This video was such a find. James Wharram stayed at our house in Deganwy whilst he built this boat. I was a child then but remember frequent visits to Deganwy docks and watching her being built. Until now those times were just distant memories, this video brought it all back to life xx

Just found your channel today. Hope you post more videos. Craaaazy to see what your doing in your boat. Really inspiring! I actually used to live on my sailboat just across the water from the boatyard you are/were working in. Good luck with the refit... lots of lovely knowledgable locals around if you need helping hands. :)

In 1962, aged 18 I had a short but exciting sail with James Wharram. I was an experienced and competitive dinghy sailor attending a national championship. Races were cancelled for the day on account of a 30+ knot wind. I was checking at the race centre for any update when this guy wandered in and asked if there was an experienced sailor to help him get his little cat from the beach at Llandudno round to Deganwy. I’d never sailed a cat before so I volunteered. So I introduced myself and with the assistance of about half a dozen people we manhandled this little 18 - 20 ft cat down the beach and set off. We made slow progress trying to round Great Orme (a huge headland) with the promise of being able to slightly ease sheets once we were round for a fetch down to Deganwy. However, once we reached open water we found a lot more wind and James decided that we should head back. At this stage I was totally unimpressed by my first catamaran experience: our progress had been painfully slow, upwind, and she lacked the “feel” of the dinghies I was used to. But the second we headed back that little cat took off like a scalded cat and steered like she was on rails. We got back to the beach where a dozen people helped us pull her up right above the high water mark, we shook hands and I never saw him again. It was only several years later that I learned of Wharram cats, read his book and realised that JW and the James I sailed with were one and the same. Later, I moved to NZ and when I moved North from Wellington was able to buy a beautiful Pahi 31. Park her on a Beach and when the water at the bow was almost up to your knees you could single-handedly shove her off again, yet I was totally confident that under bare poles she would ride out pretty much anything. Nowadays, I’m reminded of my brief encounter with James, whenever I see one of his (or Hanneka’s) designs. ETA. You are a remarkable young woman. Please continue making videos. I will be looking out for them. Arohanui.

@@dobryden22 I’m in Hokianga.😉 Had my cat “Imagine” on a mooring at Opua back in the nineties. Cruised her between Whangaroa to the Barrier fro two seasons. Family illness forced me to quit sailing in 93 and I had neither the time nor the money to get another boat until about 2008, when I bought a Shoalcraft, “Tanuki”. Gave up in 2014 when I could no longer manage her by myself. Just a keyboard sailor, these days.

Two great films. Don't change a thing with your style in life or film production. You are the real deal and in the finest traditions of women on Wharram cats. I am a solo sailor and you're absolutely right about not being able to put into words what it's like to arrive from a voyage when you feel so totally at one with the boat and sea and wind. It makes you emotional and it is so lovely to see that because its a real thing. Full respect.

Might not even get a chance to sail her again -- at least not without some help on board. But, I've got me a little 25-foot Westerly Centaur hidden away here on the farm and I'll get her fixed up an' goin' again soon. I'll probably even mount a couple of the old schooner's swivel guns on her to keep away the riff-raff of the kind of places I like to visit. If yer anywhere on the East Coast, I'll gives ye a ride if yer near Baltimore. An' I'll gives ye a cutlass to keep the youngsters from gettin' too out of line wi' a couple of agedly gentrified man.

In an introduction Kellsall described Wharram as a "world-girdling girl wordler'.

Thank you! This was so good to watch, even better to have done. I wish I hadn't developed terrible seasickness over the years, plus a massive fear of deep water and heavy seas. I've only done it a couple of times, but I loved sitting out there on that black ocean watching the clouds, the heading, the windspeed, the spume on the swell, the occasional albatross, and feeling the excitement of heading out of port and reaching a new one.

A seamless merging of then and now, perhaps a solar panel to show little change in all that time. Very good, thank you.

@@kianaweltzien4469 I saw JW and Hanneke at the London boat show. James in his shorts and wellingtons pacing about and Hanneke engaging with the public. I took a brochure but never did build one. They weren't just selling the boat but a whole philosophy and lifestyle. I live in Wales and can't be that far from where they built that boat. Please keep posting.
