When I opened the full page set I just took the paper from one side (the brown side) - the same as you up to 2:12 - but instead of ripping off the paper on the reverse side I pushed the gears etc out from the bottom. The small bits then remained on the sticky paper and could be collected and saved; this avoided them flying all over the place. The cardboard it was mailed in provides a useful sleeve for the frame. I put most of the gears in a large chocolate box; the smaller gears went into a small food container, as did the 'holes' (though I'll eventually move those to a small tin). Although I bought these for myself for Christmas, I've only just opened them (29th Dec) because I've had major concerns about one of my cats. Had her biopsy results today: good news, so I celebrated by opening the Wild Gears!

I'm glad you could learn from my experience. :) Let me know if you find a use for the holes that aren't doughnuts. Eventually I'll put my large frames into a 16" pizza box - if we can manage to eat a pizza without messing up the box. :P Glad your cat is OK!
@muskndusk8 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I was looking forward to eating a large pizza, but I've no excuse now! My cat is taking meds for the condition she does have, which is far better than the prospect I thought we were facing. I would love to see more videos using just the pieces that come with the Full Page set. Puzzled by the holes that aren't doughnuts; just getting to grips with the ones which are.

Wonderful video, so informative and tempting to buy.!! Thanks.

I got my full page set recently. I didn't know that they came with the "donuts". I kept all the small pieces in a ziploc to not lose them, the bigger in a larger ziploc currently.
@Spirographicart Жыл бұрын
Yes, I wasn't sure what to do with the donuts at first either! Glad I kept them. If you're stuck, Wild Gears does offer a set of donut pieces for cheap.

I love this, the wild gears seem to work really well with those stabilo fine point pens. I find that fine point pens are harder to use on my Spirograph because they tend to make the gears lift and slip off the teeth. Are the wild gears better/more stable in this regard? You seem to use them with easy, and go pretty quick, but maybe you just have better technique than me. I do find that wider point pants are easier to use because of this (on Spirograph at least)
@Spirographicart7 жыл бұрын
Wild Gears are more stable than the new Spirograph sets, definitely. The old Spirographs are more stable. Keep in mind that I mastered Spirograph as a child, and now I'm middle-aged! You do have to keep the pen vertical. With the new Spirographs, they aren't as well made so they're more likely to slip out, and wider point pens help somewhat to hold them down.
@kelseywilson71805 жыл бұрын
This was very helpful to help me understand the possibilities! Around the 21 minute mark, it seems like you knew how to line things up in order for your lines to match up with existing shapes in the design. Can you explain a bit how to do that, or direct me to another video that can? Thank you!!
@Spirographicart5 жыл бұрын
I was just eyeballing it, moving the gear straight out towards the edge. The design I'd already drawn was pointing to the right place. If you're not sure, you can approximate, then roll the gear one way and then the other to see if the hole is lining up symmetrically with the pattern.

Can you help me understand the numbers on the wheels and how to usethe pen wholes
@Spirographicart6 ай бұрын
The big number on each wheel tells you the number of teeth it has. The same number appears beside the cutout hole, showing how many teeth on the inside of the hole. Place a wheel inside a cutout that is bigger than it, put a pen in any pen hole, and start drawing.

What do you keep your Wild Gears in? They don't seem to come with a box.
@Spirographicart8 жыл бұрын
No. I've been using a large zip-lock bag. Works fine for the Compact Set. As for the larger sets with 16 inch frames, I've been sorting the smaller wheels into zip-lock bags by size or shape, but wasn't sure what to do with the frames. Then I just discovered that a 16" pizza box is perfect for them! Duh!

Hello! I love your videos. I bought a Spirograph but it is very difficult to use, the pen is out of the wheel. You could give me some advice to improve the technique? Thank you.
@Spirographicart8 жыл бұрын
It does take practice. I learned as a kid so it's a challenge to break down the movement. Check out my other videos; you may pick up some tips by watching. In particular check out this page on my website - it has a video made by someone who learned as an adult. spirographicart.com/2015/09/06/learning-spirograph/

Is the tooth spacing compatible with the original Spirograph sets? If so....oh, boy. :-) Been playing about with a Dollar Tree spiral art toy during break times at work.
@Spirographicart5 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately the two systems are not compatible. The manufacturing method is totally different - custom laser cutting in acrylic for Wild Gears, and mass-production plastic casting for Spirograph.

One thing that is cool is that the teeth of the Wild Gears are 'involute' in form (which is different from Spirograph. It's a better and more precise approach.

Thank you for this review. Does this set also enable the user to create patterns with lots of points? Would love to see more of your creations with this.
@Spirographicart8 жыл бұрын
Other sets have more gears with prime numbers. If there are no common factors between gear and ring, you get a point for every tooth in the ring. There are only a few combinations like that in this set. Lots of 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 etc. points, and more. And you can always draw a second set of points aligned halfway between, giving more complex designs. Take a close look at the pages shown at the end of the video.

I'm now considering the Full Page set, but it's double the price. Or maybe I'll just stick to Spirograph. Decisions! :)

@Spirographicart8 жыл бұрын
I understand. It isn't a mass-produced commercial product, so there aren't the economies of scale that you can get when you have huge quantities manufactured in China, like Spirograph is. Each unit is produced as it is ordered. For more info on the differences between Spirograph and Wild Gears, see spirographicart.com/2014/07/30/wild-gears-different-spirograph/.

There is discount code "HomeFun" that appears to currently be working (I used it today and it appeared to work) and will give you a $20 discount. So perhaps that would make at least the compact set more of a feasible option?
@milopazi904 жыл бұрын
@@DanielBartholomew1i see. The discount might be useful. But just FYI, im from Malaysia. And the exchange rate is crazy. Still not sure if it still affordable to me. But i will check the website later. Thanks for the info.

@@DanielBartholomew1 Wow! Thank you so much for sharing that info about the discount code! It still works, and it made buying a Wild Gears compact set as a gift for my adult son much more doable. He has always been really into everything mathematics-related and I know he'll love this. (BTW, he suffers from serious anxiety brought on by a really severe chronic pain condition, and I've been looking into various ideas for gifts that might help him de-stress, relax, and also let him use his creativity.) That's kind of dumb that it doesn't have anything to hold them in. I just got the Super Spirograph box and it comes with sections to fit everything. I wouldn't want to buy loose pieces like that.
@Spirographicart8 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind that this is not a commercial product like Spirograph, but more of a hobbyist's thing. The whole thing fits nicely in a large ziploc bag.
@calia3868 жыл бұрын
What difference does that make? You still can't package it in a carry case?...Seriously
@muskndusk8 жыл бұрын
I bought the new Spirograph Deluxe set some time ago and HATED the box/carrier it came in. The spaces where the gears etc go are too small and warp the larger gears. I ended up buying lots of vintage sets. I've just received the Full Page Set of Wild Gears but won't let myself open it till Christmas. After opening, I'll buy a large pizza, line the pizza box and keep the Wild Gears in there (I've bought a nice container for the smaller bits). I have heard that the new Super Spirograph has larger spaces for the pieces, so has to be carried horizontally. Mine is a vintage set.
@leedorrington87558 жыл бұрын
I've ordered the 3 small wild gear sets with plans on getting the larger sets later on. I'm glad they don't do a case when any suitable storage box or simular would work. If they did a case it would likely be individual so my £100 order would be plus 3 cases cost that may in my case go in the bin, so be a waste of money and people complain about the cost as it is.

Lee Dorrington After opening mine I discovered that the cardboard it comes packed in makes a great sleeve for the large part. Other bits are in a choc box and a food container.
