I must say, I’ve never seen any of the films in the Samurai trilogy. However those are films I’ve been curious about watching. I may get those and if I do, I’ll be able to comment more. But from the description about the films as well as some of the stuff you say about the film, I believe I’d enjoy this film and most likely the other films in the trilogy quite a bit at the very least. I’ll defiantly look into getting this set. Thank you for another great video Daisuke.

Oh gosh, I think you would really love these films, Jared. This is such a great and well-paced set of films, and so easy to get into. I would love to hear your thoughts on them if and when you get a chance! Take care.

Daisuke Beppu Thank you Daisuke. I’m narrowing in on getting this set and The Seven Samurai as some of the films to get with the B&N. And I shall give my thoughts when I watch them.

Hello Daisuke, this is Philip. I enjoyed your discussion of this film - my favourite of the trilogy is the second, perhaps because I am already very familiar with the Musashi legend, and know the beginning and the end well but not so much the middle, but also because I enjoy the spiritual journey aspect of the second film a little more, with Musashi doing his musha shugyo, carving statues of bosatsu at each place he stays, almost like Enku. You mention the episodic nature of this film and I wonder if that's not because it is adapted from Eiji Yoshikawa's version of Musashi, which was originally serialized in a newspaper in Japan, with cliffhangers at the end of each installment to keep the reader engaged? Also, do the women whom Takezo and Matahachi meet remind you of the women in Onibaba - the way they eke out a living by taking and selling the armor from the soldiers who die on the battlefield. Is it an old Japanese legend? Or was one writer/director influenced by the other? Or just a coincidence?

Dear Barmecide 88, what a wonderful comment you make. Thank you for this excellent contribution. So, yes, you are so right to point out to the source material and the serial nature. This is such a great observation, and perhaps my point was not well made but I think this serial nature of the film trilogy is one of its great strengths because it is makes it so easy to watch and so pleasant and so easy to get caught up with. It makes one want to watch more and more, which makes the film such a joy to watch and I would say something that is "easy" to watch for someone who is new to these kinds of films. And, it adds a great sense of melodrama to the whole project, which makes it such a joy to watch. As for your comparison with Onibaba, wow. What a brilliant observation! I would also add the characters of the villagers in SEVEN SAMURAI (who hoard the armor of dead samurai) and also certain characters in the story RASHOMON (the Akutagawa story) and the film RASHOMON (the Kurosawa-directed film). But I think your comparison is more apt. Brilliant.

I think I had this in VHS. The guy in the shop where i ordered these three VHS really had a strange look at me, as if questioning my seriousness. Will never find out why. Those are decent movies. Although the second part has a weird green tint. It was all 25 years ago. Guess I am getting old.

I haven't seen this, I'm sure I would like these, I love samurai films especially with Mifune, and fortunately there's a region b Criterion release of this. By the way, I'm happy to report that I saw the new Suspiria today and I really liked it. I went in with very low expectations, and was afraid of the really long runtime, but it didn't have any pacing issues. Like the original, the new Suspiria has amazing cinematography, but in a totally different way, this doesn't have the crazy colors, but it has very interesting camera angles. It has some crazy scenes and it builds suspense up in a wonderful way. It was really different from Argento's film, I think if someone hadn't seen the original Suspiria in a long time and watched this without knowing the name of the film, they wouldn't guess that this is a remake of Argento's masterpiece. I'm almost certain that you'll like it too. Lastly, it really reminded of Zulawski's Possession, which I know that both of us are very fond of. I don't think it is as good as Argento's Suspiria, but that's nothing to be ashamed of, and now it's my favorite movie of the year so far, but have to admit I haven't been blown away by any new film this year. Have a great week!

And, I would love to hear your thoughts about the Samurai Trilogy if and when you get a chance to see the films. I think you will enjoy them. And I am happy that there is a Region B version!!

Thank you very much for the comment. So these are large I get that. But they are worn as an homage to the late and great filmmaker George Romero, who wore glasses similar to these in interviews and the like. I don’t claim to be anywhere to the level of him of course, but I wear them here in the spirit of cinema. Cheers and I hope you are well and please have a nice rest of your week and weekend.
