It’s UK hip hop with a UK sentiment which usually involves some form of humour within the wordplay. He ain’t pretending he’s Mobb Deep, Wu-Tang, NAS etc, he can only tell a story from a UK perspective to keep it authentic. Besides, he’s a multitalented musician who’s just happened to make a rap album so he’s bringing something to a genre that has backed itself into a corner and become contrived - he’s adding another layer to the art form. He ain’t pretending to be from “the hood” and I kinda admire that because it would have been such an easy mistake to make. Again, ‘Genesis’ has zero humorous filler bars. Most hip hop heads with an agenda tend to stay away from that one though.

He is a character in this too. The video ends up in a cliffhanger. Someone has said that it leads to Animal flow with the man tied up in the first scene.

An important thing to remember is that Ren is first and last an artist. He had a big label. He's been there, done that, followed the rules and walked away. Now he's performing entirely without anyone's rules other than his own, and it works. He's 33 by the way. His sophistication and intelligence about what he's doing is at least 10 years older than that.

I would make a bit of a correction to this. He WAS signed to a subsidiary of Sony. Right around that time he became ill. Eventually so ill that he had to go back to live with his mother in Wales and he was unable to fulfill his end of the contract. Which at the time for him was utterly devastating. So he didn't "follow the rules". He was unable to complete his contract. The result is that he has had to chase his career independently (and successfully) but he has stated that he has no hard feelings for Sony and what transpired. He has also said that (although he would not wish it on anyone) he would never have written his breakout piece Hi Ren if he had not been so ill. Life is weird.

@@jeanwyenberg2774 You and I see the phrase "following the rules" differently. To me, it's a willingness to do it all, and he had that when he signed with Sony. What you said happened after is true, but he's had big label opportunities since and knows that it isn't what he wants now. Or so he's said in his posts. I'll take him at his word. Very difficult for me to believe that with the success he's had recently there haven't been labels willing to take a chance. He prizes his independence (the description on the song Power?). He's talked frequently about the importance of artistic choices. I stand by what I said.

It makes me laugh. Why do Americans get so het up about lines that are slightly rude or use swear words. Britain is less puritanical than the USA, we don't give a second thought to what Ren just said in Murderer. Why?
