Kotare said before the first kit was released that they didn't want to have an over engineered kit that would only suit a small amount of builders , they would go the hasegawa route rather than ZM and let the aftermarket guys add details for those who wanted it.

Another great video Peter, you are really knocking them out of the park at the moment, congratulations. I’m now intrigued by this kit and the early mk1 may just sit nicely between my Revell MkIX and my Tamiya MKXVI spitfire kits of the same scale. As for a picture saying a thousand words the picture of Lang expresses the stress and fatigue suffered by Battle of Britain pilots, a very sobering image indeed.

Catch up again Peter 😔 as you know life gets in the way of what you want to do 🤧 anyway l think over the next few weeks l will be looking for the Brian Lane Spitfire, especially with that figure (Brilliant) l haven't got a Spit and to me this is the best on the market and as l will get my pension money as l have reach 66 now 🎂so the Government got to give me back some of the money they took of me over the last 40 odd years 😄 great review mate 👍

Might be worth checking out the throttle assembly, if like Kotare's Mid-production Spitfire , it's likely will need modifying for a CS speed prop.

Not an aircraft guy myself but many other creators are happy that engines are not included because (1) either the engine would be out of scale to fit or the external dimensions would have to be fudged if the engine was in scale; (2) the cost; and (3) they believe in the beauty of the clean lines of a buttoned up aircraft.

Hello Mr. Oxley! Great review of two great kits! Those guys at Kotare know how to make a model 👍 The instructions have so many helpful photos and much more to aid the modeller. Got to say, the unpainted pilot face has the same chiseled features and hard stare that Robert Shaw had in the 1969 film. Awesome models, worth the price. Hi Peter, another interesting review of the two Kotare Spitfires. Even though the kits are expensive (seems to be happening with most manufacturers these days), the old phrase… “you get what you pay for” is very pertinent; but the cost is offset by the quality of the the plastic moulding, resin figure (Brian Lane Kit) and the excellent instructions included with each model. The fact that Kotare gives a very detailed history of the aircraft and Brian Lane has to be applauded. The step by step instructions give the modeller the simplest way to construct the kits without any ambiguity to where parts go. All this extra attention to detail and quality parts are worth paying the extra money. Personally I tend to stick 1/48 and 1/32 aircraft model kits. So this is right for myself and perhaps most other modellers. Peter will you be tempted to buy and construct one of these Spitfires?

I have bought the early version and want to build the box art version. The only annoyance so far has been having to chop the bottom wing to remove the gun heating ducts in the air intake and filling it and the hot air outlet shrouds near the ends of each wing. They do supply plugs for the holes near the end of the wing, but I think the Tamiya mk 1 is superior in this respect as it is a case of drilling the holes and putting pieces on rather than cutting and filling. But that aside it’s a nice kit even though it’s got no engine. I did buy the book and it appears they do a later spitfire one and an early Hurricane one.

The Aluminium paint used on some of the undersides would not have been *really* reflective, certainly not as much as bare metal, but the sort of gloss cellulose silver paint / dope that you would have seen on all pre war fighters, such as Gladiators. The same silver that you find on Spitfire undercarriage legs, engine bearers, inside, wheel wells, and flaps, and other internal fuselage parts. This is how they were originally delivered from the factory before the war, and the various new schemes started to appear. A very interesting Air Ministry film on KZbin *"Daily Inspection of a Spitfire | (1940) Instructional film"* has the same early black/white & silver Spit finish shown in the kit. The silver finish is clearly visible on the tailplane, and other places, but the wheels, legs and covers are clearly painted black or white. Well worth a watch. Takes me back it do.

Doing the "brian lane" right now, i love doing these wing nut wings style kits with a real life person attached to the aircraft. When kotare comes out with their me 109 i hope they will have a special edition with figure.

Nice kit, but...not sure i like the spine arrangement as itbmeans you have TWO joins to deal with. I not as excited as everyone else about this kit as i do think it's a bit over priced regardless of some of the over engineering and the instructions. I'd say thats why it costs so much because of the research that has gone into it. Lovely kit but above my budget. Good review mate. 👍

Ooh, they’re very tempting aren’t they? Does anyone know what happened to the Mk. V Spit they were planning? The Kotare website originally showed box art for it but it’s gone now.

Hi peter nice video,but I do not see the fascination with the lack of parts to put together in the cockpit ,i have seen this in other videos,i thought you bought a model for the pleasure in putting it together,now you pay nearly £100 for this kit, and please tell me if i have got this wrong but one reason for buying a model of this price would be lots of plastic for the money and here every body is making a point of that there are few parts to put together,is it because of its heritage as Kotare ? Well done mate.

Like your review just curious if they put the parts in the early kit for the unarmored and armored fuel tank in front of the cockpit and I m one of them that thinks the kit doesn't need a engine but it could use a mask set

Hi Dewayne, I just double checked and yes the Mk.1 kit also includes the unarmoured fuel tank, part F21 as part of the unique extra sprue with the two-bladed prop etc. 👍🏻

Could the Merlin they designed be more relevant for a later mark? The booklet looks nice, but I have the Shacklady doorstop so I figure that will suffice.

A note on early Spitfire undersides per Air Ministry doctrine (surely, there must have been a few non-compliant airframes around): 1. Original production: Aluminum paint overall with 50" 'A' type roundels and 12" serial numbers between the roundels and the out edges of the wheel wells. 2. Winter 1938-39: The night(port), white (starboard) half & half scheme was introduced, with the port aileron in white and the starboard aileron in night. No roundels. 3. April 1939 to June 1940: Aluminum paint on fuselage and tail, port wing night/starboard wing white. As described in the 'Brian Lane' Kotare kit. 4. June 1940 to November 1940: Sky overall. Roundels reintroduced in August 1940 were supposed to be 50", but there were of course several variations in roundel sizes. 5. November 1940 to April 1941: Just port wing in night, the remainder in Sky. 50" roundel on port side was also trimmed in yellow. 6. April 1941 to May 1942: Medium Sea Grey w/ the new 32" 'C' type roundels. Solid review, Peter! These Kotare Spitfires are really marvelous. I sure hope they'll move on to the Mk.Vb and c, temperate and tropical.
