Derrick. Huge fan of Fantastic Four. Read the Waid run of FF from the early 2000s. It’s a great place to start for a newcomer and really gets the tragic and emotionally complex elements of the characters. It also has Doctor Doom doing probably one of the darkest things he’s ever done. It has some quite intense drama in it while conveying the core appeal of the Four, which is that they’re a family of superheroes who have their differences but ultimately love one another.

Hey Derrick, I'm not the biggest FF fan but here's a few recommendations Marvel Knights 4 by Aguirre-Sacasa - The FF are evicted from the Baxter Building and have to live like regular people for a while. Not "dark and gritty" but very grounded, less sci-fi than usual. Plus they fight the Jersey Devil, which may pique your interest. Fantastic Four by Jonathan Hickman - Very sci-fi, lots of big uniting concepts, it's the FF on a grand scale - my favorite run but you may be lost in some of the referential details Honorable mentions: Fantastic Four 1234 - Never read it but it's weird Jae Lee art and weird Grant Morrison writing - you seem like you would be a fellow Morrison appreciator Sub-Mariner: The Depths - it's FF-adjacent but a fantastic read, like a monster movie where Namor is hunting down sailors aboard a submarine Alien-style - Ribic is one of my favorite artists and he adds a very haunting touch to this one

Fantastic Four recommendation for Derrick. The current run by Ryan North has been great. Each issue is basically a one off story akin to the Twilight Zone. Some of the stories are very dark and bizarre. It’s a great place to start I think

The 2004 comic run of space ghost was decent. Dynamite entertainment just started a new run of a serious space ghost, this time with Jace and Jan. It's serious, but lighthearted at times. Only 3 issues are out at this point so it's a great time to jump in.

Annihilatius War is a pretty fun run, with some great modern artists. Its like Marvels attempt to elevate non mutant hero-types to Omega Level powers & non earth characters allegiances expanded upon. But read 2015 secret wars with God Doom... Galactus vs Giant Sized Ben Grimm. The Silver Age Fantastic Four highlights how much the artists contributed to the writing process... Kirby Era. Taika Waititi's Thor n Hulk movie has nods to Kirby-esque elements in the set/production design ( not the tone). The concept of fantasy became more grounded in sci-fi and the most culturally successful era of fiction novelists set the precedent for young adult consumption in comic books. To Rocco's point, the 60's are campy (think Adam West Bat); circle back to Hulk n Thor.
