What draws you into buying a particular kit Peter?, I would hazard a guess that, like most modellers, it is not just one thing, type, scale, quality, skill level to name a few and affordability would, or should always be a consideration. I don’t understand why you mention how much money you have invested in your collection?, I see it as irrelevant as long as you could afford it, personally I don’t buy anything unless I can afford it, it only becomes an issue if you are spending money that should be used for things that you have to pay, things like mortgage/rent, food, utilities etc, then it IS an issue.

Peter, this is probably your most thought-provoking video. Some years ago, I estimated my possible life expectancy then calculated how many kits I would build based on my then output of four per year. I realised that I had hundreds of kits which I would probably never build and set in motion the task of selling them on. I ended with an immediate build stash, kits on the 'shelf of doom' which weren't saleable and kits that were so crappy no one would buy them. With a considerably reduced stash, ironically, I found myself building more. Admittedly the quality of the kits was reduced but I was far less precious about them and produced quite a few silk purses from sow's ears simply because I experimented, and my skills improved. My ethos since has been this: only buy/build absolutely favourite aircraft types. For me that is the classic jets of the post war RAF even though I like many WW2 types. I now no longer buy armour or warships in the realisation that planes are 'my thing'. And, as you mentioned... if you can't build it without after-market products... don't buy it.

I love my kits. I'm 57, I don't build them to an amazing standard, but for me, it's a throw back to my childhood when I used to save up for a Matchbox 72nd scale, usually hiding in the newsagents window. I have 41 in my stash, and, as I am off to Telford in 3 weeks, I expect this to grow by about 10-15 kits. I have a brand new compressor and airbrush set, but it scares me to use and clean,etc....I tend to brush paint mine, badly. BUT I love them. I'd love to be better at building them, but hey, it's fun for me. My aim for Telford is to get a 1:32 Revell Focke Wolf for around £18. That's as far as my ambition goes. Loved your video ...thanks

In more than 40 years I never used an airbrush. Besides the typical "airbrushed" look I don't like it takes away from the spontaneous act of painting. Our great ancestors (Rubens, Breughel, Van Eyck, etc ...) didn't need an airbrush either when they created their artworks.

Well I have been collecting & building (mostly collecting!) for 50 years. I retired about 18m ago and my first project was to get the attic renovated, have it completely floored, new lighting and (most importantly) the attic hatch was greatly enlarged to fit a new folding staircase to allow easy access into it. I then catalogued my collection (all in cardboard bankers boxes) by numbering the boxes then listing the contents of every box on a spreadsheet, including aftermarket items. Now over the years my best estimate of my stash grew from "56" to "over a 100" to "at least 500" to "almost a 1,000" to "over a 1,000...." and it pretty much stayed at "over a 1,000" for 20 years. Following the completion of my stash count earlier this year I can say that I have 2,418 kits on the spreadsheet plus another 100 or so I bought in the last 3 months or so I have not yet boxed or indexed. The kits are almost all 1/72 aircraft with about 100 comprising 1/144 bombers or airliners and 1/76 tanks.... When I kick it, the second-hand market is going to be flooded with a tidal wave of stuff🤣. I haven't indexed my decal stash yet (I estimate it at "over 1,000") but am in the middle of cataloguing all my books. My wife says I have a problem but it's like the old sketch on not the 9 O'Clock news about the man who drinks. The first man say "I have a drinking problem...I go out at night, drink 20 pints of beer, come home blind drunk and fall into bed, that's my problem"... the next man says "I got a drinking problem...I go out at night, drink 20 pints of beer, come home blind drunk and fall into bed... No Problem!" Remember... He who dies with the most kits, wins! (and it's gonna be me 😄)

I just recently moved from a 2500 square foot house to a 1600 square foot house and I don’t have nearly enough room for all my kits. It took me two weeks to pack them up. I just bought four 3’x6’x14”deep racks and three 4’x7’x18” deep racks to store all the kits. I know that I will probably only build a few of them but, I really just enjoy going out to the garage and sitting at my workbench and looking at my collection. Whether I build them or not I am still getting a lot of enjoyment from them by just having them. Most of the kits are what I would classify as simple 1/24-1/25-1/12 cars or 1/48-1/32 aircraft. The problem is that I have been working on 1/8 Pocher kits for the last six years and I have only finished three of them. So you can see why time is a factor here with the other kits. Anyway, just thought deriving enjoyment from having your own collection to look at and think about is almost as fun as trying to build them all; where would you put them all??

Great video Peter! As for me, the stash is at around 350 vehicles (1/35), 200 ships (1/700), and 70 ships (1/350). Total retail cost of around $60K USD. The dollar figure also includes all the aftermarket goodies, resin and plastic figure sets, photo etch etc. In 1990, my stash stood at around 15 kits total. Finally, I was out of graduate school and making serious money. Also, many new players, e.g. Dragon, Trumpeter, Academy, AFV Club etc., sprang into being and began flooding the market with all kinds of stuff that we hadn't ever seen! In the early 90s I realized I needed to catalog all the stuff I was getting and now have a huge Excel database listing everything I have, what packing box it is in, retail value, detailed description etc. My great modeling buddy Loren looked it over at lunch one day and said, "John, you are a modeler of modeling databases!" The greatest velocity of buying occurred between 1997 and 2013. Sometime late in 2013 I said the great Alec Guinness line from The Bridge over the River Kwai, "My God... What have I done?!" The damage was already done. I do some building, but would need several lifetimes to put a dent in it all! My buddy also said, "What, other than preventing duplicate buys, will the database help you do?" I told him my 3 sons are ages 24, 20, and 18. The database will take away their excuse for wheeling it all down to the curb after I punch out for the last time saying, "Well we don't know what this stuff is or how much it might be worth." If a father can't leave his kids one last guilt trip, then he really wasn't a good dad after all!! LOL!!

I am so glad I saw this episode. After spending 3 months in Philippines this year, I returned to a nightmare. I went into my basement and noticed how warm\humid it was. We had an exceptionally warm and humid Summer, I thought I was back in the Philippines. I then noticed a fine aqua green-blue mold covering a leather strap. I looked at my cardboard boxes that were full of unbuilt kits( mostly Tamiya). After opening some boxes I found mold attacked almost all the decals in almost every model box except those sealed. I was sick to my stomach. How this mold got into a large cardboard box then inside each model box was a mystery. Well the simple answer is spores ride on moisture and the dry boxes attacked like a candle wick for the room sucking in all moisture and their passengers. What I did was open all boxes , then placed them in a Sunny room for 3 days. After, I did a quick wipe with ammonia on the decals with the hope of killing the green-blue invaders. I think it worked , but when I build the kit we shall find out. Plastic sealed boxes , out of the basement, with the moisture packets plus a dehumidifier is what I will be using next. Builders be aware😬

New to this video and it is timely for me. You make some great points Peter about the add ons, but don't you think that the toting up of the stash is only part, the main one yes. But add to them the cost of paints, glues, brushes, various sanding grades, snippers, files and and and, it is suddenly a big, but enjoyable investment. Another tip for your STASH kits: Try to tape-up the box sides; This helps to stop the cardboard warping and keeps the lid tight to the lower box. Tamiya tape is ideal as it is easy to peel back without damage usually. 👍🏻

Back in the old days you could knock up an air fix kit in about 1 hour . Today with the plethora of weathering , rust , 2k, paint ect it’s a massive time consuming process . I notice Tamy models in their catalogs done by their people never get weathered it’s very basic dry brush around highlights and that’s it . Keeping it simple May be the key to building all of those kits in much more shorter time frames and not creat the fear of having to build to expert show completion levels every time .

I find the weathering is often overdone. Active army vehicles in peacetime are kept in pristine condition (at least when I was in the army, long ago). That means no rust, no dust, no damage and touched up paint if necessary. The first task of a crew when returning to barracks after an exercice would be to clean the vehicle.

I mostly get 1/76 scale kits- with a bit of 1/72 aircraft and 1/700 ships thrown in. There's around 100 or so kits in my stash, but I'm only 22 so even at 3/yr they'd all be done by retirement. However, it's hard to precisely count them: sets like infantry sets or bundles like Fujimi 2 packs or the Airfix D-Day Battlefront set (2 tanks, 2 infantry, plus diorama) really blur the line of what is "a kit", especially if I don't build all the contents together, and if they're all available separately anyway. When I started modelling late-2019, I wanted to build in 1/76 (to match my model railway), so I then began hoarding obscure out of production 1/76 kits when I could find them, as well as getting the ones that are still in production (for lower prices). I also have a few model railway scenery and wagon kits.

I think its also about "enjoying" the kit itself, eg how its moulded, the quality etc. I think this is part of a collectors interest part of the hobby, one of many facets. That part is like any collector hobby/interest. Then you build some, others will only be in the collection...Im cool with that. Then you have the supply and demand aspect, some kits are rare or risk becoming rare and you want it in the collection IF you want to build it, kind of secure it for the future. There are so many aspects to this...I think its up to everyone to decide for themselves. I guess I have about 200-250 right now and wouldnt get rid of perhaps more than a handfull.

I returned to the hobby less than a year ago and have already completed around 20 models. I don't try to produce them to the level, which would permit them to participate in exhibitions but I do my best to make them on the level, which would provide me the maximum enjoyment possible during the assembling process and then I take them from the shelf pretending to bomb some talliban targets (I am 39 years old). During the assembling of every kit, I try to implement one or two new technics, which I saw on a channel like this one, but I'm not trying to overcomplicate the process in order not to be overwhelmed. My stash is around 80 models currently and I have around 15 more in orders. The idea is to buy all the models I really want now before some of them are impossible to buy. Afterward, I intend to buy only some new kits, which will be produced or something interesting on an occasion. I'm sure, it will be that way:). My collection is concentrated mostly around Tomcats, Super Hornets, and other airplanes of their generations, with occasional US Navy ships and some WW2 content, which my 8-year son is interested in. So, I hope to assemble them all the stash in the next 3-4 years and not buy something outside my areas of interest despite I love all the kits in general.

Shhh. I think we can all agree that no wives and/or significant others will be allowed anywhere near this vid. We can accomplish ANY stash comparisons with a knowing wink and a nod. We ALL know our stashes can be insane....no need to verbalize it😁. Like you, I must have upwards of 200+ kits (never meant for that to happen). Not sure of ANY of the values as I purchased quite a few some years ago and markets have gone crazy on some of them. I love looking at the ones with original price tags and thinking how inexpensive they once were. I think I have roughly 35 Ferraris, roughly the same in Star Wars kits and MANY ocean liners. The Cunard Queens are very well represented. The ones I would love to start (and finish?) would be my 1/350 Polar Lights NCC 1701 Enterprise (with ALL the lights and upgrades), my Revell 1/400 QM 2 (which is how I found your channel), my Revell 1/27000 Imperial Star Destroyer (again....with all the upgrades and electronics) and finally my Minicraft 1/350 Titanic (haven't touched it in roughly 7 years). I figured I'd stock up for my retirement by buying these kits up while I had a "disposable income", only having to spend my pension on paints (or am I just kidding myself?). My one "long term storage" tip that I can give is that the moment I have a kit in front of me, I put the decal sheet in a Zip-Loc bag. It's the only way I can hedge against burst water pipes or a leaking roof. Great vid. Glad to see I'm not the only one with "issues"😁.

This is my problem: I sometimes can't help myself and start building the easiest or the most interesting etc. parts of a recently bought model kit - while I'm already working on three or four or more other kits in different stages of (un)readiness. I have to force myself to stop doing this and prioritize on the two models closest to being finished. With the simple kits I started with in the 1970s this wasn't a problem, they got finished in a day. But when kits have dozens or hundreds of parts and you have to wait and think in which order certain parts have to be painted before they get assembled to other parts... Well it's the end of summer now, I'm already spending more free time inside. Let's see what I can do with my stash.

I have a list of the next 5 kits I'm going to start, so I'm all set for the next 5 years! Been pretty good on the extra's until recently, and in the past made seatbelts out of tape, etc. but I did splash out for the Eduard ejector seats and weapons sets for the f-14 so about $40 extras - seats look great and a BIG improvement and as I'm having this canopy up so IMHO worth it. Weapons sets - hmm - could have made do! Generally only buying extras when I have kit on the bench!

Agreed a list is important. Keep tabs on value. Incase there is a fire flood etc you can show insurance you have 15,000 dollars of assets. They'll just assume they worth $1 each and cut you a 300 dollar check.

I have a rough list of some of my kits, but most of my model bureaucracy has to do with what I spend and the dates I bought and finished kits. I do take some build notes for future reference: what techniques work and what don't, etc.

Well done Peter. It’s quite brave to admit the uncomfortable truth in public, so to speak. I think this is a subject many of us prefer to avoid. There is a definite need in us chaps to have ‘stuff’. Not sure why. I think I have about 200 kits but I’m not sure as my list is out of date. It’s mostly aircraft but some racing cars such as Accurate Miniature’s 1/24 McLaren M8B and Tamiya’s 1/18 McLaren M8A. Good job I have a big bottle of orange paint! Additionally I have the Lotus 49, Lotus 49B and Lotus 72 all in 1/20 scale from Ebbro and also in 1/12 scale from Tamiya. Why do I need both?!

I have documents for every aspect of my stash that I've maintained since around '95. One lists each kit by nationality, aircraft type, unit, geographic location, date or season/year, rank & name of pilot, victories accredited, and their fate. Another lists all of the aftermarket I've collected for each kit by type and pilot or unit including decals. Currently undesignated aftermarket items in a separate set of drawers are listed at the top of the document by categories like conversion sets, full detail sets, engines, wheels, canopies, cockpits, harnesses, etc. The last pages of the aftermarket inventory lists the kits I've built that notes all of the aftermarket & scratchbuilt items involved. Then, there's a list of decals in the binders arranged by aircraft type, brand, product number, and title, including Kagero books w/decals. I also maintain an inventory of my paints and varnishes. All in a folder named "Model Data".

Many years ago I had a small collection of Star Trek stuff that was proud of. When hard times came around I sold it to pay bills out of necessity. My models may someday face the same fate but if it happens then I’ll rebuild after. That said the size of your stash should be whatever you are comfortable with. My stash looks stupid to some because I tend to lik the wierd stuff. Mainly that means I lean heavily toward fantasy and sci-if subjects with a bunch of aircraft and a smattering of race cars. My stash reflects my own tastes with a general rule of only collecting subjects I would want to drive or fly in someday. The money involved is certainly too much and I’m literally running out of space. This has caused me to carefully consider all future purchases. My wife knows I won’t buy anything hobby related without knowing the bills are paid and food is on the table. I have some kits that have gone up in value and I a couple of cases that has forced my me to carefully consider cashing them out. Decision to sell kits have a lot more to do with how much I want build it than the actual value.

I've worked hard at prioritizing my model builds. I have got a big stash of 75+ models I believe. Could be less than that but plenty. I prioritize about 5 kits at a time for building and try to only have 2 builds going at one time. Lonnie V.

I use the Scalemates stash manager. I am interested in Soviet armour so my stash is mainly Trumpeter, HobbyBoss and Miniart with a sprinkling of others. I store mine in a cupboard in my home office. I limit my stash to what will fit in that space - 30-35 kits depending on size. Enough for 5-6 years building. None of mine will not be built, they were bought for that.

Interesting subject, talking of Matchbox PK16 Harriers and 'what's going to be special about it?' I recently purchased one as a combined postage extra contents unopened which surprised me with a blue tinted M stand? I've never seen one amongst the admittedly modest number of Matchbox kits in my collection inc some spare stands, whether or not I already have one I'd have to dig deep, not sure, quite possibly but the stand will be clear of that I'm sure. Anyway I wish I'd kept a list from day one, 4 years in and it's 'why do today what I can put off till tomorrow' 90% of my collection is old school vintage stuff, Airfix, Kitmaster, FROG & Frogs spawn, Revell GB, 1/72 A/C (plus a couple of the early Revell WW2 fighter 1/32's), 1/32 Auto's, 1/76 AV's, 00 Railway. I like the budget end and input I can put in to tidy and raise their condition, time is money and I only really have one of those. 500? I'm guessing, I added a few resin parts to a new tool 1/72 MkIX Airfix Spitfire on one occasion, something about a 1/72 Merlin that appealed to me, about £8 pushed the boat out on that one. A 2005 1st issue 1/72 Airfix TSR2 probably started my collection before I added the rest 15 years later, the exception where the real A/C got set alight and thrown out of the window, can't really add a lol to that but getting them to do the kit was 1/72 poetic justice done, still safe in it's box and thinking about it I might add a Lightning, there's room in the box just about, my Handley Page 0-400 has a few Fokkers added, enjoying this hobby is priceless as far as I'm concerned.

I have about 30-35 kits, I just started building last year, but I've got most of the ones I want to build now so I'm gonna start slowing down on the buying and ramping up the building. All my kits will be built, my specific issue is I exclusively build 1/48 modern jets (having a focused genre helps keep the stash low, I can't imagine what I'd do if I got into WW2 planes) and they are big, so I don't have anywhere to put them when they're built 😂

Quite a therapeutic video Peter! We are all guilty of hoarding more than we build. My missus has long since learned to tolerate the stash, I am also more than guilty of getting distracted halfway through a build if I get something new, ( the new Airfix 1/24 Spitfire ix is calling to me😉) I used to be fairly possessive of the stash, although my youngest son has really taken a shine to modelling over the last few years and I let him have a kit on condition he finishes it.. I don't want him taking after me! Seriously though I get enjoyment out of seeing him put it together and finishing a Kit. As for me I find I buy paints on the double or treble "just in case" Anyway confession time, I reckon my stash is quite modest at about 70+. Although I must have a couple of hundred paints and dozen or so glues.. I feel better now after getting that of my chest..🙂 My to do list are the zoukei mura F4, Takoms Fv 432, afv club M60, Trumpeters Frogfioot, I just need to convince myself I can do them justice!

I started buying them because I couldn't find the aircraft I wanted in die cast form. I collect Japanese WW2 aircraft and oddball Japanese aircraft from the same time period. When I started, I didn't care who made it or how old it was. As time went on, I started buying high quality kits and spending a little more to get what I wanted. My wife even bought me the air brush to paint them. I now have a very large collection of decals for them as well. I branched out into WWI German aircraft. I really love the color schemes. Now, the kits I have purchased for these are from either Eduard or Roden. Same large amount of unit decals, lozenge, and many paints. Stash is in storage. I try and build like 25 kits during the summer. I don't build during the school year when I teach, it's too distracting and busy for me. I have branched out in the 1/48 scale for the Japanese aircraft, more pricey, but worth it. Another direction I have branched off is captured allied aircraft in Japanese service, as well as aircraft of the Regia Aeronautica. I would say I have around 600 to 700 kits. Right now, I am awaiting the new ICM Ki-21 from the Ukraine, an Arma P-51 Mustang from Poland and a B-17 E in Japanese service from Lithuania. I don't buy from China or Japan anymore. It's exclusively now from US sellers (where I live) and Eastern European sellers. I realize now my stash has become bigger than I intended it to be. I don't buy just whatever anymore. I am very selective and it has to meet my specific criteria.

Hi Peter, sorry i missed the live tonight. My stash is quite modest around about the 40 kits mark. The trouble is, I've probably bought hundreds over the years that ive ended up not building, and then selling on. Just looking at the current stash, theres at least half of it i probably wont build and will sell on. The amount of money ive wasted over the years! I'm a fits and starts builder, only built 6 this year, got one thats almost finished thats been sat on the bench for a couple of months, only needs the clear parts putting in and weathering, but not got round to doing it. And it was a 60 quid kit!!! One i actually binned off recently was the meng king tiger. Got bodywork built, just needed to do the tracks and paint it, but the tracks really put me off and it ended up going in the bin. I think i need to stick to building earlier, cheaper, simpler kits. Its probably time for another clear out. The biggest regret...? I had 8 Fujimi RAF/Royal Navy Phantoms that i ended up selling. The regret was selling them.

I don't have a "stash" - I'm not a collector of unbuilt kits, only a few that represent a reasonable expectation of these being built. With a special interest in Submarines and settled on 1/72 scale unbuilt kits number just a few. We live in a temperate climate where wildly fluctuating weather patterns are generally unknown so garage storage has a benign affect on kit boxes. Plastic seems always to endure.

Another great video on model kit stashes. You have a fantastic selection yourself. For my sins I have a few kits I won't build, 7 Kittyhawk Jaguars, 2 Kaman SH-2G , Airfix TSR-2 and HMS Illustrious. Due to the fact they are not made anymore. Look forward to your next video.

The size of your stash should be dependent on your age and output per annum. With 60 kits, at 52 years of age and with an average output of 5 kits per year, I will be 64 before I eliminate my stash. That is assuming that I don’t buy any new kits which is unrealistic. I would like to sell off a number of my kits which I have lost interest in and replace them at a rate of about 1:2 so as to reduce my stash to 50 or less which I think is acceptable and reasonable. Anyway, excellent and thought provoking video Peter. All the best.

I've got a list...but that's where it ends. All my kits are together in larger boxes, most with silverfish packs and mothballs. Unfortunately because of the size of my stash, half are in my garage(I'm in SoCal so it gets realllllll hot in summertime 100+ in summer), and the rest fill two bedroom closets...and a bit outside the closet. I'm at somewhere between 650-700...but it's not like I got a problem or anything...I can stop anytime I want.🤣🙃😉 And yes, I'm single. My models are much less stressful and enjoyable to be around than most US women, esp in SoCal. Trust me. To be honest, this past summer was an awakening experience when a very bad fire in my area made me stuff my car with most family heirlooms and such with literally about 8 kits total, all but one were my Zoukie Mura kits. The morning I was on my way to drop stuff off at some friends houses before the fire hit my area it started to rain. Saved the day.🙏

I started building models again roughly 14 months ago and I've only bought models I intend to build. My stash is currently s grand total of 4 models... Revell Level 5 Bf-110, Tamiya F-16 Agressor, ICM P-51 B with Ground Crew and ICM P-51D with Ground Crew. I may buy one or maybe two more models before I finish the one I'm currently working on (Takom King Tiger with full interior), but I will try to keep my stash as small as possible, as I've seen how "wrong" it can go otherwise. I have a friend whom I've been told has a fairly large stash. A couple of weeks ago we had a build meet as his place and I got to see his stash. Honestly, I asked him how many hobby stores that had gone out of business he had purchased... I'm not exaggerating when I'm guessing his stash contains roughly 3000 to 5000 models and they are everything from old Matchbox kits to exclusive kits like a huge Titanic. I'd guesstimate that his stash is worth anywhere from €50k to €100k. On the other hand he's more of a collector of models than a builder...

It's a mix of what I'd like but couldn't afford when I was young, something I anticipate would be a pleasurable experience building, or the subject I have an interest in. Of course like books I buy more than I can consume. I've gone slower recently when I discovered I bought a second copy of the same thing, or a reissue/rebox. This is proof to myself I've strayed pass supplying a harmless pastime into stamp collecting.

@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab I think I slightly recoil from the Internet fueled speculative pricing. For example the dragon USS Princeton was about a hundred when it came out, if you search today its five hundred and change. I fear I might spend time and money chasing after "investment for profit" on kits I may not otherwise buy, let alone build. Yes I have that Princeton and four airfix Queen Elizabeth still in boxes. My excuse was i meant to build the Princeton for a friend in Colorado whose grandfather actually served on the Princeton and abandoned ship at Leyte Gulf, QE because I visited the ship when I was a child and it was amazing. My own stash is probably 15-20 kits either waiting to be started or in progress. A gentleman in my local club has literal thousands. We joke in club meetings that his hobby is collecting kits. Many of us will actually just buy off him if there's something we are after. For example, take the SBD-2 divebomber. He has enough of the Academy kit in 48 scale to make ALL of Enterprise's complement before Midway. He has the same for the SBD in another brand (forget off the top of my head). You name a military vehicle, he probably has at minimum, 5-10 of it. Being US based, he lives in a house with 3 car garage, his kit stash takes up 2 car bays-worth of space. Floor to garage door "ceiling" numbering in the thousands.

A better way to protect decals is by putting them inside a resealable plastic bag and squeezing out the air before closing it up. The moisture absorbers can only absorb so much. Once that point is reached, they actually provide no protection.

I agree with you, they work best in environments that will not CONTINUE to get moisture in the atmosphere...The trick is not to put your kits in such an environment in the first place. And remember the gel packs help not just the decals, but the boxes too. 👍🏻

It;s not just the stash, how about all the tools we buy to help us build the kits.

Stash. Hoard is a better description. A loft filled to the rafters in all areas. One large wardrobe and a large clothes press plus overflow stacks in two rooms. I lost counnt of the wargames armies a decade ago and the model kits about the same time when they hit over a 1000 each. No ideaa what the final count is and haave no time to work it out. Suffice to say a handful of kits are now double or treble in the price I paid for them but I will be building all I have.
