Spirit of Gaia 30th Birthday

This is precious to me. We built and sailed a Tiki in 1969-70. In that year we went from San Diego to Panama. I was fresh out of the Navy and crazy with anti war fervor and lusting for adventure. Those two emotions gradually gave way to appreciation of the sea and of this most basic and seaworthy of boat designs. In Panama I began a career as a commercial fisherman and eventually becoming a merchant marine officer. On this lovely and simple boat I began many of my life’s trajectories. I studied Spanish, boatbuilding, sewing seine net, celestial navigation, self sufficiency and yes, life itself. Thank you James Wharram. Thank you for my life as it is now. You got me started towards net zero, which is where I am today in terms of energy on my own simple boat, not a Wharram, but incorporating so much of what began 50-some years ago.
