The Auto gain is the best feature of the rode one, it’s such a pain to always change the gain input on the DJI microphones😖I used both and I have to say that the rode is a live saver with auto gain. Plus the Internal recording you often don’t have to use, I think the rode with the better audio is a clear winner cause it is more time saving and that is all you need on set

Thanks Sam for the great review. In contrast to many others, you are looking for practicality in everyday life. So that's what we're all about in the end. And I see everything the same as you. I sent the Rode back and got the DJI set and I'm very happy with it. I even love the sound more. The Rode sounds better at first because it has a boost in the low mids, which makes the sound a little warmer. The DJI sounds slimmer and a little brighter in this regard. But when you use the Rode for a mix with Atmos and especially music, I noticed that I turn down exactly these mids because they often "clash" with the identical frequency responses in the music, e.g.

Always really enjoyed and learned from your stellar videos. Big thumbs up. Allow me, however, to add a couple notes on this one. ONE: the RODE sounds better in every test I've heard - significantly so. Hard to imagine that better sound would be worth just one or even ten pizza slices. For some of us it is everything. TWO: You claim the DJI turns off when the camera turns off but not the RODE, yet I use the RODE with that feature too. THREE: Seems like transmission is better in the DJI - which I tend to agree with - but I haven't been able to match your poor results on the RODE. Still, they both have 32 bit local recording to the transmitter so these extreme distance tests are mitigated by onboard 32 bit recording. And this local recording is what everyone should be using regardless of how they use the transmitter. The 32 bit recording will be far better than anything brought in by your camera from the transmitter (as the audio in the camera will have been transmitted, flipped from digital to audio and then back again in the camera, adding noise). And it is trivial to align these 32 bit recordings in DaVinci. So once again if audio quality is king - and for many of us it is - most of these pizza slices don't apply. I would never use noise reduction in my wireless system when I can control that in post. And most of those cool menu features in DJI just don't apply to real life. Further, while I like the DJI attachment for the dead cat, some might prefer the more complex attachment on the RODE because it is now locked in and can't come off, much more secure. Obviously no point in commenting on all the things you nailed here, which are many. Thanks again.

Rode Wireless Pro now selling for $349.00. It’s like paying $149 for the set if you consider the Rode lav mics alone are almost $100 each.
@FrazerGoddon10 ай бұрын
Just bought the Rode Pro for £350. I almost cancelled the order to buy the DJI Wireless 2. The thing that keeps me is the included mics and the fact that they lock to the unit. Something that my Sennheiser ew G4 does. I was toying with just buying another G4. The bit thqt got me intereated was Timecode. That would save so much time though it will be interesting to see how this works when pulling it from the device. I use a B and C cam and matching the voice can be a royal pain. You make a ton of quality of life points and I'm really impressed with the DJI design. My dad has the first version of that system that he uses with his drone.
@ericmoorecowbell4 ай бұрын
Yeah I was thinking that if you pitted the Sennheiser ew G4 against the DJI Mic 2 in a similar contest the G4 would lose in this format. The G4 is not easy/simple to use, but the audio quality of the G4 is far superior to the DJI Mic 2. So IDK if this is the best comparison format.

Awesome review as always Curtis. One thing you didn’t mention (something everyone misses, annoyingly) is that Rode gear is made in Australia, not China or elsewhere in the Far East. Rode also have a fantastic reputation for after sales support, and have so for decades. I had a seven year old NT1A that died one day, they replaced the capsule free of charge save for the $11 postage to them. Mic came back with extra bands for the suspension mount too. A mate had their near-decade old mic repaired and it came back in new, updated case for it.

I haven't seen a comment on this feature the RODE's have that is important for podcasters, KZbinrs and streamers. You gave a pizza slice to the DJI Mic 2 because it can be used with the Osmo Action 4 or Pocket 3 cameras. The RODECaster Pro II, RODECaster Duo and RODE Streamer X all have built in receivers for all of the RODE Wireless microphones. This is a major bonus if you do any social media content. For the record, I have a set of Sennheiser ew G4s that I will use for one subject interviews and mission critical sound, but plan on getting both the RODE Wireless Pro and the DJI Mic 2 for use in different situations and respective products each company makes.
@pedromarquez11410 ай бұрын
For me if it doesn’t have a locking mechanism for the lav mic every other little pizza slice becomes kind of useless. I pay that premium price for the quality of sound and for the product to make my life easier, I don’t want to be worrying about the lav mic disconnecting. You can do as many little tricks as you want but sooner or later that cable will get disconnected. I think that if you are making professional work that require a lav mic go for the rode. If you don’t need a lav mic go for the dji.
@GrantSRАй бұрын
Great video but..... What about the workflow? You said you were going to talk about the workflow! I want to know how they compare AFTER you have made the recordings. How you get the audio off of the devices. Do they record the two separate microphones to two different channels? Or do they always mix the audio so you can't edit them separately in post production? How do we actually record that 32-bit digital audio, and have it in a file that we can actually use? If we plug the audio jacks into cameras, then the camera is only recording analog audio again, and it does so at whatever bitrate that the camera itself is capable of. Do we have to plug the receiver into a smartphone or laptop, via USB-C, and record that 32-bit signal that way? Or is that ALSO actually analog, so the final, usable bitrate is totally depending upon the final recording device? WE NEED WAY MORE INFO!!! 🤣🤣🤣

I was hoping to learn which one is better when transferring the internal recording to a computer. I heard that some Röde models need special software to do that, only supported on certain computers. Is the DJI a disk drive when connecting to any computer? That would be much better as you don't need special software that might get outdated after a while. Also, using the receiver USB cable to interface directly to computer or phone would have been interesting - if using for live streaming, is there latency?
