Great perspective, I even think it's unfair to consider that the boyar only "keeps pace" with paladin after having compared it to the best paladins in the game. Having a cavalry unit able to 1v1 a Frank or Teuton paladin for basically the same price already sounds like a more than ok option to me, even with the lesser raiding potential taken into account.
@MrMorvana3 жыл бұрын
On paper, yes. In practice, the need for castles makes it a mediocre choice. To be able to use them as your main gold unit, you need to be able to build a lot of castles, which can already be tricky (and not enough if your enemy is able to use a lot more stables), but can even be a death sentence if at one time you are pushed back and some of your castles are destroyed. You can build 10 stables in a few minutes, but you will already have invested all your stone in castles, so you will permanently be weakened. It's a HUGE weakness well known of the Mongol players, who at least have one of the most OP units to compensate for this problem, which isn't the case of the boyard. But at least, the boyard has a very good place in castle age.
@artsenor2543 жыл бұрын

The cost is less and that time window is MASSIVE ! An important thing for the boyard, it's a good unit in castle age, even without any upgrade. If you aren't going against archers, it's almost the same as an upgraded knight... So if you go for something else than a cav build and you still need a good knight (to help to defend against knight raids for example), you can just build a few of them in your defensive castle and have something effective without any further investment.

I think the problem with Boyars and other UUs that use food is how the game usually plays out. When you drop a castle, usually, the opponent will also drop his own castle to stop you from dropping a castle one after another. Then, both of you are going to save food and gold to advance to Imperial to get trebs to destroy each others castles and trebs. If you make Boyars, you're going to advance later. You might raid a bit and kill some of his units, but if he gets trebs earlier than you, you're going to lose your castle and maybe the game.

I will say though that the boyars are a pretty decent complement to the Slavic infantry and siege army. Their slower movement speed makes it easier for infantry and siege to keep up, and their sturdiness makes for a good frontline damage sponge. The fact that Slavs don't have paladins pretty much mean that elite boyars are the Slavs' best shot at having competent cavalry for their armies.

Boyars are top tier in team games, as it isnt a Boyar vs Paladin choice for the Slav player, its Boyar vs Cavalier. In castle age they dont work out nearly as well as SotL makes them, since you need to invest villager time into mining stone and then building a castle, so even though their creation time is half of a knights, a standard 2v2 meta of scouts->knights means that you already have the stables and can create from the second you are in castle age. Boyars biggest strength would be in early imp in a team game, when the slav player could have 1-2 castles up, since the upgrade to elite takes only 60 seconds; Compare that to the 100 seconds of cavalier and 170 seconds of paladin before you get a unit that can match the elite boyar gives the Slav player and his team a huge powerspike. Couple that with trade meaning that the higher gold cost being negligible in team games makes boyars the go to pick for slavs in imperial during team games

The elite Boyar being roughly a paladin makes them a deadly force in early imperial where halb, heavy camel and arbilest... ect may not yet be researched. Getting to imp first in a 1v1 by even a few seconds could be the difference between getting trampled or not. If you already have boyars when imp finishes and you can get elite out of the gate, do it. If you catch a castle age army napping its curtains for them.
@drakZes3 жыл бұрын
I think they need to balance a lot of units so that they get picked more often. For instance they can give boyars hidden armor against their counters so that the counters only do liek 3/4 of the bonus damage and maybe +1 pierce armor to make them a littel bit more viable on post imperial age.

Late castle into imperial age: As Slav in competitive team games, against enemy knights, Druzhina Halberdiers with siege would be preferable to knights/boyars with siege. Gold resources are limited and a major consideration will be to preserve your gold units and whittle down enemy gold units. For flexibility, cavaliers would be a better option and those stables can easily switch into hussar production once gold runs out, and they will run out eventually. Now, for a power play where you can boom and happily afford three castles with an untouched economy, and want to team up with an archer ally, boyars are the way to go as they can go toe to toe in an ultimate composition with enemy paladins and even elite battle elephants..though elite battle elephants will have a slight edge.

for anyone watcxhing this video now: boyar now cost 60f 70g and elite boyars got 2 more melee armor. The increased armor makes them quite a bit better against paladins and champions

Hey Spirit, not sure how familiar you are with the scenario and map editor but would you consider doing a tutorial series on how to use the editor tools?

I'm pretty sure that the Teuton Paladin matchup is actually a 50/50 depending on who gets the first hit - either the Paladin does and survives with 4 HP or the Boyar does and lives with 6.

i feel the Boyar should have an Aoe ability that makes ally units either attack harder or faster, this would mean having a few boyars together with your infantry and siege units would bring a huge buff to them. Since technically the Boyars were the Rus Nobility, so its not like they were entire regiments of them. In fact Boyars were mostly either commanders or elite small regiments.

Will you ever redo your civ videos? With all the constant balance changes since DE, they’re sort of outdated
@viktorf67983 жыл бұрын
Great video, u said boyars are not cost effective against halbadiers. But they won the fight which paladin didnt do. So it gives boyars an sig intuitive edge, when the opponent prepare he might underestimate how many halbs he needs. And if you win that first fight you can capitalize on numbers advantage. Gold unit vs non gold unit should only matter when gold i scarce right? If you lose with 8000 gold you did something wrong 😑

Could you please do a video comparing going swordsmen vs knight lines? I know it is not a very common choice, but depending how gold and food are valued, swordsmen can be more cost-efficient? Of course that does not capture raiding and countering archers or siege.

SOTL - There's an error in your video at 8:48 - You say that the higher HP of the paladin allows them to take more arbalest shots, yet your on-screen text tells me they both take 50 shots each.

So it sounds like the Boyars are somewhat better overall than the Knights, but you also have to consider the initial upfront cost of building a castle. So maybe it's a case of going for Knights in castle age and then transitioning into Boyars later on? Situational dependent of course...
@giudalberto3 жыл бұрын
Did you consider the cost of the upgrade to paladin? Because Boyars only have 1 upgrade to make in order to reach full capacity (except for the blacksmith one) don't you find?
