Grinnel & Biz nailed it.....Whitt missed it. Always want one dissenter to create a good conversation. Any old school hockey follower loved Cherry. Unfortunately Cherry's best before date expired 10+ yrs ago, Biz captured it better than most. Can't be on his pedestal and get away with that kind of xenophobic rhetoric Cherry was inevitably gonna go down.....he likely regrets going down on the relatively lame comments by his standards......kudos to Sportsnet for having the balls to do the right thing..... Cherry likely wished he'd gone down in bigger flames Kinda reminds us of Trump and his rhetoric.......not good for the US or Canada!!! Loved your podcasts with Tocchet......best ever!

They all had solid points, and goes to show that many people have differing opinions, and sometimes you just gotta move on and not have such knee jerk mob reactions to every little thing people say. Biz is quickly becoming one of my favorite personalities in hockey media. He was very thoughtful in this and I loved what he said at the end. I agree, if we want to change things we need to have levelheaded conversations with people on the other side of the argument. The problem with cancel culture is that it’s just people screaming at each other and “cancelling” someone doesn’t change the underlaying issues.

I agree that I do not believe Don is racist like people are accusing him of. However, I believe a large amount of those leveling that term at him are doing so without an understanding of the word. Racism has become the catch all term for bigotry, xenophobia and/or racism. They are conflating Don's extreme xenophobia with racism...they are not the same thing. Don is "racist" using those people's definition against white people too. He friggin HATES on European players and Francophones.

I don't think this was balanced at all. These were extremely basic and ignorant points. A thorough review of the topic would include, for example, the work of Robert Putnam et al from Harvard University on Social Capital, historic rates of immigration, migration sources, historic composition of countries, the definition of a nation, and, yes, even genetics. No-one said it would be comfortable. The truth rarely is. This was just pablum from guys attempting to position themselves for Sportsnet jobs. Sportsnet made a clear statement of what it's official ideology is. Note the word ideology. That's different from truth. Cherry should educate himself more on the topic before spouting off his mouth, but he's aware there is an issue. Toronto's crime rate has been consistently and dramatically over historical averages from 1900-1960 for decades now. What's the difference? If it is migration, which is an honest point of discussion, the people that are affected by the higher rates (the old stock who are the victims in this case) deserve an answer. There should be no limits to the questions asked.

It didn't warrant a firing offense. However, he did single out immigrants and newcomers when he said you people come here and enjoy our way of life. I'm a huge Don Cherry fan, but I was a newcomer too and I always wear my poppy. Infact, many of my Caucasian friends do not wear poppies. Was I offended? No, I'm not a leftie, but I was disappointed that he singled us out. Don has had interviews in the past where he clearly showed he was anti-immigration and pretty xenophobic (prejudiced against people from other countries), so this is nothing new from him. I think everyone should be wearing poppies, including Canadian-born people. Go to any University or government building in a major city and you'll see how many people don't wear poppies. As Biz said, Don is speaking from a Toronto context too so some people took demographic fact that many Indians, Pakis and Somalians are around there and formed their own conclusions about race. Now this I disagree with, the man is no racist, he's offended Swedes and Russians more than any other group. He's just a xenophobe.

When me and 6 of my white friends were there, we recieved many comments such as “you guys arent from around here are you”. We were a visible minority and were singled out. When I was going to school we stood up in Class every morning for O Canada, Our Father and God Save the Queen. I stood with pride. That doesn’t happen now. Merry Christmas has been replaced with Happy Holidays. Cultural differences has made us change. We open our arms to immigrants. I am a supporter. As I am sure Don Cherry is. He just stood up out of respect for our veterans. Who made our country free. Anyone who feels that was offensive, should maybe think a little deeper here in Canada.

Go to any uni campus and government building and you will see countless Caucasians who don't wear poppies. I was a big Cherry fan, but he went over the line by saying "you people come here and enjoy our milk and honey" before explaining how these people do not appreciate "our" ways. In another interview, he even said he wished he didn't infer blame on just immigrants, and rather on all people who don't wear poppies. I like Don Cherry too, and I don't believe he's racist, but he stepped over the line. All these years my family respected the Canadian customs and traditions, and yet it's us who get called out for not appreciating Canadian culture? I really liked your guys' thoughts about the topic. I also liked how Biz talked about just because someone is not wearing a poppy doesn't mean they don't respect those who gave up their lives for our freedom. A lot of immigrants coming from India, especially in the Punjab region come from military families, if it wasn't their grandfathers fighting in WW1 or 2 it was their grandfathers brother fighting side by side with Canadians, so I highly doubt the absence means they're being disrespectful. I feel like if Don took an approach on informing new people about wearing poppies would it have been a lot better. Instead he chose a phrase the singles people out. He defo shouldn't have gotten fired.
