Once you set up Rode with autogain you don’t really need to change anything more. Also it connects wireless to the Rodecaster Pro 2. It’s also a pro that Rode charging case acts a hub for both the receiver and the two transmitters. One cable to update the firmware on everything, and transfer audio from both the transmitters. And finally the audio on the Rode is better in my opinion, so Rode is the best system for me.

Hi, awesome video! One question, since you can record it as USB mic with transmitters in the case. Does this means that even if the battery on them them dies eventually, they won't go completely useless. Is there a way to check or confirm that?
@tombuck
@tombuck 2 күн бұрын
Yep, that's an issue with systems like this. Each company has its own policy on how they handle it. In general, you should be able to get 3-5 years out of them. Rode is the only company that has specifically said they'll replace dead batteries when the time comes.
@Satcamp
@Satcamp 2 күн бұрын
@@tombuck Thanks, yeah also loved the video where you talk about this issue in detail but can you check if sennheiser wireless designs solves the problem at least partially. I checked dji transmitter, that did not record while being charged. But it seems that since sennheiser wireless can record while in the charging case when connected via USB, but is it also being charged simultaneously? So in short even if transmitter batteries dies in 3-5 years, it is still usable as USB mic when plugged in. Would love to know if that's true.

If you use lavalier mics all the time, get the Rode. If you use your mics like a handheld mic, get the Sennheiser. If you are out in the rain a lot, get the Saramonic. If you have a DJI Action 4 or 5 or an Osmo Pocket 3, get the DJI Mic 2 (if you need internal recording) or the new DJI Mic Mini (if you don't).

Thanks Tom, for this excellent review. I was looking for an in-depth comparison of these four, and this delivered. You did overlook a couple of features of the Saramonic. It has timecode, which is a little niche, but can be very useful (especially if you want to use the internal recorder separate from the receiver). Also, on paper (if we can trust the accuracies of these things), the Saramonic has both a higher SPL of 130 (vs 120-ish), and a lower noise floor. 32-bit float is only as good as the mic that captures the signal so it's not insignificant. Saramonic does have a history of copying other physical designs (I had their original wireless system that was a physical copy of Sony... right down to the color choices), but they threw the kitchen sink of "best features" into the Ultras in a way that the others didn't. (With your voice-- on my speakers-- I did prefer the DJI sound, though.)
@tombuck
@tombuck 10 күн бұрын
Glad you liked the video overall! To be honest I’m pretty unimpressed with the Saramonic. It’s a big reason I tend to stay away from leaning too much in tech specs in comparisons. There were a lot of early reviews praising it, which kind of confused me. But I wanted to include it here without too much of my own opinions so people could make up other own minds since, feature-wise, it does offer a lot for the price.

I was initially interested in Sennheiser products, but when I learned that it was only 24-bit, I gave up decisively. DJI's products are good, but its cold shoe design is really hard to describe. I sold it after using it. I also used hollyland's product (in China, it's called MOMA). On a very important event, it disconnected and lost its pairing status. It was very frustrating and I sold it. I also have used uwmic9s, a Saramonic product, but the signal was unstable and the size was large, so I sold it anyway. In the end, the only product left in my hands was RODE's product wireless pro, which was very reliable and easy to use.

They definitely work well for talking head videos! Especially if you don't have a super well sound treated space. If you're using a 3.5mm cable, then yes you do need to set your camera's gain too. It's usually a good idea to keep the camera's gain super low, like just a few notches from the bottom, and then adjust levels with the mic.

Hi Tom. Many thanks for this (wireless) multi-mic comparison - it's always handy to know what's new, how they compare and the pros/cons. About 2 years ago I purchased the Rode Wireless GoII (without a charger case) + a couple of Videomic GoII's & Lavalier Go's (as stand-alone, on camera or for connecting to Atem mini / RodeCaster ProII). I'm simply an amateur AV guy who also does some PA+ @ church. But now I see Rode have launched their (multi-coloured) "Gen 3" system with all the bells & whistles and of course they have the Pro series and ME series. Does this change your thoughts & recommendations for the 2.4ghz range now?

Im tired of these cheap systems already (i own the dji). Sure these have a lot of features, but these systems are a pain to use everyday. They have small buttons, are a pain to power on and off, have cheap built quality, don't have replaceable batteries, the built in mics don't sound good, they have a lot of self noise, like a LOT of self noise, and you can't use pro microphones on some of them, and you can't connect them via xlr to get 24bit audio through and xlr input on sony and other cameras. I guess these are good if you're using them once a month or something for fun, but there's no comparison to a pro system in terms of actually using them on a daily basis. If you're using them to make a living in any capacity buy once cry once. You'll save time and money in the long run with a pro system. Not trying to be negative, just some input from actuality trying to use these consumer grade products eyeryday. Good video though, I always appreciate your content 👍
@tombuck
@tombuck Ай бұрын
Definitely if you're looking for pro quality, the limit gets reached pretty quickly. But I do think that these systems have a lot of value for newer or casual users just looking to up their audio or use an external mic for the first time (or experienced users who know and are ok with the limitations).

Great video - as always - Tom!! Question: I definitely get you point about the size of the Røde Wireless Pro mics, but since you get lavalier mics included, then you have the option to just the small lav mics instead of the the big square "eye-sores". My question in that regard: How does the sound quality from the lav-mics sound to you compared to just using the mic itself without the lav-mics? Is the sound from the lav-mics still better than from the DJI Mic II?

It depends on which lab you use. Most of the ones from Rode/DJI/Sennheiser/etc will all sound great. Even some of the super budget Amazon ones can work very well (but some can also sound hideous so it's a bit of a crap shoot). It's not the cheapest, but the Sennheiser Essential Omni is my favorite lav. I've mixed it with regular dynamic mics and it sounds awesome.

If I explain what you mean by legal issue that you don't understand for UHF microphones. In Europe we have had a transformation of the radio frequency transmission system with the introduction of DVB-T digital television broadcasts and the new telephony transmission bands from the old GSM to the new G-class (2G, 3G, 4G and the current 5G) which led to a reinterpretation of the frequency spectrum previously occupied by different users such as old television broadcasters, music radio broadcasters, military, police forces, firefighters, naval, airplanes and also an assigned spectrum for ENG radio microphones, musical concerts, theatrical and entertainment shows such as discos or piano bars, broacasters TV (like BBC, CNN, etc). These radio microphones had a 470-874 MHz band that was occupied for DVB-T therefore these "short range" devices such as radio microphones have been declared outlawed. So radio microphone manufacturers had to build new devices with other frequencies on 863-865 MHz bands. The same thing happened to you in America. The old UHF radiomicrophones still work but for that operating frequency band it interferes with that of other users (who can be police or for air traffic or who else). That's why they were outlawed.

Love this deep-dive. Been a big push recently for 32-bit float recording in these new dual-transmitter wireless systems, but like with all videography/audio equipment, it all comes down to what works best for you. I use the Sennheiser XSW-D as my main wireless system, and I love it. Obviously it's been out way longer, and it doesn't have all the bells and whistles like these systems do, but it gets the job done.

Happy Thanksgiving! I actually ended up ordering the Hollyland because I’m so curious about it, but since it doesn’t have built in recording or some of the more robust features these systems do it didn’t seem like it fit in here.

Haha, I would love to try those out! I actually got a sneak peak of the Rode back when they were releasing the Rodecaster Video and the form factor is so awesome. I haven't gotten to use it myself though (and I think it's limited to phones/computers?). The DJI seems like a bit of an upgrade since it's not much more expensive and can also work with cameras. But the Hollyland can do all of that for $25-$50 cheaper, so it seems tough to beat! I found it on a Black Friday sale so it should be here in a few days.

Another well done comparison video. All four systems seen to be great for what I do. I’ve been using the Rode Wireless Go for several years using a lavalier mic. While I like it I realize that someday the batteries are going to stop holding a charge. I’m holding off considering a replacement until hopefully someone will make a good system with replaceable batteries. To me that’s a critical flaw in all the current choices.
@tombuck
@tombuck Ай бұрын
My original Rode Wireless from 2019 still lasts almost as long as when it was new, so even though non-replaceable batteries are a bummer, they do have quite a lifespan! I did have a Deity system die really quickly, but I think Rode/DJI/Sennheiser use much higher quality batteries that last longer.

Great Review Tom! It’s a simple decision for me, I’ll take anything that will wirelessly connect to my Sony cameras. 😮 but if they all start releasing adapters oh man…..then I’m probably going with the sennheiser because those sound super crisp. 32 bit float is great but in real world use I can’t think of any situation I’d be in that the sennheiser dual record won’t do the trick! Would love to see a super high end competitor enter this market like $800 pro setup but in this form factor.!🙏🥹

I have the Rode system and I love the sound quality and ease of use, also very reliable. As for clipping the ‘big clunky’ transmitter to your chest, you can do that in a pinch but you’re really supposed to use the included lav mics which are excellent. Hide the cable under your sweater and Bob’s your uncle! The transmitters have a clip to attach to your belt or waist just like they do on a real TV broadcast ! 😜 (where I worked as a producer for 43 years) Love your videos though for sure!!

Its a choice indeed. I like Røde for the lavaliers. That's a big one for me, because I actually find the mics clipped on/visible to be disturbing/annoying (personal preference). But I do like the DJI and all its interconnectedness etc. But then Sennheiser is very cool and innovative, and I find that attractive. But now I just saw there is a new DJI Mic Mini which also grabs my attention... I am looking forward to your review of those! Keep on crushing, Tom!

So many choices! At the end of the day, it's really tough to go wrong so even the criticisms are splitting hairs. The Mic Mini looks like a good choice if you don't need internal recording or the ability to attach a lav mic. Hollyland and Comica have had affordable options for a while, but I'm glad to see Rode and DJI make some more budget-friendly systems too.

You might verbally be the best reviewer out there, and as presenter in this competitive world you are joy to watch… but in this case I missed a direct sound comparison between the systems. Now if only the branding and reflectivity is left off the side of the transmitters! Please! Have you seen the Rode videos where the mic on the lady is flashing studio lights into the camera? The mic is photo-bombing the shot! And WHY WHY WHY would you want a mic with advertising on its side that draws the eye to itself? My perfect wireless system mic would be flat-black, internal recording and Float-32. Wireless mics that are truly professional are all flat-black!

Not always: if audio quality is «best» but it’s a hassle to use, lacks certain features one wants or needs etc choosing the second best if the audio quality is «good enough» on the second best or third best option is a valid choice - and price also plays into this. +1 for the DJI Mic, I also found the audio quality increased noticeably when I used the DJI lavalier, especially after turning on 32 bit and turning off the noise cancelling and low cut filter (which were on by default for some reason?). Also I used to work for a company that would essentially license entire pieces of hardware to other brands, and what you got looked a lot like the Saramonic vs. the DJI, like they just changed a couple things and put a different sticker on it 🤷
