Splatoon is a shooter game defined by its wide variety of unique weapons, allowing any player to find a weapon that best suits their playstyle. As of the launch of Splatoon 3, we now have 11 of these weapon classes, adding even more options to choose from than ever before. Every single main weapon in the game is paired with a weapon kit, consisting of a sub weapon and special weapon. In this video, I want to talk about Splatoon’s weapon kit design: the good, the bad, and the ugly.

kit design in S2 felt kinda random, but it feels very deliberate in S3 overall. Even questionable kits like Dapple Dualies and Undercover Brella feel like they're trying to fill some kind of niche. I think it would be easier to appreciate kits like these if the elements of each kit served its apparently intended purpose better, i.e. Reefslider not being EXTREMELY vulnerable on both startup and cooldown, or Tacticooler not totally negating Ninja Squid.
@TressaAimuuru
@TressaAimuuru Жыл бұрын
I think Tacticooler negating Ninja Squid is good actually If you were able to gain the super speed provided with Tacticooler, AND also have it hide you when you swim, it'd probably be extremely broken and near impossible to deal with Taking Tacticooler with Ninja Squid is basically making a decision if you want to trade off your stealth for speed

In my experience of going against dapple dualies, the appeal of beacons is that with their mobility, they can place beacons all over the place and in places that can help other frontliners. Since beacons are in places that are hidden in general, it can help dapples catch enemies by surprise.

THIS IS AN AMAZING VIDEO!! I swear, the one thing that bothers me most in this game currently is that EVERY Crab Tank weapon except one has essentially the same range, and all but one are shooters (the remaining being a dualie, which is technically one too). I know there will be some overlap, but that's just ridiculous at this point.

I come from MTG, the card game, and we have a lot of "bad" magic cards. Like, some truly terrible ones. More are made with every new set, sometimes you look at a card and go "why did this ever get made". But there are some good reasons why bad cards exist, and I think they can translate over to weapon kits. Recognizing bad vs good cards is a skill, if you're building a deck then knowing "this card sucks" off the get-go is a skill that you can improve on and use to get better results. This obv maps onto high-level splat play, teams who can easily tell what weapons are going to be good in a patch get an advantage over ones that have to wait and see. Bad cards encourage experimentation. If you see a truly terrible card, there's almost an incentive to try and use it and turn the game on its head. Deciding to play with a "bad kit" just to try and synergize around in and see if you can squeeze out an advantage is fun, and leads to some innovations. Bad cards just have to exist, by the nature of the fact that they're all different. Sometimes the designers just miss the mark. For example, with the hydra splatling, obv splashdown is a bad special and it doesn't fit on it especially if you consider it an aggressive special, but if you imagine it as the devs trying to give a "get off me" tool to a long-range anchor weapon it makes a bit of sense, it just failed at being that.
@EnergyBurst2

Thats kinda how I always felt their idea behind Base Hydra in 2 was, just that splashdown just couldn't do that well enough with the Hydra especially and thus the kit was awful as a result since with the hydra if the rare occasion (which presents its own problem) you actually do have to use the Splashdown does come up and you fail to kill with it, then due to the slow charging nature of the hydra you just kind of can't really retaliate quickly enough and die.

I think the reason why dapple got the beakon twice is cause they want you to rush into enemy bases with your speed and plant them but in reality it just doesn't work, especially since you can see beakons on the map for some reason

There is also a problem with the dapple's kit : You are supposed to flank with them. By using the beacon. But like said, we can see beacon on the map AND you have the worst possible specials to flank with. Literaly THE special you need to use with your team.

The beacon doesn't help the Dapple user themself, but I find that it's really great for their team. I think Dapple players are the best at placing their beacons aggressively because they get in much faster than the other beacob weapons. It's a very odd synergy that works if you play around it, but it's mot what everyone wants to play so I'm glad the Nueveu kit gives it a bomb in Torpedo
@Star-Powder
@Star-Powder Жыл бұрын
I think the idea with the current Dapples kit is that you use the beacons and cooler selfishly. So you place down a beacon and use the cooler buffs to rush the enemy and get a pick or two before dying. The cooler's quick respawn buff and the beacon's jumps allow you to be back in the fight instantly. The problem is that strategy just doesn't work against coordinated teams.

I just want more weapons with Torpedo, honestly. It was the last new sub weapon added in Splatoon 2 so it didn't have the opportunity to make it onto that many kits, but I was hoping with Splatoon 3 that would change... instead it's only on two weapons while Sprinkler made it onto five.

@@Karambolage17 torpedo is actually pretty good. It instantly eclocates a enemy in an area you through it at, and while it can be broken, if you through it their left, right, or behind them, they have to choose between either taking out the torpedo (where you kill them), trying to deal with you (where the torpedo kills them) or they have to pull back and the torpedo blows up inking a ton of space. And you can roll it too, so it also acts as a combo tool. It's basically a more flexible version of the autobomb.

Note on the Krak-On roller: It was actually given that name originally due to it having the kraken, as we all know splatoon devs love their puns. It was presumably given baller in 2 as that was the closest thing (having a temporary armoured transformation while still being able to move around and jump freely). When you talk about the sloshed deco’s previous kits, you literally mention how it would fit to give it reefslider as it fits with its previous kits of kraken and baller, so your logic lines up with mine as well. Because if this, I think it’s very likely it’ll get the reef slider, as not only does it fit the temporary armoured transformation part, but it’s also a shark, which is as close to a kraken as you can get in 3. Also of course Pro got a sub it’s never had before, angle marker (yes I’m calling it that) literally didn’t exist in 2 Also also I think while generally a good rule, rule number two should sometimes be broken as it can give the same main weapon a completely different playstyle with both kits still remaining good, as they cover completely different areas. Also also also I don’t feel rule number three is right, a weapon shouldn’t be on par with another weapon just because it’s kit is better even though the main weapon is worse. The main weapons should still be balanced equally outside of their kits.

i feel hydra with splashdown always sorta made sense. splashdown isnt meant to be aggressive in the hands of hydra, its a panic button when someone flanks your team and goes after the anchor. is it a GOOD panic button? no. not at all. but its better than other specials. hydra got booyah in splatoon 3 because its also a panic button.

I always felt like the dapple had an "infiltrator" kit, where you can sneak behind and place down a beacon, then have your team all jump in, drop the tentacooler and sort of have a "paratrooper behind enemy lines blitzkrieg" moment. It was very optimistic of the devs if they planned for that kind of thing to happen, but maybe it's really fun if you're playing with people in a call. In my opinion, not all weapons need to be made to win: if I could pull that play off once I feel like it would have been fun enough to vindicate dapple dualies kit. Like the "run around menacing" kit on krak-on, sometimes kits just have to allow the player to do or be something wacky. Like if they gave the splatana stamper inkmine, you could play as a jump-scaring guerrilla warfare fighter, hiding around your mines until someone blows one up giving you the chance to pop out and go full sushi chef on the poor soul. These sort of kits that let you do a very specific thing create challenges to make them work in a fun and unique way, to the point where even if you lose, as long as you managed to do the funny thing you were trying to, it doesn't really matter. I think kits that are "jokes" have a place when you just wanna play for jokes. If every kit was competitively viable, sure competitive would be great and dandy but I feel like the "regular" game would become stale. I may be biased since I play a lot of TF2, which enabled players to do wacky shit like demoknight and combat medic (which are definitely not playing to win classes), but I still stand by my view.

I think beacon and tacticooler works very well because it pushes the aggresive playstyle und isnt very punishing if you actally die. Not having a bomb to pocke might be an issue but because it can also fit an supportive playstyle, it doesnt 100 percent need it. And the kit is very fun to.

While I do agree the beacons work wonders for Dapples, subverting the ways Splatoon 3 maps gives preference to back-line weapons, my personal problem is the tacticooler. Dappled rely heavily on sharking and ambushing to get kills, and the fact that the tc buff negates ninja squid or even sneak swimming only hurts the weapon. Beyond that, dapples playstyle almost requires solitary and risky game play, reliant on flanks and trades (with its range). Slapping on a support special just feels painful.
@Flygoniaks
@Flygoniaks Жыл бұрын
One thing you forgot to mention, is that if a particular kit ends up being too weak or too strong, the devs will attempt to balance things, buffing/nerfing _that specific kit_ slightly by changing the number of points needed to charge its special. So even normally useless kits might have the trait of being able to spam specials. I think a lot of newcomers might not know this! I ultimately think that having pre-set kits will be healthier for Splatoon than allowing us to design our own loadouts, partly because it's easier to balance, and partly for another reason. Mainly, if we were allowed to choose our exact combination of main, sub, and special weapon, players would start _min-maxing,_ saying "if you're playing _this_ main weapon, _this_ sub and special are optimal, and _anything else_ is a detriment." It would likely make competitive a lot more _boring_ as lots of subs/specials wouldn't even be used, and it might even make the community a bit more toxic? I suspect that a (very small) portion of players would get angry at others for playing loadouts that don't fit into the "meta" team compositions, since now it's a matter of player choice.

10:30 I don’t know if I 100% agree with this because Krak-On Roller was very popular in both of the previous games due to having Squid Beakons, so there is a reason the devs have tried to put them on other aggressive slayer weapons. I think the weapons other than Splat Roller they chose for giving them were not good, but if instead of Dapple Dualies they were on Splat Dualies or instead of Octobrush they were on Ink Brush, weapons that have more mobility on enemy ink (Splat Dualies because they paint better so they have less trouble approaching and Ink Brush because of its inherent Ink Resistance while pushing) would allow you to place Beakons down in good strategic locations

Another fantastic video, well done! I hope the points made here are things the devs are considering. It sounds like there were a lot of "wasted" or at least redundant lots in Splatoon 2, and I hope they get more original with 3. They already added the new weapon classes of stringer and splatana, so hopefully that's a good sign. Additionally, I hope they switch up the brands a bit too, add in some different versions of variants, and like you express hope for in this video, put some real thought into some of the future kits. I am most excited for a new stringer, and I thi k your idea would be brilliant! Variants of the current two with different kits could be great, but I'm hoping for some new weapon styles overall. I thought of a neat stringer style - maybe something that fires one arrow, and on the first charge it's very much a charger-style shot (long-range, no arc, one-hit potential). Then if you charge to a second charge level, you get a shot you can arch that behaves like an explosher and explodes on contact, maybe doing a little less damage this way (like the explosher vs. charger). I'd love for it to have the point sensor, or torpedo, and then wave breaker or ink storm.

I mained the L-3 Nozzlenose in Splatoon 2, and am also playing it in 3, and I really don't like its kit. The L-3 has had 5 different kits between 1 and 2, and they gave it a kit based on the lamest of those kits with curling bomb baller. I would've even preferred toxic mist wail 5.1, since it at least stands to benefit from that sub weapon. Luckily the L-3 is still a good main weapon and crab is very strong, especially at L-3's ideal range, so it's no undercover brella situation, but still, that damn curling bomb doesn't fit at all, and its not uncommon that I go full games without ever using it. I very much agree with your stance about having multiple kits that fill different playstyles, which is why when I made the 2 new kits I want for the L-3, I tried not to cross into vanilla L-3's current role as a support that constantly paints for special, since with any other sub and that playstyle, vL-3 would be outclassed. For the first new kit I want, obviously, I want burst bomb. L-3 D had it in 1 and 2, and it has to come back. The L-3 D has also historically been aggressive for a mid range support weapon, so I also want an aggressive special. The special I chose was Killer Wail 5.1 so that it can play aggressive in a similar way to 52 and inkbrush, and the chip damage from it can easily reduce the shots to kill to one burst. This is my ideal L-3 kit that I want to see. The second kit I want to see will have splash wall, like the Kensa L-3. I loved the way this weapon could make a stand in an area with its good range and protection, and the only thing I think was off was that stamp was only okay at that. For the special, I wanted something that was more broadly useful than Wail, but not as much as Crab, to be a sort of middle ground between special reliance and sub reliance. The special I want to see on this kit Wave Breaker. I think this fits the KL-3's playstyle of holding down an area, and it helps against one of L-3's weaknesses being dualies, because dodge rolls can really mess with the burst fire of the L-3. I dont think this special is as game changing as crab, so it hopefully won't fully outclass vL-3 while also providing a third unique playstyle. So for the L-3, the vanilla kit fills a midline paint support/special reliant role, the second kit should fill the aggressive slayer role, and third kit should fill the defensive skirmisher role. This would be the ideal world for me as an L-3 main. Also I disagree with your stance that no close range weapons should get beakons because beakons on a brush was hilarious and absolutely should come back.

i personally have a lot of qualms with the flingza's vanilla kit. in borrowing from the foil kit, it seems that the devs have decided that the flingza is supposed to be a back line -- giving it tenta missile (which i just have a personal grudge against) and the sub of ink mine, which feels really bad for a weapon that i really want to use in the middle of chaos. it's honestly a downgrade from the foil which had suction bomb, and though i understand it's not in a large need of a bomb... ink mine? really? i'd much prefer wall, or if they wanted a more passive kit, beacon. super hoping for something more aggressive soon.

@@durdleduc8520 I wish I could... Thats not how the special was designed and it could literally stop already if Nintendo gave it a cooldown... But the special itself is supportive and better used in a safe position from the Mid/FrontLines. People try to tag everybody but if you ARENT farming them relentlessly, you probably only want to Missile the targets that are most important to actually tag. This way, they have to deal with more Missiles, which means more displacement, and more time for a teammate to follow up on the Missiles. If youre closer while still being safe tho, you can follow up on your own Missils, which is a strong option since you always see the enemy while theyre trying to dodge. Or... you could just spam them at the back of the map because Nintendo doesnt want to give them cooldown... thats cool too I guess... Seriously tho, not a backline special, just needs some tweeking so its not so spammable.

While I agree that mines are certainly not the best sub for an aggressive weapon, they're also not necessarily the worst either since you can use them to help guard mid when you're trying to hold it by placing them forward a bit by common approach paths or back a bit to guard rear flank paths, or if your pushing and have to fall back they are a great way to punish anyone who chases you while also allowing to you to know your pursuers movements to escape or splat them better, now how well that works for a roller compared to the Undercover that caused me to learn these tactics I can't say, but it is something to keep in mind as they do still deal damage and tell you where the now weakened players are. The other big downside I do find is that how well ink mines can perform can be somewhat map dependent which definitely hurts the sub with Hagglefish being one of the better maps for mines.

I personally really like when the squid beakon is paired with a very aggressive weapon. If you place it around a corner at the front lines, you enable others to push the line back by enabling to jump to a location that is much closer to the front lines if the other team doesn't notice it. Also, I like sneaking behind the main lines and placing one there, so my team can ink the other team's base without them knowing or surround the other team.
@MineNAdventurer
@MineNAdventurer Жыл бұрын
Tbh Beacon on front line weapons isn't 100% a bad thing if used aggressively as with beacons you can constantly flank foes until they attack your super jump spot and you can allow your allies to push farther up to get a nice pincer push. The real issue is that defensively using beacons is just much better, while yes the beacon lets you get to the backlines within seconds, its so much better to have it on a backline in case a frontline gets into their area so your allies can still jump to mid safely, as well since the beacon is in the enemy's area it can be destroyed or camped to prevent them from staying (unless your just team ignores it like it always seems my random teams do). Generally it is a good pair for hyper aggressive weapons that want to keep poking at the back line but this is only really in random queue, in comp it just isn't a good sub to give to hyper aggressive weapons and while having some casual weapons is fun, adhering to the comp players is always better in multiplayer shooters.

Tbh despite the beakon on dapples being "bad" for the weapon i found it works really well. I run a main of sub power and qsj so jumping to the beakons are near INSTANT and i plan on having a main of special saver and then all my subs are quick re. That way if i die i can jump back to mid immediately with little time and if i have cooler i can do that EVEN BETTER

I think it’s very good that the dapple dualies have squid beacons instead of bombs. The dapples are such an aggressive weapon and kill very quickly so I think bombs would make them too strong. The weapon has great mobility so you could easily get to the most advantageous spots for squid beacons

I know this might sound weird but my idea is that as a compromise, a weapon consists of only a main and a sub. The specials can be customized. This could increase the degree of freedom a weapon set has while still being reasonably balanced.

Awesome video! I think the sloshing machine gear right now is really good (fizzy + booyah bomb). I wonder what a secondary kit that would be just as good could be? I like the idea of point sensor, as i think burst bomb would be way too powerful, but that reduces the combo of sub+1hit=death. Maybe crab tank for that extra range. What do you think?
@Kattail__

as a Tri-Stringer main, the biggest thing I'll say is that since I'm simply do not like the design of point sensor, I think that kit but with angle shooter instead could be cool, as if you slightly miss but get two of your shots in you can also follow up with an immediate dagger kill, which I think could be a very fun synergy, allowing it to get quick kills on low targets while still being all support

Fantastically done video! Though as a common user of the SShot Pro, I'd maybe not put the torpedo and booyah bomb together on there as I could see that as potentially a biiit too useful in some instances. I do think Nintendo is way too keen to keep to tradition on a lot of weapons though and definitely could use some other kits from the norm given how poorly some pair definitely. A lot of weapons feel lacklustre and less enticing to play due to playstyles and pairings with some subs and specials

I’m a dynamo main and as much as I like the current kit, it doesn’t really lend itself to my aggressive playstyle, primarily due to having no real options to get in without putting itself at a huge risk or being extremely slow. Here’s what I’d give a new dynamo: Curling bomb I would prefer giving it burst bombs, but the main weakness of the dynamo is ink management, and giving it a bomb that lets it spam bombs alongside its huge OHKO range would be a bit much. It would be fun to combo with it but that may also have some extreme consequences, so I chose curling bombs to give the dynamo some much needed mobility Reefslider Speaking of mobility, another huge weakness is that if you get caught off-guard, which happens all the time while playing aggressively, there’s no way to fight back since the inking speed of the dynamo is extremely slow. I planned to give the dynamo reefslider more as a “get out of jail” card than as an aggressive option. Due to how slow the dynamo is to swing, using the reefslider as an aggressive option would be such a high-risk option that it won’t be worth trying in most situations. (Mainly due to the fact that any smart enemy is gonna run out of your instability range by the time your special has exploded) Overall, this kit is meant to give the dynamo options to get in and use it’s oppressively large ohko range to it’s advantage, because having a sprinkler and a tacticooler REALLY don’t lend to it’s sheer power

I think point sensor and wave breaker on tri-stringer is too redundant. I like wave breaker as a special but I think I’d prefer burst bomb for the combo potential and quick wall paint. Or if they buff angle shooter I could see that working well as the direct lets you combo and you can still track. Though if they go with angle shooter I think wave breaker as another tracker is still too redundant so I think Booyah bomb or ink vac would be more likely.

okay hear me out on this custom kit idea, the devs give us the options between 2 subs and 2 specials and we get to pick between the 2 of those for the kit, so we have the ability to make 3 kits for each weapon, and then they could have like a tally mark next to the weapon icon on the hud to show which of the 3 combo's you're using. or the weapon skin changes to a new recolour I know this would be extremely broken and would lead to alot of unused subs and or specials because the other is just better but hey it's fun and still alot more balanced then every weapon having access to every sub+special, and the devs can still have fun making kits

Idk... i just love the splatter shot Decent range, good ink consumption, good ink coverage, quick kills (3 direct hits) And its current version of having a special that can attack snipers means i can delay using my special until a long range weapon is around. Otherwise i dont need to use my special. Just backstep and aim for the shorter ranged weapons, strafe and close the distance for the mid ranges that have a BIT of a better reach, and if all else fails use a bomb. I love that the splat bomb times perfectly with the enemy's jump time. (I try other weapons, but theres just something about a shooter and just holding the trigger that sloshers, rollers, blasters, etc just lack.... As you can tell i love nzap and jet squelcher as my alt weapons. But who doesnt love a roller or the blob lobber. Im not a pro but just enjoy tyring different weapons and the shooters and just the most fun for me (with the splatter shot being the best)

I think Splattershot Pro's kit is still pretty solid, even without a bomb. It allows the user to focus on an aggressive playstyle and tends to perform very well! Angle Shooter pretty much gives it combo potential. I'm not really a fan of Suction Bombs on vanilla Splattershot/Hero Shot though. Surely it's a spiritual successor to the Tentatek kit from S1 but I would've preferred Burst Bombs instead

Hey ! Thats kinda interesting how you analysed the kits in the game. Though, i feel like it's more of pointing the downgrades than showing what they did really good. But hey, we are players, we like renting. For the nd striger bow, i've already mentioned what i thought about it previously, but i'm glad we agree on the Wave Breaker. It's what it deserve (SURELY they wont give it something like reefslider, no trust me they wont ^^'). However, i was more thinking of mines, but it actually depends on what playstyle you are. I Thought that mines could help the weapon to have an escape when they get flanked or even try to turn on them. In a solo Q environment, that would be ok i guess ? But point sensor is more like a competitive idea and would work as a living radar with falling explosives. Keep going on the good content ! And glad you diversify it with more general content and less Tri-Stringer (i like bow vids, but you might end up at a dead end so great choices !)

I agree with everything in the video. One thing I'd like to see is a rotating set of weapons kits for anarchy battles. They could swap in different kits every season and shake up the meta, ie only one kit per weapon would be accessible during that season. (The non-competitive modes can have access to all the kits they've released.)

Another advantage of kits rather than free choice over kits you didn't mention is that it helps makes the game more approachable to newer or younger players. Picking from 52 weapons that each come with a kit baked in is a less daunting task than picking from 52 weapons, 15 specials and 13 subs. And, yes, it isn't that bad for new players since Splatoon gradually opens the options up, and you could still do that with subs and specials alongside mains, but even then - Picking from e.g. 10 weapons, 4 subs and 4 specials is still a more daunting task than 10 weapons each with their own sub and special baked in.

I don't think having squid beakons on an aggressive frontline weapon is necessarily a bad thing, so long as the special provides the offense you're lacking from not having a bomb sub. Beakons can be placed behind enemy lines for flanking, which most front line weapons like to do. As long as the special isn't also lacking in offense, it's fine. For example, I wouldn't mind the dapple dualies having beakons if they had a long range aggressive special like trizooka or killer wail 5.1, over the tacticooler (which COULD also work on the dapples given an actual bomb to help close the gap vs longer ranged weapons)

Love wavebreaker on the bow but nothing needs point sensor, period. If you are using the bow's range and remaining game aware, you shouldn't need to mark enemies on both sub and special. Give the bow splash wall for more survivability close range. If you anticipate getting rushed down, pop a wall out to stop them in their tracks and give you a chance at a charge shot or a couple partials and then retreat if needed (versus toxic mist just mildly slowing them down so you can hopefully retreat). For point sensor to make sense in this game where all other marking abilities do damage, it either needs to be combined with toxic mist or have a little bit of chip damage.

as a fellow tri stringer player, i really don't want point sensor- especially paired with Wave Breaker. It would feel kinda redundant, and a ton of stringers run thermal ink (myself included). I'd rather have splash wall as a utility sub, purely because it could make it contest e-liter, but also take even more angles that other anchors can't take. That combined with wave breaker means it'd be able to put wave breaker in more spots, mire safely. I do really like wave breaker on it tho, that's my dream special for it. Wall is probably my dream sub tho

At 4:40 there is a slight error, you had the image of Ghidorah with only one silly head, when it should have been all of them, maybe the serious one for the Wiper, but truthfully, all of them. Torpedo is only good for picking off people already hurt or messing with people that don't know how it works, or newbs with crab tank. Outside of those, every single other bomb sub is better and some support subs are arguably better. It doesn't kill, it costs almost as much as a splat bomb, and it can be destroyed (yes you're reading this correctly) with a fart in the wind. If it was at least not destroyable, it would be okay, probably right behind curling bomb, but because it becomes useless when destroyed, along with MANY other basic issues with how it functions, just about any other bomb would do better than it on any kit. People think because it "can" kill means its good. Reminder that sprinkler can also kill if you think that...

As a high level slosher player, you make a lot of good points concerning not overshadowing other weapons so to not give weapons their best kit, but a problem with that is that you can create half kits, a great example would be sloshing machine in splatoon 2 its vanilla kit had autobomb which was okay but stingray was a terrible special for it to have but worked out because it was the only non backline ray weapon that was decent, the neo kit had a good special but it had pointsensor which hurt it greatly, and the kensa machine as you mentioned has splashdown, as someone who played machine throughout s2 it always felt really bad to have a half kit so personally i would hope that could be avoided at all costs, as for the slosher kit i think its cool in concept but with reefsliders current state it wouldnt be great (reefsliders problem is that once you finish exploding you are stuck and cant do anything but you dont have any s unlike baller so a well timed bomb will kill you and you cant do anything about it not to mention you can parry the explosion with squidroll not even guaranteeing a kill and if they parry, you are almost certainly dead) instead i would like crab a lot more as crab tanks explo shot could combo nicely as well as rolling someone over with crab like you could with baller in s2
