Ellos, just wanted to point out that there is a lateral tract which conveys pain and temperature and an anterior tract that conveys crude touch, which do not then synapse onto the secondary sensory cortex. Thank you for the nice summary! :)

I feel like some important parts were left out. If the first order sensory neuron synapses on the second order sensory neuron in the nucleus proprius, it will ascend contralaterlly via the anterior spinothalamic tract. If the first order sensory neuron synapses on the second order sensory neuron in the substantia gelatinosa, it will ascend contralaterally via the lateral spinothalamic tract.

Thank you for your post! Projection to the thalamus: Neurons ascending via the spinothalamic tract synapse with 3rd order neurons in the following nuclei of the thalamus: Medial Dorsal (MD) (to the cingulate cortex), Ventral Posterior Lateral (VPL) (to the primary somatosensory cortex in the postcentral gyrus), and Ventral Posterior Medial (VPM) (to the insula).

Although great, I think you should be more detailed. Thalamus synapses include medial dorsal, ventral posterior lateral, and ventral medial posterior nuclei. Neocortical synapses include cingulate cortex, the primary somatosensory cortex, and insular cortex respectively. The lateral tract conveys pain and temperature while the anterior tract conveys crude touch.

Great video, but you mention that the Dorsal Column/Medial Lemniscus is not a 3 neurons pathway, but it is: sensory fibre from dorsal root (1st) synapse onto gracile or cuneate nuclei in the medulla; these (2nd neurons) go up to the VP of the thalamus and synapse on thalamic neurons (3rd) that go up to the cortex...Keep the good work up

For the non-English teaching environments the video can be cropped to produce ppt files for lecturing, or dubbed the narrations totally. Worldwide supports and other submitted topics hopefully will make health sciences educations even better and more efficient by making respective students study the topics easier.

@ around 2:50 mark -- Just want to clarify, as what I have learned from this video and from the previous one that Dorsal-medial lemniscus tract and the Spinothalamic tract both are 3 Neuron pathways: DML tract, 1. dorsal root ganglia 2. medulla oblongata (gracilis/cuneate nucleus) 3.thalamus; Spinothalamic tract, 1. dorsal root ganglia 2. dorsal horn of the spinal cord 3. thalamus.

Hi, thanks for the video - very informative and really helpful! Just wondered about lesions of the spinothalamic tract - am I correct in thinking that this would cause ipsilateral and contralateral damage depending on where the lesion is i.e. whether the 2nd neurone has decussated yet after ascending/descending?

The dorsal root ganglion is not a synapse. The pathway includes 2 synapses and thus 3 neurons are involved not 3 synapses as mentioned.

At 0:57, you say that it ascends or descends... I thought it was an ascending pathway? and wouldn't descend! Confused now... Do you just mean that it might ascend or descend Lissauer's Fasiculus before then decussating and then ASCENDING upwards to the thalamus? Why do some ascend and why do some descend before then ascending? Thank you for clearing up any confusion. Thank you for the hard work!
@MiraCheskis

by ascend and descend he means that some of them carry information that goes from the body to the CNS and these are ascending information carried by ascending tracts and they are sensory informations, the others which are termed descending are tracts which carry information from the CNS down to the body and these are usually motor...so the nomenclature of the tracts is based on the direction of the information they carry.hope that helps

not enough and too general , my teachers make it so detailed , that this is not enough and sufficient to pass .but thank , great job . PS: lateral and anterioir spinothalamic tracts ,the lateral vehiculate the pain & sensation and the anterior the pain and temperature , but they terminate in different nuclei in the thalamus , pain goes through the cm and dm and finally in the frontal cortex and the touch and thermal sensation in the VPL . ;) good luck for those who have exams like me

The substantial gelatinosa is the spinal trigeminsl nucleus and Lissauer's tract is the trigeminal tract and the dorsal horn is the trigeminal (medullary) dorsal horn all of which was readily acknowleged in earlier science until the they started pushing their fake vagal nerve stimulation hype so over time they eliminated the word "trigeminal" in the spinal column to keep you from finding out that CN V is not only the principal regulator of the sensory modalities of the head but also the body. Throw away all your books, studies and articles post 1990 and only ready the earlier versions pre 1990 to learn the truth. The earlier editions the better because the authors were on big pharma payroll to push the lies. I find the first editions dated in the 1960's the best. Ever since science was coopted by big money and big pharma it's garbage only to push false narratives like VNS to make $$$ Also, the spinothalamic tract and medial lemniscus are part of the trigeminal system. The trigeminal lemniscus is the head of the medial lemniscus. That's why they changed the name of trigeminal lemniscus to trigeminothalamic tract to keep you from connecting the tracts.
