Nah, you just pin the hollow wheel to the paper using a drawing board underneath. Then it works fine.

The original did…. There’s a documentary on here somewhere about Spirograph. It originally sat in a grove like the groves on a record. Will see if I can find it and post a link to it later, for anyone who is interested!

I still have one from when I was growing up. I remember my dad would never let me play with it till I was older because he thought i would break it. This was always seen as a genderless toy by my family when I was growing up.
