This is absolutely amazing. Instead of showing the big picture like you just did, the lectures in my med school like to show a bunch of brainstem and spinal cord cross sections. I literally just now realized the dorsal column and the gracile/cuneate fasciculi are the same thing.

These are brilliant. It would be helpful if at the end of the tutorial the whole diagram is shown. I realise that during the drawing you need to zoom in, but seeing the complete diagram would be beneficial.

I always thought of this as trying to unlock your vibrating cell phone with your eyes closed. You need to know where your hand is (proprioception), you touch and feel your vibrating cell phone (touch and vibration), and you press to unlock it (pressure)

I think one thing needs to be pointed out is: the cuneate and gracile nucleus are at the dorsal tegmentum of the medulla while the medial lemnisci go anteriorly and decussate. In this tutorial, it looks like they go posteriorly (just my personal impression).

Honestly I think the pathways are sometimes hard to understand because the teachers don´t take time to explain pseudounipolar and unipolar neurons and so when they said a nucleus was a colection of neuron cell bodies, as was the dorsal root ganglion I was so confused!! You really made a gret job! Thank you so much!

Dorsal column= cuneate fasciculi + gracile fasciculi. A nucleus is a discrete collection of cell bodies in the CNS. DCML pathway is a 3 neuron pathway: 1st is in the dosal root ganglon 2nd is in the gracile and cuneate nucleas in medulla oblongata. 3rd is in the ventral posterolateral thalamus

Is this not just the pathway for tactile sensation? What about proprioception?
@renatoclark1977
@renatoclark1977 8 жыл бұрын
I'm not entirely sure what you're asking with regards to propiopception, but propiopception is you're ability to know where every single one of your limbs and body parts are positioned at any given time. so you're ability to know that your hand is behind your back when it is, is propiopception

However what is confusing is where the decussation is actually happening. Whether its in the medulla or pons after it acends contralaterally towards the cerebrum.

"ventral posterolateral" ... I know that's how it's called, but how did they name something ventral and at the same time posterial??
@skulqerX
@skulqerX 11 жыл бұрын
Hi ! The thalamus got lots of nuclei , which connect any tract below the brain towards the brain cortex, or vice versa. Shortly, thalamus is the gateway relay for all tracts going up or down ( except olfaction , anyway) So there's one nuclei that EXTENDS from the posterior to ventral to medial. So its like one big nuclei that takes 3 sides :D
@Gr33n1230
@Gr33n1230 11 жыл бұрын
yeah, I guess that makes sense.. that sure is one helluva nucleus! :D but the olfactory pathway isn't the only one that leaves the thalamus out, there's at least the pyramidal pathway, too.
