As a kid I thought this was the most futuristic ship, and even today it still looks awesome.

As I recall from the novel, the Spindrift had a "gear" that would incline the craft skyward and she would simply "fall upward" _silently_ from that position, assuming a suborbital trajectory.

What's more, it may have been intended have a launching pad similar to the Jupiter 2 since Irwin modeled this show on Lost In Space in the first place. (See the Land Of The Giants' 1967 Network Promotional Film for abc-TV.)

Irwin Allen didn't design the Spindrift, 20th Century Fox spfx department head L.B. Abbot built it, based upon designs by Paul Zastupnevich.

BTW: The ship was NOT equipped for 'hyper-space flight'... Hypersonic, yes, but the 'hyper-space' thing was a total accident, and how they got to the mysterious 'Giant's Planet' whose name & location were never disclosed.

I've got a model kit of this ship. I am presently fitting it with lights so that it will have a "production model" feel! Can't wait to finish it!

Actually, in one episode, the captain and the black dude were sent back in time. Where you saw the ship take off from a cradle. In one or more other episodes you did see the ship make short flights. In all cases, no landing gear was shown but, all landings were pretty much a hover and set landing.

As far as landing gear. It did not need any, it used a repulsion force under the bottom of the ship. Much like wheel-less trains use. It kept it above the ground till stopped and then was decreased till it went down to ground level.

WoW!!11 I've been to Seattle twice and enjoyed myself . I'd like to go back in four years for the opening of the Bruce Lee Museum. There also building a statue of in the city. This will truly be an extravaganza !!1

Loved the Land of the Giants show , but i feel i should clear up some misconceiptions about the show ,,, 1. The planet they landed on did not have giants 2. If it was then the gravity would have made it impossible for the little people to move,or they would have to be as strong as Superman to move. 3. The spacewarp would have to have shrunk them to about 2 inch height they keep getting the sizes mixed up in different shows mainly because of what oversized props were aviable. 4. Also strongly suspect the spacewarp was a one way tunnel , no going back that way.

It was never shown taking off or landing from any airport in the series, nor in flight besides "The Crash", so it may indeed have landing gear which we never saw, as the Spindrift was grounded for the duration of the series. I'm sure if the Spindrift was filmed landing back on Earth, there would have been some kind of landing gear, but alas abc-tv cancelled the show before they escaped the L.O.T.G.

@RepublibotThreePoint I can guess the model and prop fabricator and designer just did a variation on the idea. I'd like to know the name of the guy behind television props from Irwin Allen shows,Voyage of the bottom of the sea,Lost in Space,Land of the Giants.

I have every episode on DVD and I never recall it leaving the ground after it crashed in episode one,except for two episodes where giants found it and carried it,the time travel episode only reused the initial flight scene entering the spacewarp,so if you have these scenes feel free to put them on youtube as I'd luv to see them.

The only time it ever moved under its own power after the crash was when Dan pretty much drove it out of a quicksand pit.

This isn't a 'UFO' ('Alien craft'), it's one of 'Ours' - The "SPINDRIFT", a futuristic, sub-orbital passenger transport that encountered a strange 'Space-warp' en-route & stranded our Heroes on a planet where the inhabitants are 12-times our size! That's the premise that set up the series for its' two-year run.

Obviously too young to remember "Land of the Giants", a TV series on ABC, circa 1969-1970, created by Irwin Allen ("Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea", "Lost in Space", "Time Tunnel", "Poseidon Adventure", "The Towering Inferno", et al...).

I'm not entirely sure why sigzor85 is upset with me, but then again I don't care. As a Christian, I feel compeled to forgive him... :-) And actually I'm told I'm very knowledgeable and that I'm generaly a nice guy(I often tell ladies that I'm a Christian but I'm not totally harmless... ;-) ) ONWARD to more pertanant(spelling?) subjects: Would love to see a movie about this show, with a slightly elongated & sleeker version of the Spindrift. With same basic features of the ship, w/ landing gear!

CaptainGrimsdale it was supposed to be a high altitude aircraft for faster travel like one of those hypersonic planes

It was a sub-orbital space craft. It was built to go into space, but not interplanetary travel.
