike himself. But, spike turned out to work hard to be a good man again, so, whats the point of this ? Love inst brains, children, but undestanding a show is.

I remember Seth Green laughed in disbelief when he was told that Buffy and Spike were now fuck buddies in the later seasons. the show runners should’ve stood their ground and not given in to the Spuffy shippers, Spike worked as a “frenemy” for a while, but they should’ve just killed him off instead of continuing down the slippery slope of fan service.
