I'm sure you get this question a lot. But I'm having trouble blending colors in photoshop when I paint. (it gets kinda stroky and not a smooth blend) Are there any things you recommend doing? Tutorials on blending in photoshop? or is it just something that gets better over time?
@mrdoolio4 жыл бұрын
Photoshop doesn't have that natural blending and yes, it's kind of an issue, though you get used to it with time. But, sadly, it's something that the program itself lacks, so you have to find ways around it. You can mitigate the "duct tape" painting by using custom brushes to a degree, for example - note that this doesn't change the lack of engine/script/code/whatever within the program, so it's basically a... duct tape solution:) Brushes that act more friendly when used to painting merely mitigate the effect, there still isn't any actual blending going on. Another way is to use an additional step, which is to use the smudge tool. This can, well, smudge colors, emulating blending to a decent degree. The downside is, of course, that it's an additional step and not exactly intuitive or free flowing as if you would have painted it traditionally. The reasons for this can be found in the fact that Photoshop is, well, photo-shop more than a painting tool. And, while it's being popularized as such and is being used all over the industry as a standard, it's lacking in certain areas, such as blending. Earlier, when people wanted a more painterly approach, they turned to Corel Painter. Which isn't an idea solution either. But, in the last 10-15 years, this hole regarding drawing/painting software has pretty much been filled by alternative programs, which you can use, be it to use them instead of Photoshop or in addition to Photoshop (the best option). So, you can use, say, Clip Studio Paint for painting and drawing purposes and then open the same psd file in Photoshop and do filters, color corrections and effects, for example. This is a good combo, since Photoshop has beastly options for tweaking images, while Clip Studio has natural blending, good brushes and more ergonomic, quicker and smoother visual manipulation of your workspace (for example, flipping, rotating, zooming etc, are all quicker and cozier in Clip). You have a number of other programs that do these things well enough. On the other side, Clip Studio Paint would be horrible for photobashing, wacky layer work etc. So, branch out a bit, all those programs support psd files and can be used with one another in order to offer the "full service". In the past 20 years or so, Artists who use Photoshop have noticed and talked about the lack of good blending while painting and it hasn't been addressed yet. So, I think it's safe to assume that Photoshop is simply a bureaucratic juggernaut of a program with many structures being tweaked over the decades, but the core structure doesn't seem to change. So, if it's not possible to implement blending as such in Photoshop without overhauling it completely, I think we shouldn't expect it any time soon. I mean, Paint Tool SAI has good blending, embeded into brushwork and that program is, like 10 megabytes? So, it's safe to say they can't do it until they build some new version of PS from scratch. Until then, you will have to blend using "a high number of duct tapes in order to mask transitions between them to the eye" or using additional tools and steps (smudge).

I often wonder during the champion load screen before a match, do your splash artists use a tool (like a series of crop frames) that assist in previewing the crops for character portraits, the loading screen cards, ect. The compositional layout in each champion card on the load screen looks perfect, is someone tweaking the splash art afterwards to format those cards?
@efemji Жыл бұрын
i believe they do, but i never really seen it in public. probably something similliar like Legends of runeterra splasharts, you can see it in artstation and usually artist works with a little bit of knowledge of photography, mostly rule of third, so they can always adjust the focus of the character either in the middle or the sides, and there's also some kind of trick they do to do less and more consistent and efficient, If you see splash arts, the more focus drawn off the character the less detail you see, even though sometimes it's still is, most of the time they use the help of photoshop tools to make it believable with less painting. So even if the artist didn't crop to preview, other can just adjust it without the help of the artists
