I LOVE Jean Cocteau's films! His techniques and tricks for visual effects are amazing and I'm really into their outcome and the practicality of it. There's a hallway scene in Blood of A Poet that stands out in my mind so much when I think of the way he uses the camera and the set. I also like that he uses the same motifs in his films. (Maybe motifs isn't the right word.) Often mirrors are incorporated in his films and usually they are some sort of doorway or portal. He doesn't use actual statues, he uses people as statues even if they are part of the fireplace. It seems he uses a limited set, too. Like his films never venture too far from the main setting of a house and another place. I'm being vague because I'm thinking about multiple films of his. La Belle Et La Bete in particular has such a lavish look to it in my opinion. The costumes and the props have a dark Baroque style to them. And I think Jean Marais having the beast makeup and pieces on him add to that. I wrote this comment out before I finished the video and it seems you feel similarly! :)

Thank you! "Magical" is a great word for describing La Belle Et La Bete. Something else I like about this film is that since most people are familiar with the story it's a good sort of transitional film to show people who might be interested in watching more classic and/or foreign language films. Especially if they don't know where to start or how to approach watching such a wide range of cinema.

I really enjoyed this film I was not sure if I would be able to separate my love for the Disney film.I was pleasantly surprised with how great the practical effects we’re.Beast voice was jarring at first but I soon got use to it.Great review as usual Daisuke.

Beautiful film, daisuke, simple but effective effects, the most poetic and visually appealing version of the story. I only have the bfi bluray release with the always excellent sir Christopher frayling, who , of course, does wonderful commentaries for leone films. I think I prefer orphee, which I do have on criterion bluray but it’s close. Excellent review.

So far this is the only film in the Collection that both me and my wife absolutely loved, we usually have very different tastes in cinema. Also Daisuke what's your take on the Philip Glass opera version? Personally I really enjoyed it and I was very surprised that all the lines were actually sung in sync with movie. I imagined it was just going to be an opera with the film playing along as background.

And, I am regretting not mentioning it in more detail in my video, but I really, REALLY adore the Philip Glass piece. It is stunning and as you so rightly point out, technically speaking a masterwork. I am a big admirer of the works of Philip Glass.

A fantastic film. I find it very rude of Disney not to credit Cocteau in any of there versions when so much of the Disney films clearly comes from Cocteau's film and not the original story.

That's an extraordinary claim, since Cocteau's version is quite faithful to the original story by Mme. Leprince de Beaumont. There are a few exceptions: Cocteau added the character of Avenant, and the ending where the Beast exchanges bodies with Avenant. (Neither of which was used by Disney, unless you equate Gaston with Avenant. ) In fact, Disney's ending is much closer to the original story than Cocteau's. There are many important plot points in Disney's version that are in neither Cocteau or Leprince de Beaumont. Can you site specific examples where Disney's version was based on material that was created by Cocteau's and not Leprince de Beaumont's? Thanks.

I am not sure exactly as to the history behind the making of the Disney film (the animation film) and so I can't comment about Disney's approach to the material. I will say, however, that they do feel to me to be distinct films and there is also discussions to be made about how each film treats the original story (a point which my dear friend darwinia55 very rightly alludes to). But, that being said, I think it is not at all off the mark to see some similarities between the two film versions.

@@darwinia55 I have'nt read the original story in forever but is'nt the whole living furniture and castle something Cocteau came up with? I think it's even mentioned in one of the commentaries.

On second thought it might have been in the Criterioncast episode about the movie where they mentioned it being a Cocteau thing.

In the original story, all of the servants are invisible, much as they are in Cocteau's, except for occasional glimpses of hands (as decanters and candelabras.) Disney takes that one step further by creating anthropomorphic characters. So Cocteau hinted at it, and Disney carried it to the extreme.

I prefer greatly the Cocteau movie than the Walt Disney one . Disney has made a very efficient cartoon but in a very american way ( or Disney way) ...It lack charm or poesie.

Yes, I see your point about the Disney animation film. I suppose however that for me the film is delightful especially now because it is one of my daughter's favorite films and I have been influenced by her.
