Oh Cat, how I wish you had been my instructor when, last year, I joined the local Y to take spin classes for the very first time. As you eluded, the instructor was more concerned with providing a challenging class for the regulars but failed to provide us newbies with the most basic of information so that we could at the very least be comfortable and set up properly. I, however, would not be defeated by the class and managed to keep going for four more classes until the pain and discomfort did me in, After watching your video, I realize now that If the instructor had just been as knowledgeable as you, I'd still be spinning today! And because of you, I've decided to give it another chance., So thank you for your awesome video for beginner cyclists. Now I know what to do when my toes start going numb, my arms and back start aching and how to adjust the darn bike from all angles.Thank YOU! :-)

Great job with the intro information!! As a MTB rider with winter on the way I bought a decent spin bike and have created my “spin zone” in my basement. Getting the set up right and making I’m in proper position is like the set up of a MTB, comfort is number one, pain makes me stop. I am challenging myself to spinning One hour a day for December. I ride MTB like 4 or 5 days per week so the discipline and seat time has already set in. The biggest challenge seems to be the mental part of keeping focused, and want to spin for an hour. My i pad and you tube are needed. Good time to study my other winter activity, wood sculpting while I spin!!!

On the pedal speed... once you build up more power and agility and get you'll be able to go faster too. Be patient, it'll happen, but remember that you must ride with gear on. When you see people and they're flying look to see if they look in control. If they look bouncy at all they're not in control and riding without resistance on. That is NOT advised. Can actually hurt the knees and hips, plus you're literally spinning your wheels. Hope that helps!

Pearl Iszumi X-Roads. I love them. I like the kind that lace up, but have one velcro strap to tighten them up. Just get a mountain biking shoe so the cleat is inset and they have a little flex. You'll love the ride!

Congrats on your first class! Um... yeah, that first ride can feel a little painful. Ha. Your "area" just isn't used to the weight there. It goes away though I promise or none of us would come back. You'll usually feel nothing after a few times so be encouraged. With that said, you shouldn't feel like you're sliding forward off the front of the seat. What that means is the seat angle needs adjusted. Front of the seat should be slightly higher than the back so have your trainer check that out.

OWY! That's common for the first couple of rides, but it usually goes away after that. Otherwise we'd never come back & there are millions of Spinners throughout the world! I think it's key that you go consistently to get your body used to the pressure. That's what it is really. Pressure you're not used to. The body should figure out it's OK and not hurt AT all anymore. Watch the the vlog that goes out this Saturday on how to sit on the bike and body position. It may help you! Don't give up!

Quite an informative video. Explaining how to set up Spin Bike. Foot, Knee, Ankle & Back positions explained with the emphasis on doing things safely and reducing risk of injury. I've used a more basic exercise cycle for a couple of years and used increasing wattage and distance to help lose weight. I've been looking at a Nordic Track GX 8.0 to continue with my exercise regime. I've always wondered about how to utilise the resistance on spin bikes that don't have specific digital readings to use. It's good that you can increase the difficulty gradually whilst you get used to the workouts and increase your fitness levels. I feel less concerned now about my purchase with the helpful information provided.

When you're standing your hands should be towards the end of the handlebars and your hips should be over the top of the front of the seat. Your body is in a "V" position where the hips are the point of the "V". If you are asked to drop back further to hit the glutes and hamstrings more don't lean forward, just hinge at the hip joint to extend your hips so they are more over the center or back of the seat.

Hi there! In my opinion... High cadence itself isn't bad, what's bad is riding without resistance. I call it riding in the sky. You should always feel in control of the bike, never like the bike is on control of you. I mean if it starts to hurt, stop of course, but so long as you're not riding in the sky you should be good to go!!! Love to see you in San Diego some day! ~Cat

Grace Zachary - On your question. I totally get it, BUT you'll find most often after about 3 rides (especially if you get them in in one week) that feeling goes away. Other wise we sure wouldn't keep coming back! Your body adjusts to the pressure there. That's really all it is. You can use a seat pad, but it's really not necessary, because the feeling you're describing is normal and goes away for 99% of Spinners out there! Phew.

+Studio SWEAT onDemand I'm 3 days in and I'm hooked. Had an issue at first with how I stand on the bike (as I'm pretty tall) but now I think I got it. Just waiting for payday for shoes. I DEFINITELY suggest that to everyone. The straps on a bike can be worn but the buckles on the bike that click into the shoes seems to ALWAYS work. So note to everyone. Not cross trainers or basics sneakers but cycling shoes are a must for a perfect session. Can you use regular sneaks? Sure. But you WILL notice a difference. Thanks again!

That's normal. Your body isn't used to the pressure 'there'. Usually that will go away after you've done a few classes. Otherwise, no one would ever go back! If it continues much longer maybe the place you're spinning has really hard seats and you should get a gel seat cover to take with you. Just make sure you wash it after each use. PS- Never round that back. Proud chest. shoulder blades back and down. You can let the shoulders themselves roll forward a bit to relax the back though.

Hi Jesus- Where are you from? Spinning burns a ton of fat. Belly fat... well, we can't tell fat where to burn off, our body just burns it off where it wants & that changes all the time. If that's where you have the most fat, my guess is you'll see it go from there the fastest. A trainer that tells you they can target train where fat burns off is not being honest with you. Can tone up under fat with resistance training. YES, we sooo hit the upper body. Try SSOD's SpinSculpt. It is THE best!

Class 1 done! Give yourself 1 more day to heal, then dive back in. You may have been all push, no pull or been leaning forward too much. Hard to say, but for sure you're waking up some muscles that haven't been worked in a while from the sounds of it! Try to focus more on the pull back & up (not just up) w/ the hamy. Push w/ the quad is gonna happen naturally. Stretch all the leg, hip, back & chest muscles after class. Take the best classes by going to StudioSWEATonDemand . com now!
