In his book, Spitting in the Soup: Inside the Dirty Game of Doping in Sports, UC San Diego alumnus and sports journalist Mark Johnson traces the doping culture in professional sports, from the early days when pills meant progress, to the current day, when athletes are vilified for the use of performance-enhancing drugs. In his book, Johnson, who has covered cycling as a writer and photographer since the 1980s, explores the complex relationships that underlie elite sports culture. [11/2016] [Show ID: 31408]

So, 20 US athletes tested positive at LA 1984 and it was hushed up. I only wish that they could be named. No wonder Ben Johnson was annoyed at being singled out 4 years later. I bet he wasn’t the only one that year.

The concept of clean Olympic sport (and competitive sports in general) is completely fraudulent.

Just because the world is full of cheats and liars doesn't mean we should embrace these flaws as a way of life. It did seem that Mark was suggesting we don't bother trying to clean up sport, as if there is no fair play or higher order to attain. I strongly disagree. At the root of all sport is a basic animalistic urge (the drive) and its only the rules that make us human.

I see what you're saying but it's not a level playing field already. Almost every sport now requires steroid use to make it to the upper crust. Some get busted. Some don't. This is particularly like this in mma. You have guys getting away with use while others get busted. Pride Fighting Championship took place in Japan and they allowed steroid use but not street drug use. Those matches were the greatest fights in mma history. Fighters recovered faster and healed better and fought better. You have athletes taking little researched chemicals because of doping tests. Let athletes compete and use whatever means they want drug wise. They cannot win with how things are. There will always be the hunt for new drugs with testing and more harm happens with taking new untested chemicals etc.

@@ClickClack_Bam Well that's the point of it, all of it. We get new drugs all the time, so the doping keeps on developing, and that's the whole point of it. The restrictions must be there so the doping drugs get better, without restrictions there would be total chaos (and that's where we're going with the pace at the moment, because everything is allowed and at the same time everything is restricted, that's basically life.) With restrictions you get a controlled chaos, the drugs keep on developing into better ones, and nobody cares how much harm they can do as long as people get entertained and generate money so the world can keep on spinning.

And if my talented daughter competing in sprinting can only make a team by doing steroids and testosterone, then I have a concern. Some female athletes won't care about the masculinity effects, others would, so how would the field ever be level? What level do we restrict drug use? Ncaa? High school, junior high. If it's socially acceptable and you know for a fact all your idols are doing it, it will trickle down even more than it already has.

Sports are to Entertain people like Opera, movies, car shows, etc. The Steroids spice it up and make it more exciting, adds Vanity, energy. This is what the audience wants, without it...it would be very boring that's the truth. And I'm not very fond of people taking Juice.
