Scud patterns work really well here in Maine. Perch, Crappie, Pike, Trout, they all love that pattern

Great action! I hope I can get out to the ocean this year. Maybe in Jan.

That was great when the first fish hit. I've had something similar happen often. You aren't paying attention to a rod with something in the water and a fish goes after it. Last week, I was drifting in my kayak and had a wiggle hoochie behind a dodger about five feet out while I was prepping a second rod. A rainbow hit it so hard I almost had the rod pulled out of the boat.

I am a Kokanee snob that normally releases trout. But those two monsters (regs permitting) would have me sorely tempted when it comes to keeping vs. releasing, looks like a few meals there. Fortunately we live in the digital age so that we can easily document our trophies. Ice fishing looks like so much fun.

Don't know if it still exists but Wright McGill at one time had their corporate office ilocated near downtown Denver. Back in the 80's you could visit their Eagle Claw customer desk and pick up a brand new rod or reel for around 5 to 10 bucks each. The gear didn't offer similar performance of other much more expensive brands but what they made and sold was always durable. I hope you have a Merry Christmas and thanks for sharing all the great content you captured and posted this year.

I was gunna say...I wouldve already had a fish on, on most of the lakes I fish...it can be a challenge to get bait past the trout at 10-20 feet to the perch well below that...=)

Also your automatic hook setter what brand was that? Thanks
@AK_Ray23 күн бұрын
It's an "Alaska fish trap". They're out of business. You can build one with a mouse trap

@@spiltmilt Ah. Been asking a few times. been trying my own hand made ones, but the fish seem to pound it without release... but, when I touch it, sprang!!!!!! Ah, well, made some mods over eh summer, can't wait to find some ice.

Are you rigging your flies with any weight other than the hook? Are you using split shots?
@spiltmilt23 күн бұрын
No split shot just the fly

The first rod and reel did get the job done, but you can hear that it's not nearly as smooth as the 2nd reel in the video in both the reeling and drag system. But most any combo will work. I see the scud was tied with a blue hue line, any lessons learned regarding line colors?
@spiltmilt23 күн бұрын
For sure not the smoothest reel. The blue line is Berkley ice line. The color doesn't seem to deter the trout. I have a video on line visibility below the ice here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6TPanRmo7CBmdU

Any chance I can get some of your scuds and blobs? I would be willing to pay of course. Love watching your videos and every time you grow out it seems like they are smashing those blobs for sure..
@spiltmilt22 күн бұрын
I am not making the blobs but the scuds can be bought in the links in the description.
