I made this soup! I simmered the hock for 4 hours on the stove. Removed the hock and stripped it down. Fried the garlic, onion and carrots in the same pot on the stove. I then strained the stock into the slow cooker. Once the fried veggies were done I also put them in the slow cooker, along with the split pea and cooked ham. Added white pepper and herbs. Left it to slow cook for 8 hours over night and woke up to the smell of fresh pea and ham soup on a cold Autumn window in Western 🇦🇺 🥰🥰🥰 DELICIOUS!! Thank you Sheryl 🥰

I just bought a beautiful large ham hock from a specialty butcher and have some yellow split peas, I’ll start the stock this morning! I’m going to add neeps because I found two small ones at the market, orange sized.

Oooh one of my favourites. With a chunk of buttered bread or plain scones to dip into it. I could taste it though the screen & it was making my mouth water. 🤤 I was going to make mushroom soup this weekend but I'm thinking a huge pot of split pea & ham bone to see me through the week would be better. Thank you Cheryl. [Nice to see someone else still using a proper soup spoon too rather than a dessert soon!] ATB, James.

this is absolutely my favorite soup to make. It is quite customizable. I always add tons of extra veggies. No one else in my household likes it so I experiment with what I add. Also I make the largest amount possible with the ingredients I have because it freezes quite well. I always thank myself later when I can have a serving of this delicious soup for dinner another day!

Cheryl, love your posts. Brings back memories of my Scottish mothers cooking. Especially the soups. I remember her putting the long ribs from the bacon into the soup and when it was cooked piling the ribs on a plate for us children to eat the bacon off them. She used to make a peas and barley soup using those hard green peas she soaked overnight. Anyone have that receipt. I would be very grateful.

One of my favourite soups that i like to make with a chunk of ham, or a ham bone. Very similar except for chopped celery & seasonings... i use salt & pepper, 4 bay leaves & parsley. I love the bay leaf flavour so much, lots of bay. And either yellow or green split peas.

Looks lovely! If I may, I found through trial and error, if you add a diced parsnip it really improves the flavor. There used to be a product called Soup Starter in the States, and split pea was the bomb! After trying to replicate it many times, the parsnip flavor was the key. Thanks for sharing. 😘

That was interesting. We make an nearly identical soup (ärtsoppa for those that want to google it) here in Sweden and residues of that soup have been found on Bronze Age pottery. I wonder if that is yet another dish the Vikings brought over to your shores?
