So I’m having this done on Monday on my L4. 6 months of PT, steroid injections and nothing is helping. I stopped PT and almost immediately started feeling better. 2 months in with no pain, and one morning my back gave out again. This time I was wheelchair bound for almost 2 weeks. So I agreed to do the surgery. But reading these comments have gave me great points to ask my doctor. I’m only 33 and my spine isn’t getting any better

Same here! I'm going for surgery tomorrow 4/18. I had an L5 discectomy in January 2021. My L5 ruptured after falling onto the toliet when my back gave out randomly. It caused permant peroneal nerve damage down my entire left leg & half the foot. Then reherniated around same area at the PT place like 3 months post surgery. I suffered large blood clots in the left knee (damaged the nerve on the femoral head) & ankle/foot as well after surgery. Now I will be going for a P.L.I.F tomorrow at L5-s1 and to now hopefully stablize it as well. I feel your pain! Good luck on your surgery 🙏 💓 🥰🥰🥰

My doc did my L5S1 fusion by the anterior approach, when I see how complicated the posterior approach is, I say a silent thank you to my doc. If only I hadn't gotten addicted, no no excuse me, dependent, on prescription pain meds, (Lortab, I am looking at you) the whole job would have been perfect. My back healed up great, but it took 5 years to get off pain meds.

I'm confused. What's the purpose of joning the 2 vertebrae? I only see one could have decreased mobility. Is it to eliminate the pain from disc pressing on the nerve?

Pain meds are a deal with the Devil. I don’t know if I will ever be free of them. So much pain so many places. Thankfully I tolerate them well and am not compelled to abuse.

Yes, once a disk is degenerated and weak there’s no saving it. The nucleons herniation will keep leaking out and pressing on your nerves. It sucks because a fusion only leads to more down fusions down the road.

I am 2 weeks 6 days out from surgery. I left hospital after 4 days. I stopped 98% of pain killers after i left hospital. I take Panadeine forte and lyrica only 1-2 times a day. I have surgery pain but nothing that i can handle. My hips and left leg get very tight which i gently stretch every day now that im feeling less pain. Stretching slightly helps with sharp pain. I walk as much as i can. I started my own light weight-body weight exercise. My surgery took 7hrs. The ruptured part of my disc had grown around the nerve and turned into bone. When i woke up my face, chest and arms were very sore from laying on it for so long. The first 4 days was very very painful. But i kept going. Dont give up.

I just had both a PLIF fusion and a TLIF fusion on my L4-S1 last Monday. My drop foot has improved significantly. I'm slowly recovering, walking when I can. The surgeon told me that the worst thing I could do is stay in bed all day. I'm not in as much pain as I thought would be and I'm improving every day!

Ryan Chansler [e-mail] is my email Ryan I would love to talk about your procedure and foot drop as I had a lumbar surgery a year ago and was fused from L4-S1 with 2 cages immediately after surgery I had foot drop on my right side and no explanation why this happened. I’m waiting for my 2nd surgery now to have a new Surgeon address severe spinal stenosis in my L3-L4 and remove the screws from my last fusion he said my foot drop is permanent 😢

i am scheduled for same surgery on march 27th, kinda getting cold feet after i have heard the low success rate and the adjacent disc syndrome that often happens with more surgeries needed. I hope you are well now. Can you tell me how you are feeling now. I was thinking of getting the nerve stimulator device instead. Would you reccomend the fusion over the stimulator? Thank you.

Cindy Shanks Hi Cindy, I’m sorry to hear your going through the same thing. As for me I am preparing for a 2nd Lumbar Fusion of my L3-L4 I’ll be fused from L3-S1 when it’s all said and done. Considering I just had my back surgery a year ago it’s a shame.Your right about the other disc being compromised it’s almost guaranteed. Do you have stenosis? I was never offered the stimulater. I will say that I workout everyday and soak in epsom salt each night it makes a difference. My foot drop is permanent as a result of my back surgery If you can avoid this procedure do so as long as you can. Our bodies are designed to heal themselves so long as we take care of them. Keep me posted I wish you well.

my doctor said if you did this, the adjacent disc would degenerate faster by compensation of bending to the fused disc... hence, you would keep doing fusions every couple of years.... god bless you

I love the ending - Less invasive :) - How? There will be drills, saws, hammers, knives, screwdrivers, involved in cutting, chopping, and stuffing - finally glueing, sewing and taping. Follows are lots of pain medication, therapy, and weakness until you recover fully - but if you are lazy, don't expect an easy road to it - how do I know this? I had three surgeries :) on my back, I wear the scars proudly!

@@sanaparker6257 Ok so this'll be very relatable to you. I just recently had my L5S1 fused for reverse spondylolisthesis (where bone moves forward instead of backward, but effect is the same unstable spine). I also had a herniated disc between my l5 and s1. So fusion is the only way to correct it. Unfortunately I didn't have a choice and I doubt neither do you if you have herniation as well. I just got out, 2 months in and so far 0 pain. I'd suggest do your research first and get a good doctor. I did my research and saw multiple surgeons and the one I went with did it from the pelvis (ANTERIOR) and I had no screws on my back. I'm 75% of the way to normal activity, but that's bc I'm being EXTREMELY careful and not overextending my spine and working to strengthen my muscles to keep a good back and taking it one day at a time. Hope this helps :)

Британский профессор просто сказал , что со временем воспаление грыжи прекращается и она уменьшается и образуется на месте разрыва типа защитного хряща , но у каждого время на это разное , зависит от возраста и здоровья . В начале надо обезбаливать и снять нагрузку со спины везде и учиться правильно ходить и лежать .А такие операции только при сильных травмах дисков спины когда человек парализован .

It become infected and 9 days later i was in intensive care having almost died from septic shock. After 11 days in hospital, a month on IV antibiotics at home and 17 months of oral antibiotics (with a further six months to go) I am disappointed to report that the fusion has made no difference to my pain.

Would like to add a comment about infection. There is nothing more painful or dangerous than infection in the spine after surgery. I know of many people that have under gone successful surgeries and never had a hint of infection and one's incision continued to seep for nearly three weeks. Here are some hints on how to avoid infection. 1) do exactly as they say regarding washing the area days before leading up to the surgery. Do not spare the soap and use clean, clean towels and wash cloths EACH TIME. 2) Change your bed sheets after each sanitizing bath. This is important because you are killing that bacteria that lingers on the body over those days. Do not contaminate yourself with the same sheets you got out of hours ago. 3) You need to evict your pets. Absolutely no pets before or after surgery on your side of the bed. I am sorry to inform you but that is where most infections are carried from. Animals carry bacteria all over them as we do. But remember you did not wash your cat or your dog with that soap three times before surgery and its still the same bacteria laden animal it was before the surgery. Evict your pet until you are completely healed and safe yourself a lot of pain, hospital time and money.

The only thing i sopped were heavy squats but ill live. Wish you the best. Max out all the holistic approaches first then look into it if it doesn't get better. PT, Stretch and build up strength in your glute Medius.

fact, fusions are not natural movement after and has a high risk for ongoing pain after that comes and goes long term because cutting of the bone like that. is why so many still have issues after disc fusions. I refused that type of treatment, but now after surgery it never hurts. i have issues with other areas, but 4 of my lumbar needed it and today they are pain-free. i think i made the right choice. I made it due to it being not a normal movement after...

As someone that has gone through this TWICE, I think I can give a certain amount of experience as in a comment. First of all, I had a fractured vertebrae caused from playing with my dog. She was simply pulling on her pull toy and I was stupid enough to hang on. Being 77 age the time, probably contributed to the weakness in my CORE...which is basically what we are talking about. That surgery went very, very well. One reason I believe it did was I made myself aware of what exactly they were going to do and the ramifications of it. Yes, it is a major surgery and they WILL move stuff around A LOT and you WILL need some major recovery time. They take out bones and crush them up and make bone paste and they use tools that when listed looks like an auto mechanics major overhaul list on a drive shaft or whatever. I went through one year of required PT of all sorts before my insurance would pay for an MRI. That was NOT fun and YOU will remember that pain. So after the problem was discovered I schooled myself on exactly what the doctor was going to do. I knew I would have to let my body adjust to the adjustments.. And its exactly that. If they took a bone out of here, then you may end up with unwanted cartilage there requiring removal later at some point. I didn't know that so when I had to have another fusion I was indeed, just a little pissed. BUT, that was not the doctors fault. Its called genetics. If your family has a history of arthritis, of bone cartilage gathering ...like in your knees, the fusion will be an real event in your life...perhaps ongoing. Anyway, I apparently have that. Once more, it was my dog who was unable to negotiate steps into the house after an injury and I, of course, tried to help her. Then I tried to help my husband do something neither of us should be doing. ....and well, there is that. Second fusion had to disturb the first because the four screws and holes with two bars illustrated above had to be partially disassembled in order to allow the replacement of longer bars extending UP from the original fusion. In six years all that had grown together in a nice neat little unbreakable package and as a weld in a tube might be stronger than the either side of the weld, so isn't this! Without going into a lot of long words, we can just assumed I had to have four more holes in the L's above and longer bars to cover that distance of vertebrae. I just want anyone that DID read all this to realize, that it is worth it IF you have the time and patience to let your body heal. The first four or five days are wretched as any surgery. It is not so much the pain from the, now, eight screws and longer bars in bone...at least my assessment is more the pain coming from cutting and pulling the skin back from the area of the surgery....muscles, fat etc, the little ratchet used to dig out all that excessive cartilage your body tries to put in there to shore up your problem.....which eventually just causes more trouble. All that has to settle down and go someplace safe. If you can imagine putting a bunch of stuff in a jar and shaking it up ....some stuff is fastened there and some just needs to find its place. Do exactly as they tell you. Wear that brace if planning on being up for more than ten minutes. How all that grows back is important. Imagine each move you make will make a difference. Cause ...it does. Don't bend from the waist or twist for a long, long time. Do not walk or do too many laps in your house trying to impress yourself or neighbors. They do not care and you will appreciate how caring YOU are about YOU. Just start out with a goal of three or four...adding one or two laps each week. Go on a diet if you are heavy and have an overhang. All that is pulling on that work they did. Eat lightly and lose some of that. You will appreciate it in the long run and your brace will fit better too. Even after two or three months thee will be times you just want to go to bed. GO TO BED. Its ok...unless you are still working and then you need a kind boss. Baby yourself and all that work will pay off. You will appreciate the fact that you can no longer tell you had surgery. You have a scar but it will not interfere with your life as long as you are sensible and do not try to. be a gymnast. Once you are up and going ....about two, three months...do push yourself to go just a little further when you walk. It will pay off. Nothing fantastic...just make progress a little at a time. Today I am in my 7th day out from surgery. As I set here, I KNOW I had surgery...it hurts but not like it did before the surgery. I will have to go back to bed soon because I have been up for over 30 min. If I do not I will set myself back two days. So if you have to have this done...accept it, do it, take your time and you will be fine. Or you can suffer the rest of your life and look like an old person way too soon. :))

@Denise Colunga if you do have this surgery DO everything they tell you to do exactly as they tell you to do it. Do not skip this or that. These spinal surgeries are done over and over, most quite successful but much depends on YOUR attitude going into it. If you THINK you will be two years recovering, you will be. I have always saw myself as an active spirit housed in this imperfect body. I treat it like a separate entity that I am a caregiver for. I give it all the advantages I am aware and try and treat it as logically as possible. But when it needs to step up then I consider myself well . Only other advise I have is what is right for one person may not be so good for another. I have little tolerance for pain meds. So I am not on them long. Be mindful of the pills you are taking, how YOU are feeling and are they helping or causing other side effects you do not need. I prefer ICE over pills. Usually am not on pain meds more than four days. I break out in hives, get night sweats and general all around imbalance on opioids. Get off them as soon as possible. Just sayin'.

Thank you for this, super encouragement. I just had my second operation on Dec.13, 2019. The first was Dec. 2014. Learned alot. I had Degenerative Bone disease and you could push me over with a feather. I was urinating and deficating spontaneously. This time I have 4 screws and two rods and two TLIFS . My pain is gone and I feel strong, not trying to impress anyone if I need to sit or lay down that's what I do. No more nerve pain HALLELUJAH. L5-S1 was my issue. I am 48 year old male and I was scared as a little school girl but I'm pain free and loving life.

@@ikethornton3600 A lot of this adjacent level syndrome people talk about is sometimes unavoidable. You said you had degenerative bone disease. Some levels may become injured and require surgery. It will be just a matter of time before you injure another. Your insurance can also screw you up. I have seen it many times. A patient would be scheduled for, say, a 3 level fusion. The insurance company steps in and declares that they will approve one level, the worst one, but not the other 2 levels. I could see when looking through their chart that it would only be a matter of time before this patient would be back for the next level. They even denied my husband's ALIF. The surgeon got someone, a real person, at my insurance company on the phone. He argued my husband's symptoms. He finally got a laminectomy/decompression approved. That helped for around a year before the symptoms started returning. He ended up having the XLIF at L4/5. Then the ALIF at L 3/4 a couple of years later. Long story, sorry. My point was that unfortunately your insurance company can have a big hand in what, if any, treatment you'll get. It's frustrating. These people have no medical experience or education, yet they can and do tell your spine surgeon what yhey will be allowed to do!

Sometimes the damage to the nerve prior to the surgery is so bad the nerves can never heal completely. It seems like your are in that boat and sorry to hear that. I have a grade 2 L5-S1 and my pain is mostly local to lower back. I have had this for 12 years. I used to get a lot of radiating pain to the legs. My only option is surgery but my doc flat out told me to not get it unless I started having tons of leg pain or numbness. Otherwise surgery wont really take away that much pain in my current format. I foresee needing it at some point. I have moderate disk loss and severe nerve root flatting. The root one scares me since I am worried it might have been pinched for so long the surgery wont even fix it

Ask if your surgeon has IOM ( intraoperative monitoring) during surgery?) We have been using it for years. Tiny needles are placed after you're asleep- from head to toe. Your nerves will be monitored throughout the procedure. A neurologist will be watching the screen too. Tests are conducted after screws are placed to check for correct placement. I'm sure you can find some videos here on YT to better explain this. It does give the patient a better chance for a successful surgery.

I think there may be a better way to not have fusion but have replacement part that will mimic the original configuration. This means provide flexibility. In this replacement part you could provide additional features to make it even better than the original human version. People this is not that difficult. Consult a structural and vibration specialist. If people ask me I will even do it for free in order to serve humanity.

If yall could go to mexico, theres a 89yr old man, that can fix any injury, i fell in the shower landed on my back, couldn't walk for months and the only thing that doctors could do was SURGERY!!😂😂 i was diagnosed with 2 herniated discs! I was hopeless, i knew surgery wasnt the best option! So i talked to a friend that knew this old man, got his number talked to him, he asked a couple of questions and just by phone he said yes you do have herniated discs! BUT DONT WORRY ILL FIX YOU!! he stayed at the house for 8 days, and he worked on me 3 times during those 8days, 1st month i was walking already, couple of months later i was already playing soccer!! That was in 2012 its already been 7 almost 8yrs, and til this day i dont have any problems with my back

@@jeromejohnson122 I'm fine now after being fused at L5/S1 in June 2020. The L4/L5 disc then ruptured so that was done 1 week ago now for Microdiscectomy. I'm now in no pain at all not even surgical. My back actually feels stronger then before the fusion because I have stability there. My fusion surgery was 7.5hrs as I wore my disc away to nothing and the ruptured piece was wrapped around the nerves. I was in pain for 2-3 weeks. Nothing super painful. I was using 1 panadol forte and 1 paracetamol to take the edge off the pain. But all in all I'm pretty good with my fusion now. Don't worry. Do your research into your surgeon. I just managed to not think about the pain. I slept a lot and I walked every day little at a time. Walking stops the stiffness and pain a little. Ask about artificial disc replacement surgery at that level. It'll probably be more beneficial in keeping your spine healthier and moveable at the level and stop the adjacent discs from breaking down faster

I think I, like so many tend to complain about fusion so quickly after its done that we forgot our bodies need time to heal and adjust to our spine being stiffer. But gotta remember some people can have up to 8 levels fused and live normal lives after a big surgery. So if you have it take a few months to adjust and heal. Any pain you get can be your body still healing.
