I used to work not far from Duxford, saw some WW2 era fighters having a mock dogfight once, though they were way too far away to see what they were. I also went to uni in Lincoln, near the Battle of Britain memorial flight. One moving-in day they took the Lancaster right through the city centre and over the brayford pool.

With the depth and level of training and experience they had you get to know an airplane like the back of your hand and it therefore becomes and extension of yourself. That level of training is very rare today, but it was the reason they could be up and out in 10 minutes with the coordination they had. That goes for all sides.
@forseir
@forseir 3 жыл бұрын
@@richard--s they had Link Trainers, which are flight simulators, just without the digital aspect. they are physical cockpits. though not much good in the way of experiencing it, it made you learn an aircraft in and out, and you also learnt how to fly with your instruments So in a way, yes you kinda did have a flight simulator, just not the same flight sims that we are used to

Wasn't it mostly Hawker Hurricanes during the BoB? Fewer Spitfires. Don't forget the Hurricanes! For attacking formations of bombers, the Hurricane offered better visibility and much greater steadiness for shooting. The Spitfire was a slightly higher performance airplane-faster, a better rate of climb, and much more responsive to the controls, according to Stanford Tuck. In other words, each had its good points and bad points. Or, as another pilot said, ‘The Spitfire and the Hurricane complemented each other.’ A former pilot of No. 65 (Spitfire) Squadron observed that the Hurricane inflicted greater damage on the enemy bombers than did the Spitfire; but without the Spitfire squadrons to fight the Messerschmitts, the Hurricane-inflicted casualties might not have been enough to win the battle.

The Mk IX spitfire, clipped wing or otherwise came into service way after the Battle of Britain. It was basically an answer to Germany's deployment of the Fw 190, again this was another fighter that did not take part in the Battle of Britain. The Mk IX (as featured) came after the MkV (yes there was a MkVII spit etc but the number did not always result from chronological developments!) The RAF were flying the Mk1 and Mk2 spitfires in the battle of Britain. None of these models had clipped wings. Later, in June 1941 The RAF had MKV the Spitfire. It was ahead of the Me 109E and F variants and had air dominance. All was good until August 1941 when they first met a 'New' German fighter, it had a Radial engine. It outclassed the MkV spitfire totally and indeed was of great concern. This was when the first 'clipped wing Spitfire appeared. (A modified Mk V with it's wings clipped!) It was an attempt to increase speed at low level and it allowed a faster roll rate! Although it did improve the performance of the spitfire MkV at low level, it was still lacking behind the Fw190. However the Brits had a bit of luck when a German pilot flying an Fw190 'accidently' landed his aircraft at Pembrey airfield in South wales. It appears he got lost and mistakenly thought the Bristol channel was the English channel ! I can only presume that he either did not score well at the map reading/Navigation part of his training or had a defective Compass! Apparently upon realising his mistake he immediately tried to take off but was foiled by the quick thinking actions of an RAF sergeant Again it does not say how he foiled this attempt at escape but there are stories that he managed to get on the wing of the fighter and pointed his revolver or a large spanner at the bewildered pilot! This was a Gift to the RAF as they now had a pristine FW190, the type that was causing havoc with the Spit MkV's. RAF test pilots flew it in mock combat dog fights with the Spitfire Mk5 and just as was feared, it proved to be far superior, However a joint collaboration with Rolls Royce and Vickers Supermarine eventually resulted in the Spitfire MkIX, which first flew in June 1942 and once again put Britain back into the lead! Some say this was the archetypal Spitfire! It still had graceful lines and a more powerful Merlin engine ( before the appearance of the Griffon engine spitfires) But it still flew with the grace and precision of the Mk II and MkV's! This new version Merlin engine had a 2 stage Supercharger which gave this new Spitfire differing levels of Power for the different altitudes, this greater Power resulted in a 4 bladed prop as opposed to the 3 bladed version as seen on the MkI, and MkII spitfires of Battle of Britain fame! It also had a slightly larger tail fin once again to aid in stability with the new powerplant. Incidentally this spitfire usually had cannons as can be seen on the wing. Battle of Britain Spitfire Mk I and Mk II's generally had 4 X 303 machine guns in each wing, and although a few spitfires were fitted with early Hispano 20mm cannons during the Battle of Britain these few were soon abandoned after the cannons locked up after firing a few rounds, sometimes as little as 1 shell being fired. Plus these early cannon experimental spitfires had just that...1x a 20mm canon in each wing and nothing else unlike the later spitfires which could have, say 2 x 20mm canon in each wing or 1 x 20mm cannon and 2 machine guns in each wing. This was after the teething problems of the early Hispano cannons had been resolved. Basically the later Spitfires including the MkIX could be fitted with these different wing/gun configuration and I believe the correspond wing layouts were given a letter to identify, i.e. wing type A, type B etc. Also the Machine guns were 'upped' to the browning 50 cal ( although not 4 in each wing as the 303 versions were) Having given a brief concise history of the early Spitfire types and yes I know there were various versions of the MKV, and MK IX to name but a few and no doubt bored a few people, it was great to see Squirrel back and I appreciate the early lessons he gave on MSFS2020! Without them I would be still stuck on the virtual ground in my virtual Cessna! I may be a fan of aviation but did not have a clue on PC flight sims! (well I am 63!) Once again. Thankyou Squirrel

I grew up with this Spitty WRr Evelyn based at the airforce base within walking distance from me and used to watch her flown around once a month. Spitfire LF. IX PT672 Evelyn. Built as Spitfire LF IX MA793 at Castle Bromwich in 1943, this aircraft went to South Africa in 1948. In 1975 it was painstakingly restored to airworthy condition to represent SAAF Spitfire PT672. She was sold to an American collector in the 80's and never seen in public again.

Nice review. Some advice on landing: I’ve flown a Boeing Stearman in the real world for a couple of years and it has the same problem regarding visibility on final. There are two things you can do to improve this. One is to fly final using a forward slip down to the point where you would flair before straightening out (and then as my instructor on the Stearman would say you pray ;-)) and the second is to perform a much smaller circuit where your base is a circle arriving on final at the runway pretty much where you would flair (and then same procedure regarding praying).

The 'clipped wing' version wasn't released during the Battle of Britain. Clipped wings were first made available on the Mk V and introduced in late 1941, in an attempt to improve the aircraft's roll-rate when engaged in combat with the FW 190. Both clipped and tipped versions of the Spitfire wing are considered to be elliptical in form.

Just fantastic. I've had the privilege of going up with Dave "Rats" Ratcliffe in the rare dual control Spitfire PT462 out of Duxford. Although not as loud as the real thing, the actual sound is very close. The only thing which seemed a bit wrong, was the aileron roll is usually started with the nose quite a bit above the horizon, as the nose drops through the roll due to the tertiary effects. As to the comment about the sound not varying enough, I would say that this is quite close to the real thing because of the constant speed prop. When you open up the throttle, the rpm does not change much (it initially increases just slightly, and then goes back to where it was before as the propeller pitch adjusts) but the volume of the Merlin goes up, because its working harder.

It's crazy to think modern piston aircraft still use so many features from planes designed in the 1940's. Fascinating stuff!

Honestly, when I was doing my PPL I was absolutely astonished to learn how so many of the principles we take for granted were honed in those first 25 year of flight. Silly things like wing washout. They were clever clever people.

Great video! I'm impressed by the details in the graphics and the engine sound. Thank you for the invitation to fly into Duxford. In fact, I have already done that; in the early 1990s did I arrive from Norway in a Fuji FH-200. There were about 100 visiting aeroplanes, but everything was well organized. A great experience.

You leave the canopy open at 160mph and on ground so you can stick your head out the cockpit so you can see around the front of the aircraft

Is there anything sexier than a Spitfire in flight? I have a family connection to this plane, my gran was a ferry pilot in the WAAF and one of the many aircraft types she flew to the front the Spitfire was her favourite. Now this caused issues at gran and grandad’s house as grandad was a RAF pilot and flew the Hurricane, so you can imagine the arguments! My gran taught me to fly and it was very moving (and scary at times) to be taught by her. My gran was and remains my hero, when we’d go flying she’d tell me stories of her exploits during the war and it was magnificent. Grandad continued in the RAF until the late 60’s retiring a wing commander, gran was unceremoniously booted out of service after the war because women pilots were no longer needed.

Welcome back to the KZbin and Flight Sim sphere sir. I was tempted to buy the Spitfire, but just got the Just Flight Piper and wanted to take a week or so enjoying that before buying this beast. I gotta admit it does look like a load of fun and even some challenge with those takeoffs and landings.

I think I’m going to have to buy this Spitfire, it’s abit pricey for 1 plane but it looks and sounds great. I’m off to Duxford museum with my dad in a few weeks, well looking forward to it. Haven’t been there since I was 10/12 years old (43 now)

Sir, You now have a new subscriber - that was absolutely fantastic! It's been years since I messed about with MS Flight Simulator - back then, it was on a 4:3 monitor and an AMD X4 CPU. Today, things are much, much improved and I look forward to installing this on my PC. Happy days...nice one Squirrel! 👍👍👍
