Nice. I personally enjoy the initial milling over the more glamourous tasks like the joinery or finishing. Probably because I never have any issues with milling, but the joinery and finishing.... 👍

Kuffys Woodwork haha, yeah, there’s always some part of a build that you dread and others that you love!

Is ash less costly than beech in the UK? Why did you pre-rip the the boards with the bandsaw prior to ripping with the table saw?

Jim Scheltens I can’t remember the price difference but I don’t think it was much different. Some boards were ripped on the bandsaw and I think then later on I had to use the tablesaw for some reason. But it was months ago and I can’t remember the reason why! It may have been that I was using the tablesaw for cross cutting and I didn’t want to change the blade over at that time. So I just used the bandsaw.

Beech is usually cheaper. I just bought a fair amount of 50mm thick, 170mm wide Beech from Duffield timber recently and they were about £20+Vat for 2m lengths, whereas the Ash was about 20% more. I suppose initial ripping on the bandsaw is safer...

Andy Midd thanks Andy. I wanted to use ash as I’d used it before in a few projects and wanted to reduce the number of variables in this bench build. As explained above I think it was more of a small shop issue and using the bandsaw at one point because it was easier and less blade changes. I have to move the machines around a lot in my small shop.

Nice bench, just working my way through your video series. As a matter of interest roughly how much did all the timber cost? I am also in the UK. Many thanks

Hi robump, thanks. I bought the timber back in 2017 so I doubt prices will be the same now and of course it depends who you buy from. But it was about £1k as far as I can recall. You could change the walnut to something else to save a lot of money. Ash, beech, oak or maple seem to be popular for the main bench. HTH?

@@SteveCashmoreWoodworks Thanks, that is really useful. I am working my way through the series - that bench crafted hardware is very smart!
