TEDx Talks

9 жыл бұрын

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. What is the limit of science and how does spirituality relate to it?
Jay Lakhani, a theoretical physicist, offers an overview of Spiritual Humanism which he describes as the meeting point between the two areas.
Jay Lakhani is qualified as a theoretical physicist specialising in Quantum Mechanics. He spends his retirement exploring the links between cutting edge discoveries of modern physics with esoteric teachings of Hinduism. He is the first Hindu tutor appointed at Eton College.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

@@dayanadamdevendran1195 are you out of your mind or what? At his time swami vivekananda was highly appreciated in world parliaments, and all his lectures created tsunamis in the west , yeah you can say in India he was and still is underappreaciated but overall swami vivekananda was a spiritual giant of his time

Spiritual Humanism is a concept of Sanatan Dharm(ancient Hinduism). Mr. Lakhani illustrated it with science. There could be no better explanation than that. I deeply thank him for spreading the message that ancient Veds(or Vedas) gave and Hindu saints preached. I request people on KZbin NOT to take this video and my comment as communal or provocative. You can comment your doubts, I would appreciate it and try to answer with what knowledge I have.

One of the best TED talks. Physics says "whole universe is nothing but vibrations at different scales". Now the question is what is it "Vibrating"?. Science remained silent. Spirituality says " Consciousness it self is vibrating to create a grand illusion of physicality". It took me more than 10 years of research to realise this simple fact.

The best articulation I have ever heard. Leaves us with the need to seek and experience the nature of reality for ourselves. The realisation and answers all lie within us and around us. We just need to relax and access it. But be rest assured the experience will just be a glimpse of the truth beyond the physical universe but only the surface of it...To go deeper will depend on your capacity to unlearn everything you know. The final realisation point will probably make you a part of the existing spiritual fabric where your physical presence is irrelevant. But even if you do scratch the surface of it all and come back do not try to articulate your experience. That would be injustice to the experience itself. That is only for you to soak into and not make logical sense of it. We are all aware of this in one way or the other but we are too glued to the physical reality and the knowledge we possess. We are different when it comes to being matter but are all part of the same spiritual chaos.... dust, dirt, living non living...everything. We do not exist and yet we do. The atman and the brahman...a spiritual play unfolded.

Either this wasn't a serious comment or you had an Abrahamic upbringing. As per Sanatana Dharma, he didn't go nowhere. He'll be reborn again and again until he has completed all of his 'Prarabdha Karma'. Once he does, he doesn't 'reach god', but becomes one with Brahman (Brahman ≠ God). As per Advaita philosophy, he is then said to have attained Moksha. HAGD

The talk made me realize I was always a spiritual humanist - because I felt totally unconstipated (20:40) even when I was inside religion (because I was born into it) and feel equally unconstipated now that I am free from it! 😁 While I totally agree with almost all of what he says, the only risk that we face, based on Jay's definition of our spiritual 'underpinning', is that religion has a stronger grip of culture and legacy on the 'transcendental' that allows superstition and woo-woo to corrupt true understanding. I feel it is important to unlearn or unmoor ourselves from religious constructs and approach the metaphysical from a scientific, unbiased angle rather than spread the word that science is limited/incomplete and therefore not desirable while the original spiritualists (founders of religions) are correct by taking the shortcut to true realization. I know this is a tougher pill to swallow because means we take a stand against the inertia of time and crowds, but it is basically taking the reductionist path of the Russian doll until we get to the non-material rather than the concept of worshiping the super-personality who claims to have got to the last doll. Actually, based on this concept of super-personality (5:40) or 'ubermensch' (Nietzsche's super-man), humans give up on 'perfection' and religious people use this non'uber'ness to justify small-mindedness, laziness, selfishness and this ridiculous subservience to those that claim to know the mind of this ubermensch. I recognize I'm more of a cynic in claiming that the average human is lazy and will take the easy route into blind-faith... vs Jay Lakhani who, I guess, has more of an optimistic view of people!

The one question which is tickling me is that ,why the non-physical thing , say Aether, I think it somehow linked with the Tesla's concept , responsible for presence of life , the life we see ,{( may be there are other forms of life too }) or the consciousness , needed a physical structure , our body to be present . I mean where and how and why forms took place ? Why the one consciousness needes so mich physical forms to menifest if it is a one thing ?

hello chand..quantum physics says the origin of universe started from a big bang..a big bang that happened in a singularity,right? And physics can follow only after the plancks time..between the actual time of big bang and the plancks time, there is no physics,ok..now coming back to your question why consciuousness takes the infinite various forms is something mysterious,beyond our scope of understanding, but the moment you stop questioning and start a quest unto yourself..then, you are after your question..wish all the best,chand

Reconciling faith with logic has been our work in progress for centuries,but now more than ever. If being fully human includes the evolutionary predisposition of a need for faith,where do we go in this crisis of modernity and materialism? On the other side,those in denial of logic,who embrace falsehoods for the sake of faith,are worshipping an inherently flawed concept of divinity that they hold in their mind. It's as if there's one last idol to be smashed. Satisfying our need for both faith and logic,not just reconciling them,is the central issue of our age. The extremists on either side have both been found wanting to the great mass of humanity,and that need won't be denied. Spiritual Humanism is as good a phrase as can be found to sum up our presently ongoing quest for meaning.

Lakhani sir the energy or spiritual alignment you always talk about it's just fascinating, me being and agnostic hindu always seek your guidance for further enlightenment Hindus are misguided in form of culture tradition rituals all put together sanantan the eternal truth is combined with religion which for me is a blind faith including all other faiths/Religions To understand your concept sir people have to get out from the vicious cycle of faiths and move towards self realisation and self allainment from energy. Since youtube comments are limited to 500 charecters, i will simply say that Alvin Plantiga has written an excellent and undeniably sound repsonse to the "problem of evil" which the tedx speaker seeks to use as a means of casting sure doubt on the existence of God. Once one has considered and understood plantiga's argument, the argument from the problem of evil falls about. If wish to read Plantiga's work (which I suggest you do), simply search Alvin Plantigas free will defense

to tell you the truth, I am a spiritualist and believe there are gods, but the one god of Israel is confusing me. is it Saturn, or is he Satan? each planet is a god. religious writings say; let us make man in our image and in our likeness, that is not supporting the one god theory but the theory of many gods united an a legion called Elohim. I do not support that. I believe there is one God who created the universe but this God is one of us (we are of his race of gods) but he is the most advanced of the gods (which are good or evil gods, as not all gods are good.) I believe God created this universe or at least this galaxy (milky-way) to house us and protect us from being devoured by evil gods (who are operating in this realm & physical reality.) it is not only our energy (many forms of it) that they are feeding on but also on our awareness. when your awareness and consciousness is limited, you slowly de-evolve into a lower form of being, and eventually can stop existing. our society and culture, our media and what we are being taught is doing exactly that, and many do say that they are devil worshippers (I believe they are worshipping evil gods/spirits and beasts.) which is of course a known fact that they like to spill innocent blood and feed on our energies. most people can not even think straight (due to their spirit being damaged & their awareness being destroyed.) fact is that humanity follows leaders and that is how it survived till now. science totally supports this with many experiments. the earth all all forms of living was created by God as a mechanism.
@ehhhhhwhocares
@ehhhhhwhocares 9 жыл бұрын
maya bell That's all very interesting. In order to properly see where you're coming from, I'd like to start at the begging and ask; Why do you hold that there are a plurality of gods, rather than a single unified God? I would note that the "religious text" you quoted is found in the torah (jewish) and the bible (christian). If you're going to appeal to that document for your argument, you must first presuppose (or prove) the existence of the one God, since the torah and the bible both explicitly express that there is one, single God. Obviously, this would go directly against any argument you make for the existence of many Gods and therefore simply isn't a good way to begin.
@imayabell
@imayabell 9 жыл бұрын
maya bell it is not only in judaism an chritianity bu also in the quran islam. it not only says Elohim (plural of god) but the words let us also plural. that we, the gods, not only the creator God had something to do with creation of the form of life on earth is obvious as we manifest what we are in spirit into the material world. the Kabbalah clearly says that God had parents. gods are a high form of spirits with higher levels of awareness, we are all from God and of God's race. this is common sense really if you know your religious facts. God did not create our souls. (also common sense) therefore, you can not blame God for your wickedness. satan only tempts and deceives, it is you who does everything else. so you can not blame satan for anything bad you do either. and then we have free will that God gave us to make our own lives as we choose. the subconscience is another part of our being. then there is the side of the brain hidden from our conscious thoughts that holds all the memories of our past lives and our desires which are not always good. we are all damaged, and that is the original sin, we fed on each other and we caused damage to each other. this universe was created by God who is the first of all the gods to realize what was going on. we are de-evolved, damaged, partly chewed on, and the deceptive world we live in today with evil gods and lies further destroying our spirits and bringing our awareness of reality down to zero. flowers are alive, we reincarnate into trees and plants also. did anybody ever tell you that? i was moses, buddha, benjamin franklin etc. i really do not care anymore if the scum evil gods call me crazy. yes of course i am a goddess. if i was not so, i would not have the abilites i do. i do not know everything. and i do not know many things. it may be better to keep some things secret from evil spirits who will use the knowledge to further harm and destroy us. this universe or at least this galaxy and world was created to protect us from the evil gods who want to continue to feed on us. but real gods do not need to feed on anybody or anything. they have endless powers and energy. we may be different species of aliens. the evil gods not really like the good gods and neither are the lowly spirits who keep doing evil and allowing themselves to be food just like cattle. but i think we are all the same but we became different through time, as we are constantly evolving. and as i said, God is the one who is the most evolved. as Hindu gods stories and reincarnations show, we are reincarnated into different living beings, but we are still the same soul avatars.

according to him religions are based on realizations humans got when they achieved a "deeper glimpse into the nature of reality" [through experience]. thing is one can't just feel the way universe is because our brains aren't somehow 'tapping' into it. our brains create the model of the universe from the information that we get from our senses. the model we each have in our heads is only as good as our senses. example, visual illusions. (science can improve that model, but we don't 'feel' it) ...so, umm, religions go into trash. about the 'spiritual humanism' ... according to him brain is like the light-switch that needs to be activated to allow the electricity to 'flow' to the light-bulb ... "brain is required to manifest consciousness .. what is this that allows us access to reality .. that spiritual underpinning revealing itself as consciousness, as awareness of surroundings around you" ... [according to the light example] the brain is required to activate the 'flow' of electricity/consciousness, which is somehow 'spirit', which is somehow the universe (machinery of the universe?). basically consciousness is our brain 'tapping' into the universe ...assuming that is a correct interpretation, 'spiritual humanism' goes into the same trash with the religion explanation; our consciousness is based on our senses not a magical connection that allows us to the matrix code of the universe [as can be seen by the visual illusion example]

You are absolutely right when you say that we create a world based on the input received from the senses. But what happens when we dream ? what you experience in a dream is similar to what you are experiencing when you are awake, is their a difference ? which one is real ? the reality which we created when we were sleeping or the reality which we create when we are awake ? So this leads to Maya, illusion, the world that we create and relate to is a matter of illusion by our brain manifested by the senses. was the pain which you experience when you dream of the death of your loved one different to the pain you experience on the death of your loved one when you are awake? which pain is real ? so what is reality ?

jānis graumanis You make interesting arguments here, but I do not agree with your starting point. I believe that there is something you could call a 'common reality' (=the deeper glimpse), which is only felt if your mind stops trying to grasp it. You are absolutely right that our brains create the model of the universe from the information we get from our senses, but this model is purely your INDIVIDUAL model, the one based on logic reasoning which is nothing more than seeing patterns in the world around us. Thinking it as this way, it makes more sense that Mr.Lakhani makes the analogy with the 'light switch'. Everyone has it's own individual reality based on your personal life, but if you allow to step away from this ( =turn on the light), or at least recognize that this is YOUR reality, not everyone's, you can feel reality for what it really is. But as he also said, putting spirituality in words steals away it's meaning, so don't think on it.

Yes Michaels 543210 the model that one created fr the information we get from our senses through is individual it is not very much different from what is perceived by other individual who are living in the same world. However when you come to spirituality every body seems to have a different version of it. Reminds me about the story of the blind people and the elephant how each individual perceives how an elephant is, the truth of the elephant is realized only when we look at the elephant in totality

when you are unidentified with your mind and body that is a state called "End of all suffering". But it is not Moksha...moksha takes ages, centuries...even multiple births to achieve....it is about being free from cycle of life and death. When you die your body dies consciousness doesn't and keeps on repeating the cycle of birth and death...and it becomes tiresome and stressful to live any longer and you wish for a full-stop.

I honestly didn't understand what he is trying to say. Yes consciousness is an unsolved problem that at the current moment seems to be unexplainable via materialistic means but that doesn't make sense what Jay Lakhani is trying to say.

Saying consciousness is material is like saying KZbin is just your phone made of glass and metals, and therefore KZbin is just glass and metal. If you smash your phone, it can’t play KZbin, so you think you’ve destroyed KZbin by destroying something physical, and therefore KZbin is just a physical glass and metal thing. We know that’s silly. We know that the glass and metal are just casings, enclosures, for mathematical flows of digital data that is formless. Digital data can be temporarily stored in form like a hard disk or a DVD, but the data itself can live and flow without it, it can live and flow as WiFi and without any physical form. We know the reality underpinning software is not physical but mathematical. Mathematics can exist outside of physical form, like digital data flowing in WiFi or cellular spectrum, or it can exist in physical form like a hard disk or DVD. You can’t smash WiFi or spectrum. You can distort or jam it with obstacles, or you can absorb it and pretend like it wasn’t there to begin with, or you can absorb some of it with a receiver and process its information and manifest it as a video on your phone. When you see Jay Lakhani in the video speaking to you, know that he is dead and no more, he has no physical presence anymore, but you’re seeing him, not just through a video projecting patterns of light and sound vibrations, but through another receiver, your mind, which, just like the phone which is able to process WiFi, is able to process those patterns of light and sound vibrations as the image and words Jay Lakhani, though he is gone from this world. Unlike the phone which can only process the protocol of KZbin and doesn’t see the video as anything other than signals to emit pixels and sound waves, your mind can process the light and sound signals to conjure up an articulate and profound human experience of Jay Lakhani speaking to you. You’re not just seeing the pixels, you’re experiencing something far greater, you’re in the TEDX room with Jay Lakhani, inside your mind, having a human moment of connection with a marvelous being of life, though he doesn’t exist anymore in our material world. That experience is not a material manifestation, though it relies on the physicality of your eyes and ears, and the physicality of the glass and metal of your phone or laptop, and the physicality of your neural network, these are all just relays to act as mediums and conduits. Even KZbin is a medium or conduit, the video was not recorded by KZbin but merely transmitted by KZbin. The camera man, the studio, are conduits. Even Jay Lakhani’s mouth and hand gestures are conduits. He spoke in his mind and it later came out through his physical mouth, and entered the physical microphone, and KZbin’s physical data centers. But all those relays like cell phone towers are not the voice call you have with your grandmother, they’re just there to facilitate the conversation you have with her because of how far away she is. The bond and connection is non-physical. And the “aha” and eureka-like epiphanies you have when listening to Jay Lakhani are equally so not reducible to materiality.

why are they using the terms Humanism? Hinduism is not Humanism. all current and past religions can claim to be Humanists, but they are not. when you say; respect and love all religions, do not go to war against others for religious, nationality, or other superficial reasons, and humanity's place is on earth to live as spiritual living gods, (happy, healthy and ever evolving,) then you can say your religion is Humanism. Not all spiritual religions are Humanism religion. and the fake Humanism is Atheist Humanism. Humanism is a religion on its own yet the people of the world seem to have a problem understanding that Spiritual Humanism is a religion on its own where human beings are the most spiritually evolved living beings on earth with the most awareness. A human being and all that is, have spirits. Souls are aware living free spirits. being a good person is when you respect all spirits and living beings, & hold humans at top of spiritual level of being & awareness. it is not what race, nationality, religion or other group you are born into, but what kind of human being you are. you must not put racial, national, religious or other grouping difference over humanity. without humanity, you are nothing and can never be a good person of any religion, nation, race or any other division. anybody who tries to deny your spirituality and says that you can be a human without the spiritual part, is lying and denying what you are. not all humans are spiritual or have achieved spirituality, but that does not mean they can not be spiritual, they are simply not at that state or level in their awareness. also, real science is real religion. one day, we will have technology to see spirit world and spirits. anti-matter is what the soul is made of and the soul is present in the material world by being housed in a spirit body which is partly physical and partly non-material. I have been talking about these things for years. science is trying to take religion over and we are living in a scientific dictatorship which is science altered and shaped by bought-up scientists who say what they are told to say by their funders. I am an activist also since our human and religious rights are violated by corrupt governments using false science and corrupted science to dictate to us. I am a healer. you can heal with medicines and herbs. you can heal with positive energy. but when you are a god, you can heal simply by godly spirit (no physical, chemical, plant, living or energy required to heal. I can do that.) Humanism religion is spiritual in nature; as humans and living beings are aware free spirits with a godly soul. Not all spiritualism is Humanism. There is also evil spiritualism. There is atheist Humanism which is a fake corrupted Humanism which is really nothing but atheism which claims humans are nothing but animals. Humanism religion existed from the start of time. The bible supports the superiority of humans over other living beings in spirituality. Science is not humanism. But when science is advanced enough to learn what spirit world is, you will see that spirit world is real. my personal website is mayabell. com

@@lnbartstudio2713 & Chadwell Clifford, Nor is it matter, nor energy. So that is what spirit is not. Now here is what it is: Spirit is everything, and it is also nothing. Let's strive to elaborate with a more detailed answer... We can understand what Spirit is by reaching back to the wisdom of the Alchemists. Spirit is the Quintessence. It is the aether from which all matter and energy proceeds from. It is the substance from which all other substances are composed of. Yet it is so fine a substance as to be indistinguishable from nothingness. It is the substrate of paradox from which all of the quantum fields arise out of, boiling like a mathematical probability soup. Spirit likewise serves as the scaffolding for consciousness. But spirit itself is unconscious. Spirit permeates all of space and all of time, yet it is also beyond space and time. Spirit is the underpinning of all and everything, yet also the underpinning of nothingness. The mathematical expression for spirit is: ∞ = 0 Spirit is represented in the symbol of the Ouroboros. The head of the snake represents the fullness of everything in boundless expansiveness. The infinite. Travel down the body and you reach the realm of the finite. Continue to the tail and it tapers off to the infinitesimal, and ultimately down to nothingness. And what you find at this limit is that this realm of nothingness is identical to the head as the realm of the infinite. An artist starting with a blank canvas can add paint so that an image takes form. Continue adding paint, and you reach a stage where all negative space has disappeared. And this state of absolute fullness paradoxically returns the canvas to the state of having absolutely nothing that can be distinguished. Absolute fullness is indistinguishable from absolute emptiness. And the work of art is an expression of spirit from the start, and also at the end, and also at every step in between. The canvas can be understood as space along one axis. And time along the other axis. And the paint applied by the artist is energy. The patterns of energy manifest as matter. The paint and the negative space are male & female aspects of spirit. The yin-yang duality of wholeness that has been split into parts for the purpose of expression of spirit into a realm that contains body, mind and soul, along with matter, energy and consciousness. E = mc^2 ...this is the equation which describes these separate aspects of spirit which have manifested as energy, mass and consciousness. All emanating forth from the collective unconscious totality, and nothingness, that is spirit. Mathematics is consciousness constrained by the structure of logic. Art is consciousness unconstrained, fully free to express itself in chaotic ways in contrast to the ordered expressions of math. They are female & male aspects of spirit, which combine in various proportions to form the universe in its entirety. And also everything which is beyond the universe. This proportion of logic to chaos is a ratio, which is known as the logos. This logos ratio is what forms thought, and this created realm of consciousness serves as the foundation from which all of material existence springs forth, in the same kind of way that dreams spring forth from our consciousness in our sleep. What we experience as reality is the collective dream of spirit, filled with countless individual souls, objects and events of interaction between them all. This is the long answer to the question of what spirit is. The short answer is that spirit is everything and nothing. The purpose of presenting the longer version is toward gaining a full understanding of the short answer. There is another way to say this: Spirit is the ghost, and the host. It is both nothingness, and also the substrate which enables the wafer of a matrix within which absolutely everything in existence is constructed upon. This substrate forms a kind of cosmic waffle, if you will. This word waffle can be useful because in carries connotations of both a type of scaffolding, and also oscillation. This ratio of waffling oscillations that happen in the realm of spirit give rise to consciousness, and likewise give rise to the quantum fields that permeate spacetime. And from these mathematical fields of probability spring forth a bubbling of a quantum soup which, upon observation by consciousness itself, manifests as matter and energy. By a food analogy, consciousness can be thought of as the syrup which gives flavor to the waffle matrix. Spirit interacting with spirit, in separate aspects. Nothingness is stimulated by nothingness in an infinite way, which gives rise to absolutely everything. And every single aspect of this across the entire spectrum is a manifestation of spirit. Revisiting the mathematical equation presented earlier, the terms can be rearranged like this: 0·∞ = 1 Zero times infinity gives rise to the unity of the entire universe. Out of spirit's nothingness, the quality of the wholeness of spirit is extracted, by way of the boundless abundance of nothingness. And the force that drives this entire process is desire. It is all driven by eros. The universe exists because of the passion for it to exist. We exist because of boundless love, the most fundamental attribute of spirit.
