To all involved in putting this video together Thanks, I’ve been turning between centers now for 15 years, have made a handful of vessels but contract center work, never had formal training but have read a lot online and taught my self through mistakes, I really enjoy what KZbin has afforded me in visual instruction, though what I’ve learned at my lathe I always enjoy being confirmed by professionals like Jon, also the nuggets that I’ve not gleaned or thought of! I have to say I love this guy, one of the best tutorial presentations of the spindle gouge that I have seen and I have watched quite a few. Reminds of my shop teacher back in the 70s and now that I am in my 50s I have just gotten back into woodworking and woodturning. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge!

1:08 When I started wood turning the skew was the first tool I learned how to use. It can do everything but coves with a small radius and hollowing. Apart from that, it can do anything from roughing to finishing. That´s why it´s such an essential tool.

Moving foot to left, when cutting left was helpful..spent 3 hours learning making first bowl. I was not ready..found you helpful. I kept telling teacher..i am stuck..68 lady learning how..love turning..

Great video. I learned turning about 20 years ago from a hollow form turner. Spindle never came up. Then a friend needed some replacement balusters and asked if I could do them and I just jumped in. All that to say that I always just assumed you should change hands between left and right. I'll have to play with just using the right.

1 option you never mentioned is for a new turner to learn to turn ambidextrous.Which would be much easier when your a newbie.
