Thanks for the video and the template! Really helpfull! Question, if I wanna use the different articulations for any of the instruments, should´t I need to create a different track for each articulation? (For example, 4 tracks for Violin 1: Long, Spicatto, Pizzicato, Tremolo)? Or is there a simpler way to change between articulations in the same track?
@TheREAPERBlog11 ай бұрын
You can do that, or Keyswitches on lowest octave keys, or use Reaticulate extension.

I am using a Spitfire Strings Library. There are many articulations (Legato, Spicatto, Pizzacato, etc) for each instrument. Right now, when I change those articulations, it changes it for the entire track. Meaning, that if I want the violins to change their articulations at any point of the song, I have to create separate tracks for each articulation. This doesn't seem right. Do you know the best way to adjust the piano roll or notation or something so the Spitfire articulations can be specified for each note, and not the entire track?
@TheREAPERBlog2 жыл бұрын
They probably use Key Switches which change articulation with the lowest octave keys. If they do then you can also use the Reaticulate script that converts key switches to program changes and has a nice UI to make it easy. That said, a lot of composers, including Spitfire's team often use different instances for each articulation.

@TheREAPERBlog4 жыл бұрын
in the plugin there's a little keyboard icon, try dragging it to the right and you can pick which octave the switch is on. Otherwise it will be the white keys on lowest octave. Erik's last video here was on a reaper script called Reaticulate which is an alternate way to use keyswitches

You assign each to a MIDI continuous controller (CC) eg modulation wheel and can record the controller on the same MIDI track (or, of course, you can record it at the same time as the notes)
@TheREAPERBlog4 жыл бұрын
or set the track to an automation writing mode (write, latch, touch) and move in the plugin or on the track controls

NICE! I noticed the template on spitfires website. It's a great template, but I think it could be improved with including print stems for all the sections as well as the individual instruments, just like the Logic-template. Nevertheless it's a great start and saves a lot of hassle setting it up
@TheREAPERBlog4 жыл бұрын
reaper makes it very easy to print stems, freeze, etc I think their template is designed to work with all versions so it has a ton of extra tracks that are useless with the Discover version.
@Gminorscale4 жыл бұрын
Can you expand on how to print stems efficiently? Don't know if it's just my template setup, but I can't render my tracks offline, I have to record the tracks onto a stereo track stem I created and then export it. Otherwise I'll get some weird glitches. Probably due to my network setup with VEP But if there's an easier way, that takes advantages of Reapers audio/midi magic I would love to hear it, so I could save some time in my setup
@TheREAPERBlog4 жыл бұрын
must be the network thing, that's something I don't have any experience with. You could still render all at once, realtime through the render window. Or set the Folder tracks to "record output" and record into the project.

@TheREAPERBlog4 жыл бұрын
@@lonco2421 just add a key switch to the MIDI item and you can change play styles/articulations on the same track. It's also very common for composers to split each articulation on separate tracks. Makes the template larger though
@timbmusician4 жыл бұрын
Is this the same as the official Spitfire template for Reaper? I just downloaded that one a few days ago, but I haven't had a chance to test it out yet. I built my own template for BBCSOD when I got my copy a few weeks ago. I went over how I built it in a video on my own channel. I built a separate track for each instrument and each articulation of the instrument, but I had no idea you could map the 3 expression and FX controls directly into the Reaper track! That's a very useful thing to know!
@TheREAPERBlog4 жыл бұрын
Theirs is 68 tracks, with each articulation as a separate instrument instead of key switches. Ours is 27 tracks and has track controls for the expression, dynamics and reverb.
@dnashofficial3 жыл бұрын
seriously awesome. thanks so much for the template. i even learned a couple of new reaper tricks once i used it. just a note, however. for some reason, when it loaded up it replaced the trumpets with the tuba patch. this may however have been because i didn't have the regular vst installed, only the vst3. reaper conveniently gave me the option to reload the vst3 versions instead (god i love this programme) and i was off to the races. but for the incorrect instrument on the trumpets track. just thought i'd let you know. anyway, thanks again!!! this is instantly usable for sketching ideas which is one of the biggest things to an on-the-go creator like me.

One thing to note: the "Expression" and "Dynamic" sliders seem to be nothing more than a gain slider for the Discover version. Discover version doesn't support multiple Dynamic layers, which means it's the same sample at 0 or 100. If someone finds evidence that contradicts this, I'd love to know. But after being driven crazy by the definition of these sliders, we ran some tests and realized that it only controls the gain.
@TheREAPERBlog4 жыл бұрын
its super hard to tell. I could have sword on the cello the dynamic slider makes it bow softer and the expression is simply turning it down. Maybe they just turn it down with different curves.
@stanmanjam4 жыл бұрын
For anyone considering this, the demo really doesn't do the library justice. You really need to use controls (expression, dynamics) to make the instruments sound natural. Amazing results can be achieved with just the Discovery version. BTW Not everyone buys it because they are impatient. Some of us believe in giving back to the musicians (who we are arguably putting out of business) and those who invest time & effort in bringing these capabilities to all of us.
@stanmanjam4 жыл бұрын
Reading back the above sounds harsh - it's not meant as a criticism of those who can't afford it - indeed it's precisely for those people that Spitfire has made this generous offer.
