what really sucks is that as you said, this film features Hattie McDaniel, the first black person to win an Oscar for her role in Gone With the Wind. By suppressing this movie, not only are they suppressing black history (which is American history), they are suppressing Hattie's legacy and contributions to this world. As a disney cast member and someone who has always adored Princess and the Frog -- I'm thoroughly pissed. Splash Mountain has always been one of my favorite rides, and Tiana is one of my favorite Princesses. This is literally just tokenizing her. This ride has never been problematic before, and suddenly during the 2020 riots, Disney comes forward with this announcement. This is not saying "wow, Tiana is such a hardworking and inspiring princess, we want to honor her and her message!" No, it says "look at her, she's black. Aren't we so great? Don't you love us for this change? We are heros." Tiana deserves better. Not to mention, erasing Uncle Remus and his incredible stories is a form of erasing African stories. (And James Baskett got an honorary Oscar for his performance which is historic!!!) So Disney: screw you. We see through you.

I saw this film in the UK as a young white boy, it was probably my first introduction to a person of colour on screen. My reaction was that for years I dreamt of having a friend like uncle Ramus. In short it was the greatest influence on my childhood to be completely accepting of other humans who might look different. The whole film was a wonderful representation of love and innocence. I'm so sick of this race baiting. :( 😞

I was born in 1982 and they had re-released it briefly in theatres in the early 80s…never thought about anything racist or bad about it. It’s a beautiful story about a kind friendship that actually should be shown as a good thing that they were friends bc of kindness and not that they looked different. It was controversial at the time, you just weren’t aware of it because of your age. The movie was based on a collection of slave stories and there were plenty of people who didn’t like how the movie framed it as a series of lessons for a wealthy white kid. Also the black kid in it is just a minstrel stereotype, much number than the white kids to the point where he is constantly falling on his face when he tries to run as a gag. There’s a reason Disney hasn’t released it sense.

I remember watching parts of this film as a kid.😡 I remember it being one of the most magical things I'd ever seen. "Mr. Bluebird's on my shoulder...". Beautiful and classic. Why is Disney so cucked?! If at all it has racist themes, I'm sure you'd have to go looking for them? Uncle remus is a beloved lovely character. This film makes light of the suffering and horror of slavery by depicting uncle Remus as a willing participant in the film. Belle consented to her imprisonment, Remus was purchased. How an actor feels about playing that character is irrelevant. And besides Casting directors pick who they think would be the best choice to "be" that character. As a Disney Parks fan, I have to say your take here is pretty on point for someone who has just researched the topic. Even though you’re reading the false leftist narratives surrounding Splash Mountain and Song of the South for the first time, you do an excellent job of calling them out. Honestly, Disney is about to make one of the biggest mistakes in their history by closing Splash Mountain. Not just because it’s an excellent attraction, but because they’re doing so in the name of false ideologically driven narratives that seek to tarnish the legacies of actual African American folklore, trailblazing black actors and even Walt Disney himself. Unfortunately, the ideologues have tightened their grip on Disney with Bob Iger’s return and there is no Elon in sight willing to save this once great company from what it’s become. As a 16 year old who has gone to Disney World and Land more times than I can count, this makes me pretty mad. It's been rumored for a long while now but I honestly really didn't expect them to actually do it. Splash Mountain is such a classic. Disney was much better when I was younger. They had the Great Movie Ride, I didn't know what woke meant, they had just one day for sodomists rather than the whole year, etc. etc.. I can't believe Disney has fallen so far.

As much as I hate the retheming, this was planned long LONG AGO. But Disney didn't have a good enough excuse to do it. So during the Summer of Love of 2020, they took advantage of all the BLM hysteria and to announce the retheming, and pretend it was them being "good allies" bla bla bla. As for Song of the South... I have the VHS. Me, being European, never saw the issue with the film. It was pretty boring actually. What I know is that the erasure of this film (based on popular black folktales apparently) also erases the accomplishment of its main actor - a black man. Which seems more racist than the film itself to me.

I’m born and raised southern, and I grew up on Disney licensed books with the stories of Brer Rabbit and all the rest. I remember story time at VBS when I was really young, and the woman read the book with all the voices. It really brought it to life for me. I didn’t know it was based on a movie, and at that age I certainly didn’t think there was anything racist about it. They were just fun, imaginative stories, and that book in particular was the highlight of any story time.

I am kind of confused about your point, but not everything from our past has to be about how racist some people in it were. Now I could say that if you want to go there, then every one of those movies needs to be explicit that the Democrat party was the party of slavery and racism. But fact is no, not all movies have to be about it. Thats like saying every movie about Africa needs to remind us how racist Africans are and that they still have slavery. But nobody at all would suggest that. Or every movie about the Asians has to say the same thing because yes, they are even more racist than we were back then, and they still have slavery. Again, nobody would say that. There are bad things about human history by todays standards, and there are good things. You dont have to mention the bad things every time you mention good things. Honestly, I know next to nothing about the Disney parks and I thought they already did this years ago. I heard talk of it. Was never allowed to watch Princess in the Frog because of "Voodoo", but I watched Song of the South a bunch of times. Nothing wrong with it. It always seemed sweet. Uncle Remus seemed like a cool grandpa/dad type who told stories. I'd have to rewatch it of course, I'm sure there were some things that didn't age very well, but that's the truth with most older movies.

My father read me the Uncle Remus Stories throughout my whole childhood (I'm 27). I never had a single racist thought pass through my mind through these stories, nor did my father ever express any racism through his reading of these beautiful stories to me as a child. I, and my father, only ever thought of Uncle Remus as a loving, creative, and truly loving man through these stories, and I still see them that way. I love you, Uncle Remus and Br'er Rabbit! I have a few not so popular opinions. As a die-hard fan of The Princess and the Frog, I am happy it's getting more recognition through the new theming. On the other hand, I do understand the backlash behind changing the theme when it's one of the few things we have of Song of the South. I know there's a lot of unfortunate implications in that film, but I also believe that denying what happened in history only does more harm than good.

The only good thing about re-theming the ride instead of making Tiana a new one is the old rides never break down! However the new animatronics they’ll add will probably negate this advantage… so, keep Splash and give Tiana something new! (However, the current Splash animatronics at Disneyland CA need an overhaul anyway) Also, Disneyland’s, CA, Splash is also slated for closure on a undisclosed date.

Song of the South was always my dad’s favorite Disney movie growing up (he was born 1960), and he made sure we all watched it as kids. I think I was like 8 or something when he bought me a pirated dvd copy for my birthday 😂 I’ve always loved the film because it was a special bond I had with my dad.

This is a huge problem that even happened with "Encanto" and now "Wednesday" on Netflix: their theories are canon, no questions asked. With SOTS, it was that Remus was definitely talking about slavery. In "Encanto", it's that Luisa is trans and Delores is autistic. In "Wednesday", it's that Wednesday is autistic and she's being idolized as a demonized autistic person. None of these are ever canon in the films. They are never even *explicitly* implied. These are all fan THEORIES that are pushed forward as fact, and God forbid you disagree with them. I'm not gonna feel guilty for not agreeing with a theory.

I don't know about Wednesday because if you know about the dark comedy the franchise always uses, but parts of the show has been directed by Tim Burton, so that explaines a lot. Since Disney lockes away it's movies behind pay walls (Disney+) i don't know 100% about Delores but i see what you mean, she is a character of her own! i have a stronger feeling with Dory from 'Finding Nemo' & 'Finding Dory'

I seen song of the south. It's not racist. It's kind of boring but it has a lot of historical value. In fact the actors enjoyed being in the film. The little boy is also the voice of Peter Pan btw. Also it tells actual black folktales. As much as I like the princess & the frog, it is based on a European fairytale where song of the south has original black stories in it. Something disney no longer does apparently.

I remember a while ago when this was announced (some of my family and friends work with Disney for travel) and before we even knew how it was being re-themed, it was known that it was being done because Splash Mountain was centered around a "racist story." A few months later, we found out it was being transformed into a Princess and the Frog-themed ride. As someone who has been to Disney a ton, I can guarantee that absolutely no one of any age or race standing in line for that ride is thinking about how the story is racist. We all just want to ride for the sake of entertainment.

We used to watch The Song of The South when I was in elementary school back in the 90's. I grew up in a very racially balanced county right outside Washington DC. Actually, at that time, the county I lived in had the richest population of black Americans in any county in the United States... And nobody found it racist. Our music teacher was an old black lady and half my class was black. We all loved that movie... What changed? Why is it racist now?

That’s part of the problem-the dishonest portrayal of the happy Black Sambo caricature. Neither slavery, nor The Reconstruction Era were a time of jubilee for the enslaved African captive. That’s where the issue lies-viewing the conditions and realities of this era with rose colored glasses. Very misrepresentative. I’m almost certain that if there were a Disney ride with “historical” reference to the Holocaust or misrepresented the harsh realities that “Jews” faced, and Disney disbanded it, no one would bat an eye. The selective outrage is outrageous.
