Architectural fun fact: those projecting supports are called "flying buttresses". Look at you mixing Gothic design principles into your modern edifice! Considering how grand that tram station is, I think it ultimately needs to be heart of a much larger endeavour, perhaps a hillside radial city with the solar tower at its centre. Once you have dominion over the planet and a foothold in space, it could be your corporate headquarters! A poetic contrast to your beginnings hiding underground.

I love to incorporate flying butresses into SE and Avorion ship designs. It gives them that WH40k vibe. PS: Have You ever been to Kutna Hora in Czech Republic? There is a cathedral of st. Barbora which is quite a masterpiece of Gothic architecture.:-)

Hey Splitsie, Love the series. love the over-engineering and esthetics. I played around with tunnel miners on rails and got the same problem with the mining debris getting in the way of the welder. My solution was to put the rail on the ceiling since the debris tends to fall down. I had some success with landing gears to move the miner but the most reliable version was with merge blocks every X blocks (depending on the length of the miner and piston range). The miner would project it's tracks, weld it and mine while stuck to the previous merge block. The projection has set length from merge block to merge block. Several versions of the projections: straight. 30 deg up. 30 deg side. The miner has 5 projectors, one for each blueprint (forward, up, down, left, right). 2 rotors would align the miner to the blueprint direction and timer blocks set it all up. If Klang cooperates you end up with smooth straight tunnels. Good luck!
@Xander_RT
@Xander_RT 6 жыл бұрын
For an automatic tram you could use "control" blocks at each segment that sensors could pick up to direct the next segment. Since you want to travel both directions you need to account for that. Say put 5 blocks on the relative right of the tram and have 5 sensors read the blocks. If there is a block, continue straight, up, down, left, right, depending in which block is there. Note: turns only work with landing gear since merge blocks snap in a fixed direction. No issue since you plan to build a 2D turntable anyway :-)

This tram is going to have rails above and below, though now that I think about it, I might do some tests and see if I can put rails on each side and achieve the same effect... this could be exciting if that works :)

Splitsie Since your track will only consist of several grids, could you not connect the segments with rotors or connectors in order to transfer power? Or even better, incorporate a conveyor line into the track! Don't think of it as simplifying things; think of it as an added challenge! Furthermore, it would allow you to dedicate the tram to ferrying things that can't be transported via conveyors: passengers, vehicles, salvage, sandbags, etc. If you absolutely must make it more challenging, you could make the tram big enough to transport the Goose and/or trailer...
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 жыл бұрын
The grids won't be connected as Space Engineers doesn't like it when you make something that's quite so long - it tends to disproportionately harm performance, especially with air tightness. So that limitation almost makes the tram necessary :P

If you were not running a conveyor system up the tower for the turrets, you could have used batteries as the core so your Solar Axe Tower could store a huge amount of energy ready to be siphoned off to the tram. Maybe the batteries should be stacked under your waiting area / reception at the closed end of the station.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 жыл бұрын
I could have, and I thought of adding a bunch of batteries to the tower base, but then I remembered that you lose power transferring from one battery to another, so I wanted to limit the transfers to just from tram to base if I can, or use merge block batteries at each end - which might be even more fun as I could have them waiting at the station as you say ;)

So I saw you mention using a facecam in the In one of your editor's notes. I'd just like to say that if you are planning to use one that it would only really take away from the gameplay as it obscures an entire corner. I also personally prefer just listening to your voice while watching you play the game since an entire corner reserved for just a bustshot is really only distracting.

Splitsie, you could put a projector on a couple of rotors and have it project a drilling guide from one station to the other, either by having a very long guide or by tweaking the offsets. that way you will know for sure where you are going to pop out , or if any part of the track will break the surface. You can even have an L shape at the end to see exactly where it pops out while still drilling to an underground spot
@Splitsie

I'm hoping to make the tram do the drilling for me, we'll see how that goes though, still haven't worked out how I'll place the track blocks into the voxel accurately enough :/

For the trailer connectors I personally think it'd be great to further underline their individual designs and purposes by giving each a different connector (and by the way sorry for recommending using rotors back in your tutorial, I'm kinda used to building in space so I've never really had this issue before)

If you're running a tram line from the base to the new solar tower, you could just connect them and have the power directly transferred. But I love the needless complexity :)
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 жыл бұрын
The somewhat logical argument is that the bases won't actually be connected since I'll be breaking the track into multiple separate grids as a grid of those dimensions is something SE doesn't usually like :P

You already know about setting GPS markers as tunnel guides, but here's a technique that may be useful to you. Build yourself a really, really, really long rod of armor cubes in creative mode, like 50-75km long, then blueprint it. Back in this world, mount a projector on a tilt-yaw rotor arrangement with a remote and a gyro. Then use the remote to aim the super-long projection at your desired exit point on your solar tower. (I'm a video behind, so pardon me if you already solved this :P ). You'll need Reggie to fine-tune the aim of the guide beam, but once you have it aimed, lock the rotors and the gyro. Then you can just follow the projection. It might not work as well for you with your plan to follow a bendy path, but at least it could give you some idea where your tunnel is going and what you'll be up against. Good luck :)
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 жыл бұрын
I probably should have a blueprint of something like that, as this is just one of several situations where it could be useful :)

The roof areas in the axe station are 5x5 - you might be able to use the big 3x3 glass window pane in the center, surrounded by 1x1's, to give that big-window look. Then again, with the rest of it being relatively victorian, the spars on the 1x1's and 1x2's might look more interesting.

Recently helped someone with a script and a radar-connected hover train... the train of course uses the hover engines mod, but that could extremely simplify this whole rail thing while still achieving your angled tunnel desires and compatibility with an elevator. No need to transition tracks etc.... I know you like to stay vanilla and engineering is a ton of fun with problems like these.... I just can't help but think the challenges in this one are possible but will be tough to nail! Good luck! I look forward to the results either way! :)

I should, though I've got that set up on the butterball I've not regularly ventured far from the base in the other ships so I keep forgetting - my fear with the nugget though, is that when loaded at the base it comes out very heavy and I wouldn't want to accidentally build up too much speed only to be stopped by the tower :/

Splitsie, you were talking about a done to carry H2 bottles to you, why not keep a repair done stationed at the solar tower and have a small cargo/industrial area either underneath or above the control center, and just use those facilities to conduct repairs, plus that way you could use that as an auxiliary base, in case your original base gets overrun, or station your own attack and/or mobile sandbags drones their, just in case you need some reinforcements to help in your defense.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 жыл бұрын
I probably will have a number of functional facilities there eventually, but the mini drone would be useful wherever I'm building or running out of hydrogen - as long as I have antenna range I can get help to myself :P

slap a chalet and museum in the axe tower and then the tram becomes the tourist way up and you can make a fancy building for the tourists ... with some fancy underground apartments that mock the actual bunks with comfy bunks for hotel guests and what not.
@0623kaboom
@0623kaboom 5 жыл бұрын
you already have a tunnel blueprint with the base tunnel all you need is the miner to dig it and a welder to build it .... then you have room for maybe 2 sets of tracks or 1 track and one roadway for quick climbs to the ridge instead of gyro flying all the time ...also would make for a way to get the tank up easy and safe at the same time .... a simple line of welders and diggers on a piston a tunnel width wide and then as it digs and rises it builds the floor and walls along the way and all you need do is move it along for each section fudging as needed ... and keeping it supplied ... which you can do with the conveyor pipes along the tunnel as you build just moving its connector along as you go ... the added bonus is you now open up many new potential vehicle bays and launch sites like making a HUGE hanger for your space lifter vehicle ... which also allows you to build a giant printer pit the size of a tunnel section to make large sections to add to a space ship in pieces ... thus making a need for a crawler and a way to add them in to the growing ship ... maybe even automating the transfer from printer to ship assembly for welding so the arm can go work on the next bit once freed from the section it just moved. . with each section being a self contained unit like med bay or cockpit or cargo ... or assembly etc then you can literally build any ship with section blocks like lego and shape the ship however you please ... heck even add a hanger bay for something like a small space fighter or tug to handle the fine docking control or fine ship movements ... useful in the goose bay as well for moving trailers without the goose always at home... or for repowering and picking up stuff that fell down or pooped out before it got safe
@Natharneal

Using a rotor you should be able to have a slightly angled track in 2 or 3 pieces as long as you construct the wheels to be able to hook around that. Its been done before on the workshop. You would not need to have it needing to actually move.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 жыл бұрын
I might have to test to see if the design I've used can tolerate it, the tests I did attempting to come up with something had used flat to 2x1x1 transitions and I couldn't manage that, but with smaller transitions using rotors it might be ok - that would certainly simplify things greatly - nice one :)

Hay Splitsie, be for digging out the tram tunnel maybe you should mark the center of your tram station at the ax with a GPS marker, so you can line up your tram tunnel with the station and the elevator you are going to put in, to make the transition to the station with the tram elevator easier for you... Maybe, you know, it was just a thought...
@Splitsie

The marker that I've got is pretty much the center of the station, so it should be what I need. The challenge is going to be placing the new sections of rail accurately from a guide projected on a subgrid (which means I can't weld from it) :/

The suspense is killing me! Even more so now that I know you actually did mean a "Tram" I thought at first it was going to be the original design of an automated atmo drone that would ferry supplies and power. This idea is even better. My first thought is that's allot of extra blocks being added to the world! but if it's just a single line of blocks and build a car with wheels that run on either side it should be pretty cool.

A while ago I played around with a huge solar tower, set up horizontally, with a built in landing pad. Near the pad was several ports where I'd attach huge battery packs to recharge and then haul them back to base to power my base. Personally...I would have built the elevator as a platform with only railings, so when it got to the roof, it would be hideously obstructing the view out from the roof. Also, I would have placed the piston under the elevator, and that little bump when you step on would drive me absolutely nuts! Still...you are WAY better at this game than me and I can't wait to see what happens with the rail. (Don't spoil it for me, as I am watching the series chronologically.)
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 5 жыл бұрын
I always seem to like to make elevators enclosed, but it certainly wasn't needed here, the railings only approach would have worked just as well, plus the button panel functions well as a railing anyway :)

rotors and pistons and a weighted moving trellis mid track could case a lot of headaches..... (clanggeddon) what about a monorail using the atmo thrusters to hover along in the 'tube'? possible just as complex with sensors to keep wall distance in check ...

The nice thing about the tram is that it needs very little power to move a lot of mass - sure with the new tower that's not a big issue, but I still find it fun to build with wheels wherever I can - plus the thought of cleaning up an accident with a hover tram in the tunnel gives me nightmares :P

Great videos! Your upcoming tunneling project has me curious. I'm sure it's down too far to dig your tunnel to, but how far down is the bedrock or lower limit you can drill to? and what does that surface look like? Obviously your new tower is on one of the tallest peaks, and bedrock would probably be farther down than the horizontal distance to your base. Not worth digging that far. Or can you actually drill through the center of the world in SE? About that elevator out on the edge of your roof. It sure takes away from your view in that direction. Please think about just a platform elevator with handrails (no walls or roof), or even just stairs for that one floor level built closer to the tower and off the viewing areas edge. If you do go with the elevator there anyway, how about glass? But you do you. Just offering suggestions and happy to watch regardless.
@Duke00x
@Duke00x 6 жыл бұрын
Technically you can drill all the way through the planet. Though when you get to the center things get deleted or they use too. Making it hard to get all the way through. Also doing so kills your sim speed and is likely to crash the game.

Thanks for the info, Duke00x. I enjoy these SE videos very much, but the computers i currently use are too low spec to run it, and my last gaming computer (laptop) that possibly could is still using Vista. I might upgrade to 7, but pretty sure it won't except 10.
@Duke00x
@Duke00x 6 жыл бұрын
I know your pain. I have been watching SE veideos for a few years now (before planets) and even bought it once (again before planets). But my computer couldn't run it (it because it took me 5 minutes to move across the old starting platform) so I returned it right way. I have gotten a new computer since then but even it has no chance of running it (it is 5 years newer so it has twice the memory and a bit better/faster processor but is otherwise still a cheap potato). Even if I add another ram stick and double my ram I will just be getting up to 8 GB of RAM (Like I said cheap potato). I have been looking into building my own computer but with my budget (about $500) I am still looking at coming up short and having to save up money again to add a graphics card to the build later. And that would double the price of the computer. And even then I am not sure how will it would run it without also upgrading other parts like the CPU. So I am thinking about waiting even longer to try and save up more money and just build a better one from the start. But that means waiting at least another year or two (likely more like 5 or 6 years being the only reason I have the $500 now is because it is what is left of a lump sum I got last year and I am not going to get another one so I will have to save the rest out of my monthly income and I am lucky to have $10 or $20 left after bills every month meaning I am lucky if I can save $100 or $200 a year meaning it would take me two or three years just to cover the graphics card let alone the other upgraded parts needed to make sure it could handle it. And that is if everything goes perfect and I don't have something I have to spend the money on first).
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 жыл бұрын
It's rough that the requirements are quite high, though hopefully it will come closer into reach when Nvidia release their next series of cards - rumoured to be happening in the next month or two as that should push all the graphics cards prices down, and thankfully SE's requirements aren't going up (yet) :)

The pipes mod that's on the large grid blocks acts as a full conveyor, however the small grid small conveyors can only handle certain items (like ingots and ore) they can't move most of the components. With the rotor there on the wall the transition does look a little strange, but maybe with a conveyor junction beneath the rotor it would fix that
