Granny always told me "Taysha, you are a GIVER and GIVERS have to set limits because TAKERS never do". It's so hard because the joy I get out of giving and being of service to others goes so much further than anything else I've experienced in life. Limits. Definitely need to set limits, as we can see here with poor Rahat. Another thing Granny used to say (which I believe is in the Bible?) "The WICKED will NEVER prosper from ill-gotten gain". I've seen the truth of that statement play out so many times.

People outside of the low income community, should not directly "help" people withen in low income community. Simply put, Rahat had not come up in the environment and did not have the necessary skills to detect Eric's deceptions. Anybody from the community could've immediately told that Eric was not a genuine person from the start. Game recognize game, and Rahat was a mark, an easy one. Hope Rahat can recover from this life lesson.

That's the point of this case though. I'm sure Eric had the same feeling when he received that support. But because he was given the huge amount money without having to work for it, he felt it would be an ongoing thing and deemed the low paying job worthless compared to the amount he's getting through donations. He abused it and started to want more money to feed his addiction, and when he wasn't getting more he turned to bite the hand that fed him.

@@dagmarland I grew up VERY poor. I'm talking almost 100% of my clothes were from flea markets till I was about 18. We could only afford a certain amount of food every day, so I had a BMI of 17.3. My advantage was that my parents actually had pretty good education and I had friends. I have spent WAY too much money too many times. I have been late on rent many times, even went $2500 into debt with a friend at one point, but I promised to pay him back, and I did. Today I own a house and use most of my savings to renovate it. I would say I'm better than the average person at budgeting. If people put in an effort, they can learn how to spend their money.

Rahat you are an awesome human being. Reaching out to change lives takes a pretty special kind of person. Tragically there are so many con artists out there. He and his cronies certainly proved that they deserve to be destitute and homeless. I really hope you can come back from this and be a lot more assertive. Perhaps next time, you can set a goal and when that target has been reached, your followers know that the balance would be used to assist somebody else, and so on. This really became a nightmare for you. There are so many hard earned lessons here. You have the friends, the documentation, and more than enough witnesses to be more credible than the lost cause you tried to help. As for Raz or whatever his name is, he used a biased and uncorroborated interview to up his subscribers and income. "Seemingly", the word he himself used, should have made him ask more questions before he posted any of it.

The thing is, Rahat gave him too much. He started with a house. This is crazy. Should have started with a small apartment. Should have the homeless choose the furniture. Help to carry the furniture into the small apartment. Like all normal people start their life when they start a job. Then the homeless could have worked his way up being supported by the money. Little by little he could have grown into a person that is able to run a house and a job. Rahat wasted the fundraiser on just one guy who was not ready for this amount of money. Should have founded a common house for a group of homeless guys. Maybe one or two of the group would have made it to a job.

This is why the average citizen has no business simply “helping” the homeless to this degree. A lot of us oversimplify the problem of homelessness and think “oh if only I could give them a house, car, and job- their life would be perfect.” Not taking into account the added complexities of a life spent on the street such as substance abuse issues. He had great intentions but none of the expertise to back such expectations. He was out of his depth and really should have outsourced this to those who had more experience. It’s unfortunate that it was such an extreme way to learn a lesson.
@NicciStarzz
@NicciStarzz 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly, very well said! As a former homeless person, I had many issues beyond not having a home. I had to deal with my substance abuse and trauma and mental health before I was able to actually hold a job, go to college, etc. Now, I will have my Master's in Psychology in June and currently have my CADC, an AA in Sociology, and an AA in Human Services. While having someone help me like Rahat helped Eric MAY have fixed things for me for awhile, I inevitably would have ran through the money because of my addiction and ended up on the streets again. Without the skills to stay sober and keep the house and job, just being given a house or job means very little beyond a temporary fix

I agree totally, where I live we have a very high homeless population, almost 30% of our population is homeless, and from what I have seen and experienced a lot of them suffer from substance abuse and mental illness, both. And until they can get help in that regard giving them a house and money won’t change their behaviors that got them in their position in the first place. There are definitely people out there that life just gave them the wrong cards, they probably have the best chance of turning things around vs dealing with addiction or mental illness.
@chundur4216
@chundur4216 3 жыл бұрын
Yup exactly. It’s generally best to just show compassion and if you want to get them something, help them find shelter, substance abuse help, or buy them some necessities like food or clothing. In the end, after he died the whole town thought my sister and I were awful daughters who shut our dad out in his time of need. They didn’t know the whole truth. @- Rahaat isn’t white though? I hear you, when you mentioned the struggles of addiction and what pushes them that far. But this has nothing to do with race. And everything to do with a man child who isn’t ready to get better. No it isn’t easy, but he has to will it. Instead, he decided to show off in a limousine ride almost everyday and blew his money.

How sad. A good person does a huge favor to someone, and it ends up ruining their life? In my opinion, Eric and Razz should be in jail for this. I hope Rahat can recover from all of this and in time, may it become a faded memory for him. And to those asking about the rest of the money... Don't! You heard Rahat say that he had to pay taxes on that money, so he should be entitled to the remaining amount, if any. Not to mention pain and suffering. I can't believe people would ask. How tacky. Eric is a sorry excuse for a human being. He went from life on the street to riding in limos.. then claims he never got the money, but people saw the limos didn't they?

You can't just give a homeless person a house and loads of money and expect everything to be fine and dandy. People living on the street for a while, can't look at the long term, they get by from day to day. That's how they survive. I realize it's easy to say this in hindsight, but for everybody wanting to help homeless people: get professional help from people specialized in helping the homeless.

I feel for Rahat. If you feel called to philanthropy and altruism, you have to have a very thick skin and be prepared for disappointments. The percentage of assistance that results in long term change or solutions is very small. You have to find enough nourishment in that small percentage to sustain you through the failures, and learn not to take it personally. Very very hard to do, and compassion fatigue is very real and common. But - we need folks like Rahat, with a genuinely caring spirit and a transformation mindset. Now more than ever. Rahat, I encourage you to use this lesson as a platform from which to continue. You can effect real change, and you have purpose. Revise and rise, Good Man!
