You didn't talk about how motorcycles portrayed in movies always seem to have a 43 speed gearbox. John Connor's little dirtbike is the best example of this. He's always upshifting to another gear.

the changing gears is what winds me up. and speed with rev sound . eg a car chasing a bike the car is going 50 -60 mph through traffic the bike is like just going through it but redlining and not going gaining speed like left in 1st gear but it keeps changing and keeps the same revs but never gets any faster. eg Paycheck

The female rider in the Tom Cruise scene is a great rider, Jenny Tinmouth. She is an ex British Superbike Championship rider and the fastest woman around the Island of Man TT circuit with an average 119.9mph lap. Great rider.

The fact that none of them held the clutch in the middle of the lean was actually super professional

For the Bond film, the jump was legit. They had a ramp built that they edited over. I also think they switched to a lighter motocross bike, but dressed it up like the Triumph, for that jump.

I recently saw a movie or series where a dirt bike sounded like a 1,000cc inline 4. I remember a scene in Sons of Anarchy where a Dyna was speeding off while the rider was shooting a pistol...with his throttle hand. Glad I'm not the only one who rolls their eyes so hard at these scenes.

Rogue Nation is by far one of the best motorcycle scenes in any movie, ever. My only gripe is at the end of it, there's literally no reason at all for him to lay it down. The road is completely open and she takes up almost no space. A nudge in either direction and he could have easily gone around her and stopped safely. Other than that, it's just an amazing scene.

I am a VFX artist and worked on that whole chase sequence at the time, around 2015. I only started riding motorcycles relatively recently, but it would have been much more fun if both things had overlapped.

I worked on many shots of that Rogue Nation chase sequence. If I'm not remembering incorrectly due to all the sleepless night we pulled back then, most of Ethan's shots leaning the bike and almost touching the knee were shot with the bike on a rig. That was all removed in post. Also, the shirt may have been added afterwards to compensate for the fact that everything was happening much slower and was played back at a faster rate to make it feel fast. His hair is barely moving. In fact, we even had to add or enhance a lot of windscreens in post, and a lot of similar things (helmet reflection cleanup, bike lights, dust kickups, etcetera) that are the kind of invisible VFX most people never notice as much as those horrible CG trucks.

@@bardanmalla193 on top of a structure that's carrying the bike. As in the bike itself is not rolling on its wheels. Imagine a low trailer or flatbed truck where the bike can lean sideways if needed. Same as they did on the big motorcycle shot on Top Gun with the F14 in the background. These days it's quite easy to keep the top part of such a shot and reconstruct the lower part (road and wheels) properly with visual effects using data from secondary cameras and some basic CGI.

There is a whole behind the scenes on Terminator 2 and that exact jump. They used wires to secure the bike and make sure it doesn't fall apart. So the stuntman did the jump, but the impact was reduced thx to the wires.

@kiryskao9962 You are also right, the bike had a kind of harness attached to it, which lowered it to the deck much more gently than gravity alone would have it. The harness was then removed from the frame digitally, if I remember rightly.

Another thing to bring up about Steve McQueen's work in "The Great Escape" you missed out on which I found to be extremely cool was that there are several scenes in the chase sequence on motorbikes where Steve is on the lead bike getting chased by Steve, in full German uniform with helmet and goggles, riding another motorbike. While Steve is on another motorbike a bit further back trying to catch up. The reason for all the multi-tasking was pretty simple - Steve was an extremely good motorbike rider, and the director and he didn't see any reason why he shouldn't show off his undoubted skill. And since the cinematographer and editor were also on the top of their game, it's all done seamlessly.

Guy Martin did a show where he reproduced the Great Escape jump. They used a Triumph Scrambler XE and had a stunt team involved. They basically did the stunt for real, as close to the original location as they could find. They did a massive amount of prep at the Triumph factory: they went over it from top to bottom stripping out everything to cut weight. Everything that wasn't involved in making the bike go and stop came off. They changed the rear springs and put extra fluid in the front forks. Triumph also have the original Great Escape bike at the factory visitor centre, and Guy got to ride it around the car park.

One of the earlier Mission Impossible, maybe MI3, had his bike magically changing tires when the chase went from road to sand. Suddenly more clearance, changed suspension, and knobby tires. Its lije they weren't even trying to hide it. Happened on a few episodes of CHIPs in the 70s too.

Noticing a mistake and having your suspension of disbelief broken is not cognitive dissonance, though. Cognitive dissonance is emotional discomfort experienced from holding incompatible thoughts. To give an example relevant to your line of work, “I always put safety first“ and “I sometimes fly hungover and tired“. Those two thoughts are contradictory, so a pilot with both of those cognitions will experience dissonance.

One of my favorite examples is Tom Cruise on his Ninja in Top Gun riding without a helmet. Active duty US Naval personnel are required to wear full PPE while riding either on base or off. He should have had a helmet on, and when he took Charlie for a ride she should have been wearing pants, a jacket, and helmet since their PPE rules apply to passengers too. While Maverick is known to disobey rules, I doubt even he would risk his wings to a dumb mistake on a bike, especially when he has lines like, "When I fly, I'll have you know that my crew and my plane come first!"

Another thing that always irks me is when the "Hero" escapes via bike and has whatever car/jeep they are being chased by full of goons and they get right up beside the hero only to shoot at them rather than just turn and knock them off, even a sudden swerve is likely to make someone crash on a bike, let alone getting shoved by a moving vehicle

It's a 1963 TR6 Trophy in The Great Escape. It never looks quite right when a motorcycle or bike is strapped to a rig getting pulled along the road. Even if you're going straight, the bike isn't straight up and rigid like that. I often see scenes (or commercials) where someone kick starts a vintage bike and there's clearly no compression... like they're got the clutch pulled in to make the kick starter easy to kick through

I went over a set of railroad tracks on a 1990 Fat Boy (same bike) got about 6 inches of air. When the 800 pound bike hit the ground it was a near death experience. I saw this movie in a theater, imagine the looks I got when I stood up a called Bull-Shit on this scene 😮

You are right on the 'Arnie' stunt. The bike was suspended on wires, which is why it's so level through the air, unlike what would actually happen if you jumped a Harley, or any other bike, from that height.

The jump in Terminator did happen, but the bike was on wires to keep it stable and upright. They lightened it up as much as they could and I think they modified the suspension. There’s behind the scenes video of it out there.

It was fun to see for sure! Before I got to riding myself, I was intrigued by Norman Reedus and the CB750 he rode in the Walking Dead series. That bike looks and sounded so awesome gave me goosebumps all the time. This really made me eager to get started as well. He rode other bikes as well which was so cool to see him and the Walking Dead hold on to that.

There have been some pretty good motorcycle scenes in movies, too, though. One that I really liked, that was somewhat contemporary, is Ryan Gosling's performance in "The Place Beyond the Pines". That's a generally underrated movie, in my opinion.

the Triumph TR6 Trophy was used in TGE because no German motorcycle of the time or even near it had the suspension to handle the fence jump - a BMW R75s would have snapped in half on the landing. Even the Bonneville was anachronistic - it's the 1961 model. Also, McQueen refused to straddle a BMW.

in the bond one, i’m pretty sure for the big jump, they used a dirt bike and disguised it as the XE. also, some guys in england (i think) replicated the steve mcqueen jump on one of those XEs, and even with a skilled rider it was a massive jump and the suspension bottomed out and nearly bucked him off. still amazing. also i sent you the bond scene although i’m sure many others did, thanks for including it!!

You should find a copy of "Then Came Bronson". Some times when he rides the Sportster offroad it looses a cylinder and becomes British. All stunts are done by Bud Ekins of "The Great Escape Fame" btw. You also should have included the Simpsons biker episode. It was more believable than Torque. Lol

Did you just call the absolutely legendary Triumph TR6 used in The Great Escape a crappy motorcycle? It was literally the precursor to the Tiger. It absolutely was built for off road use and was used by McQueen in multi-day off road enduro races.

I think there ws a similar video with Casey Stoner doing the reviews. I think he mostly got the same comments as you. For the Tom Cruise form, I think he mentioned that using the knee is only for having a reference point for lean angle, and that its pretty scetchy without kneepads :D. So to sum it up, in many cases in movies the movements are technically correct, but used for wrong reasons.

Note how often those girls had their hand off the throttle during their battle. Of course in real life the bike would suddenly decelerate as soon as the hand came off. Motorcycles are exciting enough. No need to use CGI or gravity and logic defying fakery. Hell, real riders like Travis Pastrana or Colby Raha are actually performing crazier stunts than the movie team can imagine.

Motorcyclist for 54 years. My most spectacular stunt was easy peasy. My brother and I were on dirt bikes and went under a bridge with a resurfacing project top side. Well later in the day my brother broke his chain. Passing back under the bridge a second time, I headed back to the house to get a tow rope. Riding back to rescue my brother I was approaching the bridge for a third time. A guy top side sees me coming and runs down under the bridge and picks up one end of an extension ladder he placed to block my path. As I approached I pulled a wheelie and punched the ladder with the front tire just like in the movies. The ladder flew out of his hands and I bump bump rode right over the barricade like it was not there. The guy was stunned and screaming at me as I rocketed on by. Ha Ha. It was a beautiful thing. Needless to say we found an alternative way back home. I tell this story to prove a motorcycle can indeed punch its way thru a barricade like a boss. BUMP BUMP BRAAAAP BRAAAAP 😎

3:35 I hate this. It's so hard to lift a back wheel when braking, and you have to have the right sort of bike for it. But I hear people say they won't use the front brake because it's "dangerous". One of the most annoying things for me is the incorrect dubbing, and the lack of wind. You're not thundering down the road and aiming a gun at highway speeds, because it's too windy.

When Arnold punches through the chain gate, sure the front tire is taking the impact and a normal person would have a problem, but this is a terminator robot doing it, so he can just iron-grip that front wheel into submission.

Regarding the GI Joe Snake Eyes bikes, I believe they're Energica bikes with custom fab body made for the movie. Probably why they have a hint of some of the popular modern bikes like the Superveloce etc. On one of the bikes you can still see the Energica twin-headlight front, while the others have a single custom round headlight.

One movie worth searching for is L’aggression a French crime thriller from 1975. Incredible shots of kawa triples being thrashed senseless, peg scraping, wheelies two up, all on public roads.

go watch guy martin talk about his famous 170mph+ TT crash, the fireball was exactly like that. guy said, he had a full tank of petrol, lent it into the corner, thought he had it, thought he had it. decided he ddint' have it. jump ship. bike into a heavy stone house wall. local paramedic said he saw the fireball, bent down to pick up his kit and and as he stood up saw guy sliding past him on fire

ONE of my BIGGEST ISSUES with motorcycles portrayed in films is the sound of the various bikes engines, where one film a single cylinder dirt bike will sound like a high revving inline 4, or, a 2 stroke will sound like a 4 stroke (eg a 'Stroker trailie' sounding like a thumper 'mud plugger' or visa versa), a BMW (or other) twin sounding like a 16v race bike, or, even a 4 cyl sounding like a BLOODY SINGLE! and more SOUND EDITING MADNESS! And YEAH, like others have mentioned, JUST DO NOT get me started on the unending upshifts! THEN... You have scenes where bikes will crash/ram through barriers etc, and you think "YEAH RIGHT, it's NOT like the front forks will FOLD IN!" 😒😒😒 (And other STUPIDLY CONTRIVED SCENES!)... JEEEEEEEEEEEZUSSSS! 😒😒😒 😎🇬🇧

How about the film Easy Rider where supposedly they rode RIDICULOUS chopped Harleys thousands of miles (coast to coast?) I mean the peanut tank alone would make it impossible without a support vehicle refueling every 50 miles or whatever...yet the ignorant masses only saw "how cool" and proceeded to propel Harley Davidon motorcycles into a cult like (and really UNDESERVED) status as "What true motorcycles ought to be like"

The Rogue Nation motorcycle scene was amazing. I knew nothing about motorcycles when I watched it, but it felt more realistic than any other motorcycle chase scene I've watched. And in none of them do the riders lean over that far. It was the first time that made me think motorcycles are cool.

In T2 running through the gate. I've always seen it as an odd thing to do with a motorcycle like that. Even as a kid. BUT, he's a terminator. There is the off chance that he's actually capable of perfectly calculating all the physics involved in that gate crash to make it look like it did. As long as you don't damage the bike doing that, it's plausible to hit the gate just so right as to where it doesn't upset the bike at all.

My only comment is on Terminator 2 with the gate scenes. The terminator weighs so much that the bike may have remained stable. Online it says they weigh about 640 lbs. The fact that it can carry him though is amazing all by itself. The bike would have shattered on the drop though for sure.

In Mad Max one of the stunt riders actually died when a motorcycle hit him in the head after a crash. Mad Max has some of the best motorcycle scenes and was one of the favorite movies of my youth.

The fun part of the chase scene in the storm drain is that the Terminator in the Tractor trailer completely destroys the entire front end of the tractor trailer when it hits the ground. You can clearly see the axle break in half and both wheels go out to the sides. Next scene, the bad guy is gunning a still drivable truck. i was laughing as soon as I saw those wheels. Most Hollywood chase scenes feature destroyed front ends... from Dukes of Hazzard ..... to Gone in Sixty Seconds. You jump it ten feet or smack it over a curb going sixty, in real life, your driving is done. And your back might be broken as well.

Dirt Bikes? I’m surprised you didn’t mention how every 4-stroke dirt bike has 2-stroke sounds dubbed in and every 2-stroke has 4-stroke sounds and often switching between 2 and 4 strokes mid-ride. EVERY TIME! I challenge you to find a movie with dirt bikes where they get the motor sounds correct.
