SPL has been making great gear for voice over for forever. They've been very popular in Germany for broadcasting and voice acting.

I can see why. Well, it is certainly time for SPL to be as popular everywhere as it is there, given what I'm hearing.

Have you tried the GAP Premiere Pre-73 Jr? I think it would definitely be a worth while test against your SPL Pro one and WA that plenty of people would tune in to see! 📺

I have a bunch of SPL kit. The transparency of untreated signals is something else. It also means that when you do apply onboard processing, you really hear it. The various Phonitor headphone amps are also great for fatigue-free extended listening.
@MarkYoshimotoNemcoffАй бұрын
That's really cool. It says a lot when a company understand what the listening experience should be as opposed to "you get what you get". I am really learning now about the premium quality of SPL and it's impressive.

Wow! Would love to hear that flair on some vocals tracks as well!! Great demo! Sounds similar to RND Silk Red and Blue but I think that Flair sounds nicer than Red :)

Right? Yeah, I bet Flair could really add a nice lift to a vocal and help it cut through a mix better.

I have a quick question? If you only have a microphone plugged into the left or one channel, will sound come out of the right or two TRS output or only on the left, when the microphone is plugged into channel One?
@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff28 күн бұрын
It's not a stereo preamp or a stereo output, but instead two mono preamps side by side, each with mono outputs for two mics or a mic and a instrument input. You could certainly use it with two mics set up as a stereo pair, but you'd still have to dial in each mic separately. However, both sides of the Pre One should be very closely matched so it shouldn't be an issue.

Like the sound! Seems though that you may have the pad switch engaged because the gain is up so high. Went to the SPL site and looked over the features, the pads are on the back. How are you monitoring? Doesn't seem to have a headphone out, or does it?
@MarkYoshimotoNemcoffАй бұрын
I had to go and double check. LOL. The pad is not on. I do like to work at high gain because there's a point right at the edge before it all goes to hell that just feels very active and exciting. I'm monitoring through the MT-48 since the Mic Pre One is going into a line input on it and no, the Mic Pre One does not have a headphone jack. And yes, the pad is on the back as a pair of dip switches so it wouldn't be easy to activate it inadvertently.
@davidgbeneke1Ай бұрын
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff Ah Ha! I see your point on gain, like natural saturation! Love your channel!

Are you familiar with HiFiBerry? They have DAC and XLR hats for the raspberry pi. I've been wondering if you can use a raspberry pi for audio recordings in a booth?
@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff27 күн бұрын
I'm not familiar with it. I messed around with Arduino a bit a few years ago, but never got into Rasberry Pi. Sounds interesting though. Let me know if you tinker with it and get something going.

Hi Mark, Sounds great! Have you tried the Cranbourne Camden EC1? Cheers.
@MarkYoshimotoNemcoffАй бұрын
I have a Camden 500, but I have not heard the EC1. I believe they are the same circuit, but the EC1 has more headroom running on a 24v rail.

Excellent feature!
@MarkYoshimotoNemcoffАй бұрын
Right? The more I use it, the more useful I find it to be.
@DracomiesАй бұрын
That's a tough pricepoint though at nearly $600. It's getting closer in price to the Apollo Twin. Also the Volt One at $199 has the Vintage mode which can also kinda do this too though I'd argue swapping to a darker/warmer mic ie Blue Bottle could do the trick as well.
@MarkYoshimotoNemcoffАй бұрын
So, instead of using a higher quality all discrete analog preamp, I have to swap mics every time I want that, or swap into a mode on a prosumer device with inferior specs and runs off a one-size-fits all chipset or buy into a dying ecosystem that has no future path? I don't know. That sounds like a compromise, not an improvement. I'd love to see if if you want to demo your solution and show me because I don't see it. Maybe I'm wrong, but from my perspective, if you're serious about the craft, $300 per preamp for a matched pair of this quality, with this feature, feels like a bargain.
@DracomiesАй бұрын
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff To be fair, it seems like the high pass filter was on throughout the entire video. My opinion might change if it were turned off, but with both the high pass filter and bright mode enabled, the overall brightness was quite noticeable.

@MarkYoshimotoNemcoffАй бұрын
Yes. Everything is metal except the two gain knobs.

Does it have a noise gate? Any recommendations for a gate if not?
@MarkYoshimotoNemcoffАй бұрын
It does not. I'm using the on board gate on the Neumann MT-48, line in on one of the channels, so I currently do not have an alternate recommendation for a gate, but perhaps someone else would like to comment here on a good one.

Mic Doc, thanks for the video! Do I need the tool If I have prism sound lyra 2 which has really transparent preamps?
@MarkYoshimotoNemcoffАй бұрын
If you like what you're getting from what you have, there is no need to get anything else, but if you desire the functionality of this preamp as a tool to get more expression from your performances, then it's always well worth taking a look.

does this work with Apollo twin x duo without having the Apollo change the signal?
@MarkYoshimotoNemcoffАй бұрын
Can you replicate this on an Apollo Twin? Possibly, but one of the issues I found with the Apollo for VO is that I don't think its signal path, which includes going from A to D to A just to process your plug ins, sounds as good as pure analog for voice over. In music, you can hide the smeary lows, but when your living depends upon delivering the best naked audio tracks, I just didn't find parity with the Apollo though I tried for years. Could you take the Mic Pre One and run it into a Line in on the Apollo and use it's functionality? Yeah, that you can do easy.
@godfrey_kayanjaАй бұрын
The Apollo twin x duo seems to only have Line z input for instruments and no dedicated line input. I will have to look into this pre amp, it sounds good listening it from the car speakers. Thank you for the prompt reply.
@TheRecordistАй бұрын
@@godfrey_kayanja The XLR ins on the back of your Twin X also accept TRS 1/4 cables. When you take the gain on that channel down to zero, it is creating a virtual line in. But, it does pass through the preamps. UA says it imparts no change on incoming line level signals, but I disagree. So I use an Arturia AudioFuse X8 IN though the ADAT-IN port on the Apollo for external preamps.
@robflores5172Ай бұрын
But how would it be for music?
@MarkYoshimotoNemcoffАй бұрын
As music is no longer in my purview, only voice over, I would hazard a guess that the higher quality demands for VO would mean the Mic Pre One would slay like a MF on any music project. I'm fairly certain there will be music-related reviews of it coming soon since it's a brand new product.
@HectagonistАй бұрын
Mark, I think you kinda buried the lead with this one because this is a LOT of mic pre for $300 a channel. In a vacuum, I actually prefer this to the Skulptor. Default sound is natural, balanced, smooth, and does that clean sound without getting at all clinical. Though I feel the Skulptor would have more authority in cutting through a mix.
@MarkYoshimotoNemcoffАй бұрын
Good point! I think the very attractive price point deserves an earlier mention in the next video for sure. As to which is better? Hmmmm... that is still a mystery.
