Finally an intelligent business analysis on how we are being taken advantage of! I was taken aback by some videos that spoke to why do people talk about price increases - these are businesses, accept them! No - the client base is intelligent we know about inflation and we know about reasonable price increases (as demonstrated by YSL to date) and we do accept them but a 130% price jump in a few years, 20-30% every few months is not normal or acceptable!

Great video. I think that as long as LV sees the crazy prices ppl are paying on resellers sites, they will keep raising the prices to match. Also, we can get fantastic quality with Coach, yet we want LV. Do not underestimate the desire of women to outdo each other. At the end of the day, we can achieve the same functionality and in many cases beauty with other brands. But, face it, we love the flex!!! Lol

I agree that the appeal for LV is canvas. It’s just a pity that LV isn’t interested in canvas. And, I think longer term that is where they are making a misstep. It’s not the price increases, it’s the backing away from canvas.

What a great video- thank you! I've been buying LV for 35 years but I think I'm mostly done with them. The frequent and hefty price increases, the lack of items I find appealing, the oversaturation in my area and subsequent feeling that it's almost not "luxury" as a result - just several years of being a bit turned-off. I have no plans of selling my bags (even if I'm not really using them) and I'll always love my slg collection, but my decades-long love affair I think is over.

I feel like I wrote this post! I have collected for almost 35 years as well! The price increase is too much for me too. The quality is not the same over the years either. I only like the canvas. It is a very saturated market and the resale is kind of dumb IMO. I would never pay that much for USED, dirty bags that are masked with the title “vintage”. It all just seems rediculous and obsessive.

LV was my 1st love for luxury bags but I only have 3 canvas ones and that’s enough. People buy them like high end high street these days. Mine are great quality but they’re not ‘It’ bags so maybe not churned out the factory so quickly. The price is fair for luxury. I wish people would say why it is not so easy to just switch allegiance from LV or Chanel to Hermès; many on KZbin don’t disclose the full amount of their Hermès spend prior to a Birkin or Kelly bag offer in store. They may show they bought a bracelet but not the scarves left folded in a drawer or the ugly earrings consigned a few months later to recoup funds. Or that the bag offered was neither a colour or style they wanted but they still took it then sold it within weeks to spend that money again in store towards another bag offer. Wish people could be happier with fewer items instead of racing towards the next.

I actually understand the statement “I may as well save for Hermès “ because it happened to me last year… I knew I was able to afford to save 5K a year without stressing my budget. I told myself that a prelove Hermès will take me 2-3 years to obtain it… but I didn’t want to wait 3 years to do also (Also knowing that in 3 years my career will pay me probably doble of what I’m making since I’ll be a PM at time), so I took a decision… picking another bag from my wishlist that it would take me only a year of saving to afford and later on once I become a PM get a Hermès… the bag I picked was Chanel… little I knew it would increase in price soooo much! In my path to save for a Chanel I ended saving enough move for a nice prelove Birkin (10K) once I get to 8K for my Chanel I realize that I was close enough for a Hermès that I may as well save for my Birkin, and found one for 10K. This statement is more for people like me who don’t have the budget to buy 3-5 purses a year for 20K… We may love all the brands, but we pick only 1 or 2 a year. We still want to purchase many bags, so we picked our favorite and what we can afford.

I agree with you perspective. I also believe LV is raising their prices to put a squeeze on the resale market. Over the last few years resellers have bought up goods and made a fortune on hiking up the prices, LV has figured that if you're willing to pay $700 for a mini pochette on Fashionphile then you can pay them that price directly.
@hellocatwalkcity2 жыл бұрын
I’m sure the resale market definitely adds to it. Although the quota bags from Hermès have the biggest resale value and yet they aren’t raising their prices nearly as much as LV is. Something to think about!

Very interesting information and video! I'm not sure that I can articulate this very well, but I think the point you're missing is that a lot of people want BOTH Louis Vuitton AND Hermes/Chanel. So if you've been saving and saving for an LV piece and they keep doing these price increases and you're getting further away from being able to buy that piece, you probably reach a point where you think, I might as well save X amount more and just get the Hermes/Chanel I wanted now, rather than the LV I was originally saving for and saving for the Hermes/Chanel later. Yes, they are very different aesthetics and styles, but it's not a matter of comparing the two to each other, it's a matter of WANTING BOTH. Hope that makes some sense.
@Vasalyn2 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. I also agree with what she said in this video. I started my luxury collection in November 2018. First LV, then Chanel, and then YSL. For me, I can't afford Hermes right now and I feel I'm not there yet in my luxury journey. However, I am glad I was able to get all the Louis Vuitton bags and SLGs I wanted since then and now. The only bag that is on my wishlist from LV that I haven't been able to get because I can't afford it atm would be a Capucines BB. In my dream luxury bag wishlist I have 4 bags on there. They are LV Capucines BB, Chanel Medium Classic Flap, Chanel Trendy CC Small, and Dior Lady Dior Medium. All these bags are the last ones on my wishlist to reach "purse peace". They are definitely expensive and have been increasing in price so much in the last couple of years. It seems like I will never be able to get one. But if I honestly had to pick one bag to save and spend my money on, it would be the Chanel because it's a classic and it's like the ultimate dream bag. I much prefer a classic flap over a capucines even tho I want both but cannot afford both. So yes, I agree with you on that.

This is a great topic for discussion so thanks for getting this started! It’s so interesting to see everyone’s view on this. I personally love LV for their consistent high quality/durability and really like the pieces I bought years ago. But recently with the drop in quality and increase in prices, I think I’m going to more careful and intentional with my purchases going forward. Just not ok with paying a few thousands for a piece that isn’t going to last me! And I agree with so many, that what draws me to LV is the monogram canvas. So if they’re moving away from monogram… I’m moving away from LV…

Very informative video. I was very surprised to hear that LV employees went on strike and unhappy employees could be the reason for quality issues. I agree you can’t just say you’re going to a different luxury house because of the price, for me personally I love Lv for their canvas and the simple designs that they offer. The Lv logo could be loud for some but it’s only gotten loud because it became very popular and people kept wearing them. We will feel the same way if we keep seeing Chanel or Hermès walking on the streets. But maybe that’s Lv”s goal to be seen less? I don’t know, my gut feeling is they will continue to increase because they have enough money in their bank that business wise they’re not trying to accommodate more people to buy their goods since they got the money why bother? Which is sad because I remember when I first got my speedy 25 18years ago for $450 , I didn’t know anything about luxury bags at all I just like how it looks on my friend that’s why I bought it. And the feeling it gave me was amazing when I started carrying it. It just makes you feel special for some reason that I can’t explain and I for one is not into fashion, I don’t read fashion magazines either so it just shows you how Lv design captured my attention even though I don’t know anything about being fashionable. They just speak to me and got me…

Loved this video and agree with all your thoughts at the end. I LOVE my canvas pieces and have several in my collection, including what I consider to be the basic SLGs - pochette accessoires, mini pochette accessoires, key pouch, round coin purse, all in the Mono print (I also have a zippy coin purse in vernis leather but that's a one-off). The SLG piece I probably love the most though is my full size zippy wallet in the Mono print travelers illustre which I believe was the first illustre that LV released back in 2012 depicting travelers at a train station which was based on a vintage LV illustration from their archives. I love the historical nod to the brand. I also own several bags that I am attached to, again all in the Mono print. I started my Mono collection in 2006 and for some time now I have been keen on starting to collect the basics and build a wardrobe in damier ebene but there is no way I'm going to pay the prices that they're asking for now. I purchased my mini pochette accessoires in 2019 for $360 CAD and last night I went on the website to see if anything I'm interested in is in stock and saw that piece is now $950 CAD. Then I looked at the pochette accessoires that I paid $685 CAD for also in 2019 and now it's $1,640 CAD. That's almost a $1,000 increase in three years for a canvas pouch. How outrageous! I completely understand price increases but these kinds of increases are not acceptable to me. I don't want to move to other fashion houses because I love LV for many reasons, including the history of the brand. And I totally agree with you that I will stick with what I have (and I also do not agree with the toiletry 26 being re-released with a chain strap! that is a classic piece that should be left alone!). I love my LV canvas pieces and I have an attachment to the brand. I can't just go to another fashion house because of the price increases. So I'm not buying anything right now and will stick it out and see what happens in the future. I'm sure my wallet will thank me for it in the time being.

Just my few cents' worth as a fund manager. I would attribute the drop in LV's share prices as just the normal investors selling on news. The share price has crept up in anticipation of the price increase and once it materialized, they are just banking some profits as they always do. Long-term share price outlook remains solid. On a personal level, I am not much of an LV fan as a company (I do not understand how they can be so big yet so miserly with their workers and SAs) and their products, except for the Speedy.

I totally agree with you about "might as well save for Hermes" not resonating. I thought I was the only one who didn't get that mentality! I personally really like Chanel bags and the brand. I like their bag styles, the wide range of colors they release, the many options available, and even the boutique experience. Even though it's painful how much prices have increased, even if they were the same price as a Kelly or Birkin, I wouldn't then spend that money at Hermes. I don't like Hermes' bag styles personally, and I don't have much interest in the brand at all. Everyone writes off Chanel, LV, Dior, etc because now they're approaching Hermes prices so everyone should save their money for Hermes and you're an idiot for doing anything else.....but even if the price points were switched, I'd still opt for a Chanel bag or Dior bag over Hermes 🤷 They're each entirely different brands with different offerings.

I absolutely agree with you on the buying Hermes, because LV or Chanel keep increasing their prices. I think those could be people who already love both and seeing the price increases, they might think to pull the trigger and go with Hermes instead. For me, personally, I own a good small LV collection, and thinking to add 3 more pieces and that would be what's in my radar from this brand. I am not panic buying, as I give priority to savings, investments and travels. So I am not in a rush to buy now, because there could be a price increase tomorrow. If the prices go so up that I can't afford them, then it is fine, I can live without. They are just material things in the end! I like some Hermes pieces, mainly homeware, but for example I don't like their quota bags (B, K, C), so I don't see myself playing any games or buying them and I got offered one and declined. It is not just my style and it is not functional to me. Maybe one day, when I will be older, I might change opinion, who knows!

That just didn’t add up for me but that’s why I love reading all the comments here bc I get to hear different perspectives. Thanks for sharing!

I’ll never forget the story that one Hermès SA shared with me about how well they were treated by the company. And when I talk with my Chanel and LV SAs, I get a very different vibe. They seem tired and overworked (and perhaps underpaid) 😔 which doesn’t make me feel good as a consumer.

Enjoyed this video so much, while the info still made me mad, lol. It appears Hermès is one of the last luxury brands that remains independent, and is also of the highest quality. I had heard elsewhere that LV was planning to stick a chain on the toiletry pouch -- what absolute nonsense!! Why would I buy a travel pouch to store toiletries, and want a chain to fuss with? It's bad enough on the mini pochette, which I tolerate because it's occasionally useful. I'm so glad I got my toiletry 19 a year ago. Thanks Hannah.

I think with the mini bag trend, brands are in general overcharging for bags. I also think that more than ever people dont spend as much on ready to wear pieces as one can wear a basic affordable GAP/Zara etc outfit beautifully paired with a luxury accessory. I only have 2 LV pieces, a neverful GM and an empreinte leather wallet. I have not bought anything in ages because it doesnt appeal to me but whenever i think of buying a capucines, they come up with prince increases and puts me off. I am a Chanel lover and i prefer leather craftmanship than canvas.

This was great. About the canvas, I wish LV had not changed the quality of it. The vintage is defiantly better. I think it would be a big mistake to get rid of it altogether but regardless I’ll be spending my money on better quality vintage canvas.

I think they just can’t keep up with the demand. My husband is self employed and from the point of view of running a business, when the demand gets high and if it’s not practical to increase the production, you really only have two options, let the items get rare (impossible to buy) or increase the price. I think Hermès uses the first tactic and Chanel and LV is using the latter. For highly specialized items, it takes time to hire and train the right people and get the materials. My husband doesn’t even advertise his items because if the demand increases too fast, we will be forced into bankruptcy immediately because he won’t be able to hire and train people fast enough and increasing the price isn’t an option for us because we are just in the early stages. (This is when mass production isn’t an option. The whole point of these items are that they are hand-crafted by highly trained artisans. )

I bought my shares around the same time you did in anticipation of the Tiffany & Co purchase. I agree with your comments especially the one regarding moving to other brands. Also to put it in perspective, no one makes a big deal about increases in cost of iPhones whenever they get released but people jump at buying them even if they have perfectly functioning phone or there are perfectly fine phones from lesser costing brands. My point is that everyone places a different value on specific things and what they feel is worth their money. For some, these bags may no longer be worth it- for me, nothing new has caught my eye- but never say never 😉

Thanks for sharing, I always appreciate your commentary. I will say this, while I understand your thoughts that LV versus Hermes is like comparing apples to oranges, I think you may have missed their point of the comment. For example, I own for the most part Coach, LV and Chanel pieces. There are times when I look at my Coach pieces, whether they are leather or canvas and compare them to my LV pieces in terms of their style, quality and function. With those comparisons, I don't necessarily think I'm comparing apples to oranges I'm looking at them in terms of function more so but sometimes style and certainly lately quality as well. The reality is that if people are saving up to buy their first luxury item, they are looking at entry level pieces and brands which used to be LV and now if the prices are so close between the entry level and the cream de la cream then I think they are saying why not wait a bit longer for that cream de la cream branded piece instead. Just my thoughts. Thanks again!

Very thought provoking. Love your insight into all this. Even though as you mentioned prices will continue to increase no doubt and people will continue to buy I think because the more expensive something is the more they want it. As you as an investor you go girl lol As a consumer sucks for us but big companies get our hard earned money either way since they own a lot of companies as you mentioned, there is no escaping. I hope these big companies learn to take care of their employees because it’s sad that we live in a world where the rich get richer and the rest just live life as best they can with the opportunities they get and like you said, a company is successful because of their employees and the hard work they put in so hopefully they get treated fairly and compensated apropriately for all that they do. I also personally love the canvas because of the history and how it’s so representative of the brand and will last forever which obviously when you pay a lot of money is what you would expect but I hope they don’t fully discontinue the canvas pieces since those have proven to be in demand and from a business standpoint why fix something that isn’t broken.

I was just in my local LV boutique to drop off a repair and there was a monogram mini pochette in the display case. I have been trying to get my hands on one for the last two years with no success. I did not want to pay $540 after the last price increase (however I would have probably done it if it was sitting in front of me at the boutique). I did not purchase or even ask to look at it. Seeing it proved a point in my mind that people are not paying the prices. It was kind of liberating though walking out of the store and not feeling like I missed out on something.

It be interesting to see when LV pushes out middle class buyers and eventually upper middle class buyers to be wiped out of purchasing power to buy LV. Will LV continue to thrive with profits they been enjoying for so many years. Or will they survive with just the top earners as sole core customers.

Thank you for a very informative video. As regards to the LV/Chanel SLG comparison there’s none. The LV has a “gusset” which allows for the expansion of the SLG (width wise), whereas Chanel does not & obviously holds far less. As someone that does a little bit of sewing you can clearly see the benefit of the LV against Chanel. They’re both good products but are different in the way the can be utilised (despite looking similar).

My first luxury handbag was from LV, and.... though I'm not a fan of logomania, I love.. the LV monogram (am a fan of japanese motifs). That being said, this recent price increase leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Not because I can no longer afford them but because I'm starting to feel.. ripped off. Like you, I'm an emotional buyer. I care about what kind of feelings my purchases evoke in me. The feeling of being ripped off is definitely something I'm not gonna pay for.

@ek.g.99752 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the video. What I really don't like is them trying to change their customers. Them raising prices like that is basically saying they don't want me to buy, I'm not their customer. I have many bags and several slg's, and I'm done buying from LV. I could buy more but I'm choosing not to. This brand becomes about profit only, not their history, not the quality. Who are they trying to sell this stuff to? Only rich people who don't care about the money? It's like buying fashion jewelry from Chanel...for the prices they charge they could definitely use fine silver and natural pearls (which is not expensive at all!!!). I never bought Chanel jewelry for that reason. Now LV became just like that. I always liked how more or less affordable they were comparing to Chanel and Hermes. I liked that they had more classics, better quality. It felt luxurious, and it was about the history. It does not feel this way anymore even though it's more expensive. It's disgusting to me. I don't really know how to explain what I feel, but it's not so much about the money. It's more about LV changing it's course and becoming something else...something I no longer want to be a part of, and it's sad.

Such interesting points you make. I think a brand is constantly evolving and reinventing itself but depending on the direction they take, it can start to alienate certain consumers - even the loyal ones. We’ll have to see what happens over the next few years. And I agree with you completely - never been a fan of the Chanel costume jewelry!
@reginaedgin49372 жыл бұрын
I think part of the reason people are feeling like they should just buy from Chanel, buy the O case instead of the mini pochette is... 1. the price increase is putting them on a level playing field. yes I love the canvas pieces but IF l feel that Louis Vuitton is pricing out of their canvas. As well as not keeping up with the quality, in fact they are selling a subpar quality of their canvas. Plus They're also not offering anything extra with their price increases, and if the canvas bags are not as durable or hard wearing as they once were... 2. Louis Vuitton is known to be pushing their leather they're not or they don't seem to be concerned about their canvas. I have watched other KZbinrs that will tell you they do not reward their sales associates much on the sale canvas pieces. they want them to push push push the leather... so if I'm going to end up buying leather to satisfy my want of durability and quality as well buying a luxe brand. I'll buy it somewhere else Because I don't go to Louis Vuitton for their leather. As well as now I'm getting subpar canvas at a way higher price that isn't as durable as it once was. So maybe leather from another brand is the smartest choice vs the canvas from LV... 🤷just my guess... Great video ♥️

Such great points. I agree for leather, LV is not my first choice either so I understand what you’re saying. I do wish LV would pay more attention to their canvas and really honor their canvas history and heritage more than they are these days. This has been big news over the last two years. Luxury goods turned huge profits during the pandemic. There is nothing to justify the price increases except for greed. Their operating costs have not increased that much, material costs haven’t increased that much. And, to give 150 euros is a drop in the bucket, it’s.22 euros an hour, certainly not excessive. If some of the money went towards the workers that could justify some of the increase, but clearly it’s not. I’m sure Mr. Arnault could afford to give a much larger raise without losing a cent. And to think they had to strike for that paltry amount, is shameful.

LV grew out of touch with reality. It is 2022 and consumers are expecting their brands to be more fair to their workers, more sustainable in their materials, and more ethical by giving back to charitable causes that involve social justice and the environment. As of 2020, I intentionally limited my LV purchases to pre-owned only, as I don't consider LV an ethical brand that I would like to support - by buying their products new, or investing in their shares. The message behind current LV pricing is that of Marie-Antoinette's "Let them eat cake". But each of us, of course, is free to make our choice 😉👍

Enjoyed the video. Respectfully your last point did not make sense to me (comparing brands). Most people buy the bags for the status image they portray and not the fact one is canvas vs leather. LV is popular for the canvas and that is how it is marketed (because it is the introduction to the brand). So the canvas look goes hand and hand with being able to get into the door of LV. If their leather cost the same price from the beginning of the companies creation, the canvas would not even be their "image" for the brand (it would probably be some huge LV buckle). If somebody could get the status name for Hermes or Chanel for the same price as LV, they would because it is about the brand image and not the material. That is my thoughts. Feel free for all to jump in with your thoughts. If both cost the same price (which is the direction LV is trying to move it seems), would you care the material and just want the brand that has the most prestige? Or would you buy based on what material each brand is know for if they cost about the same?
