In this video I will introduce you to 8 motorcycles powered by a two-stroke "split-single" engine. In the entire history of the motorcycle industry, only 8 manufacturers have used this type of engine : Garelli, Puch, DKW, EMC, TWN, Manet, IsoMoto and Csepel.
Many thanks to all bikers and motorcycle fans who contributed their videos to our motorcycle channel. If you have a motorcycle at home that you built yourself, or an old, interesting or unusual motorcycle that you would like to show, please send me short videos from your camera or mobile phone to: We Transfer - jawatinomoto@gmail.com
I will process your videos and publish them on our motorcycle KZbin channel - Jawa Tino

thank you for that, I don't normally care for the sound of two strokes but that split single has an interesting exhaust sound, that Manet was beautiful

Manet was great looking, and love the simplicity, nothing that’s not needed

Ahh, memories. When I was a kid, there was a guy lived up the road from us who owned a Puch split single. All week he would use use his Honda cd185 Benly for work, but on Saturday morning between 8 and 9 o'Clock, he would polish his bike in the garage with the door open, then, after got his riding gear on, he would start it up and ride off down the road on it and the sound of it would make me feel warm inside! So thankyou so much for bringing these amazing little machines back to us!

Fun fact. I live 25 mile east of Cincinnati Ohio. Between me and two of my neighbors we have eight 250 Twingles a mix of ALSTATES and PUCH and add to that the 50cc Sabre's and 175cc we have more than 20 Puch's. Thanks for the video history lesson.

Do you want to sell the 175? I am seventy four years old and would love to have another bike to ride around town, I am not a speculator just love the old two strokes

It was said that when the supercharged DKW was raced in The Isle of Man, it was so loud that it could be heard in Blackpool (in England)!!

Interesting explanation of how the engine was built. Around the 1950/60 era Dr. Joe Erlich designed and built a semi successful split single racing 250 c.c. machine. The EMC PUCH. Was quite quick for it's time, not too reliable, was overshadowed by the arrival of the Japanese machines. But was an excellent effort by virtually a one man organisation. Any one got photos or details?

The manet is very cute, because it's so simple. I have a D.K.W. from 1955. I like the smell of it.

So many thanks for showing the Csepel too! They problem was the cooling. They are unique motorbikes here in Hungary too. Thank you very much for this video!

Interesting. I would've expected them and the EMCs to have less problems with that. Because they made the smart choice to cool the exhaust piston by controlling the intake with it, instead of using the already well cooled transfer port piston for both.

No narration I'd like to hear what advantage it was thought this design would have. Also a description of the early bikes that used it.

They sound sluggish for a 2-stroke. Having more than a 180 degree powerstroke would it flatten it's torque and H.P. curve ? ? ? . . . No sure what the engineers were thinking on this one.

I think they were going for efficiency and simplicity. The two piston design changes the port timing overlap. Ive owned several and it smells and sounds like a two stroke but feels just like a four stroke. Has good torque and very linear power curve. Ive only owned the puch versions and they were very reliable and pleasant to ride

Once transverse porting became more common, after 1946, split singles offered no advantages, only disadvantages, in performance when compared to conventional 2 stroke singles, twins & tripples.
