Took me until now to realize this, but I actually had a small crush on Rain when I was a kid. My guess is I really liked how tough she was, she didn't take any crap, and she had a good head on her shoulders. She also had this kind of playful sassy attitude which I find adorable.

Rain is my very favorite character in Spirit. I have a model horse of her and Spirit by Breyer. Thanks for making this! I adore her character! She's beautiful and reminds me of my own horse. Never noticed the transitions as much until you said something. Rain also reminds me of Sally from Cars. Both hesitant love interests that show their men their world in order to get them to change. They both have a sassy side eye scene too. And have a tearful goodbye with their lovers. My mind is racing. Rain is underrated

Regarding the intended audience comment, I should say that one of the original concepts for the story was considerably darker (it involved Spirit dying in the end after escaping and being recaptured multiple times) and was changed so it would fit a more general audience. Another change was that Spirit was originally going to fight another stallion (switched to the cougar) which was cut I _think_ because the directors wanted a more feel-good type movie [take that one with a grain of salt, the only source I can find is this comment kzbin.info/www/bejne/imGkeIp8d5qai5Y&lc=UgxkpUsUP0_uGAiPwcB4AaABAg ]. Or the cougar scene just fit better and I personally think it does. I wouldn't say that changes much about your comment, but that being said I think that Spirit is genuinely a really good all-ages type movie. It's able to be mature without crossing into overly how do I say this.. excessive? territory. For me one of the best examples of the really good merging with the 3d/2d elements are the ending segments of the This Is Where I Belong and I Will Always Return scenes, since Spirit's (and by extension Rain's) animation transitions absolutely SEAMLESSLY from 3D to 2D on the hill. It blew my mind when I first realised that watching a behind-the-scenes video. (Also, aside from Spirit being the protagonist of the film, James freakin' Baxter was his supervising animator so I mean of course it's going to be good lol) kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZ3amZJ3maxogZI for some of the deleted scenes from Spirit and www.animationsource.org/spirit/en/custom/&id_film=16&nump=9438 for the actual source material for that video.

I didnt notice the cg vs animation mainly probably for two reasons, one, yes they did a good job with the transitions to make them less noticable and they also used it sparingly and two, my distance eye sight is pretty not great so watching it on my tv as a kid or even on my laptop, I just never really noticed that degrade in quality before until you mentioned it. This movie was like my religion as a kid lol I remember it so so fondly and brian adams as vocals paired with hans zimmer conducting the soundtrack, pure pure magic

EDIT: that movie about the bear and mouse is called Ernest and Celstine! At this point, studios like Disney and Dreamworks make movies with the thought, “Hey this would make a great toy line/series”.That why Dreamworks decided to revive the Spirit story and focus on the audience of little girls…which is overrated obviously (already there’s Horseland, Saddleclub, Free Rein etc. either that or the majority of horse movies are always with a girl connecting with a horse during a crisis/hardship in her life). Even though 2D animation is dead in the U.S, it’s not in Europe. At least studios like Cartoon Saloon is keeping up with the traditional animation. I think it’s safe to say that if one wanted to do 2D animation, Europe would be the place to go (and this is not referring to commercials or that like but actual 2D animated movies). There’s April and the Extraordinary World, and there was this other film I believe based on a book series about a mouse making friends with a bear (the focus is on like mouse and bear societies and there separation between them. Being a kids film, it had quite a deep message). Unfortunately I can’t recall the title 🤔 but the animation is absolutely beautiful.

This movie was made for General Audience (meaning anybody can watch it) and back then animation had more freedom of what they could get away with many cartoons and animated movies showed blood, gun shots, death, monsters, characters being stabbed, actual conflict. Many animated movies don't always have child characters in them that doesnt mean kids can't watch them. Today's generation is dumbing everything down to the point where people are going to become more sensitive to the things that were once normal seeing on tv. I also disagree to say this movie wasn't for girls (not exclusively at least) let's not forget Little Mermaid showed blood spilling out of Ursula after she got stabbed same for Maleficent after she turned into a dragon, Pinnochio had children turn into Donkeys (the original movie was hardcore), Scooby Doo use to have real monsters (I don't mean just the movies it always had real supernatural and dark moments if you know where to look for it).

I'm the only one wh at least didn't like when Rain was mad at Spirit, even though it was because Spirit was aggressive towards Little Creek? It was hard for Spirit to trust humans at first especially for how Colonel and his army treated him.

I kinda disagree with the point about how it wasn’t made for little girls, I’m not saying that it exclusively was, but as a girl who grew up with this film, obsessed with horses, this was by far by far my favourite, over any other horse media. I preferred the realism, and lack of dialogue and heavy story from sacha young age, and I know many others felt the same. I think kids now are losing their ability to immerse into more realistic, grown up or thoughtful animations and stories due to a decrease in attention span and awareness from how dumbed down everything is for kids now, and the technology epidemic. I think they’re losing imagination. So if this film was released now/after 2015, I don’t think it would’ve been appreciated at all. Kids just aren’t the same anymore. Everything is so dumbed down for them
@CompleteAnimation2 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's a lack of ability for kids to handle more mature themes. I think it's a lack of ambition from studios.

@@Whocares158 Little Mermaid had blood spilling out of Ursula after she got stabbed same for Sleeping Beauty with Maleficent's dragon. Many animated movies and cartoons were able to get away with more then today and that's probably because of today's generation trying to sugar coat everything and dumbing it down.
