it s ALIVE ... LIVE !
@Wakeupandsniffthecoffee Жыл бұрын
I have this same Kia and my first experience was these alarms. The person that had it, sold it cheap. I went after an O2 sensor and it was my first intro into O2 sensors, fuel trims and date showing before and after the catalytic converter. I finally had a mobile mechanic work in it and did a tune-up. Because the plugs are in the firewall side of the engine and require removing the intake to get to them, only the front plugs had been changed, probably in it's lifetime. So he did the intake removal and new plugs and did a good throttle body cleaning. That took care of the check engine light and the car was very responsive after that. It also opened my eyes to just cleaning the throttle body and intake manifolds of all the carbon. I'm doing my PT Cruiser right now. Started as a radiator hose replacement, but so far I've done the whole throttle body, intake and intake manifold, right to the engine input where the valves are visible. Plus replacing the vacuum and pcv valve. One hose was completely blocked between the intake and the vacuum brake booster. Soon I will have a lot of the old, cracked rubber and plastic parts replaced. Can't wait to see how it runs after.
@Wakeupandsniffthecoffee2 жыл бұрын
Great video. I bought the same year and model second hand for $500. First thing I had to deal with were bad air and fuel sensors or mixtures. I learned a lot, mostly on you tube about how the O2 sensors work and what happens before and after then. The original problem got fixed and I went on to many other fixes and still using the car. I like it and it runs great for 220,000 miles. Purrs like a kitten. I've done everything from brakes, complete jobs, wiper motor and wiper alignment, replaced front end of the exhaust, alternator and belt tensioner. So much fun. I figure I'm still way ahead financially compar d to buying a new car, making years of monthly payments and still spending money to upkeep and keep it within the warranty. Plus with KZbin, there isn't much I can't fix on my own.

There was a case in the UK when an engineer was told by a cardiologist that his condition was untreatable because of the impracticability of access and manipulation. The engineer went away and designed tooling. He presented this to the cardiologist which made way to a new technique in treatment. There ought to be more interdisciplinary co-operation.

Thank you Rainman! for the explanation on fuel trims. That is one mechanical term that always evades my thought process.
@paulwindisch14232 жыл бұрын
To add to Ray’s great explanation, short and long term fuel trims are designed to adjust for different altitudes. Back in the carbureted days, the carburetor jets would need to be resized based on where the vehicle was going to be normally operated, due to the less dense air condition at higher altitudes. Through the use of Baro and MAP sensors, Mass Air Flow, and oxygen sensors, engine control modules can now compensate automatically without mechanical intervention. They can also compensate for small problems. If the Kia in the video had a lesser vacuum leak, the code would not have set and likely no one would have noticed there was an issue.
@Thoridin582 жыл бұрын
Just had the same lean condition on a 2000 Kia Sportage (4cyl). Spent time searching for air leak on hoses or past intake gaskets. No apparent leaks found but then the Gods smiled on me and a MAF error code was posted. Replaced the MAF and all is well. Now to find the DAMN Evap error on my 2001 GMC Sonoma 4cyl. Hoping the Gods still like me.

Ray, hope you have a great long weekend. After watching many of your vids, I finally bought myself a cordless 1/2" impact😁 I should have bought one years ago. Living in the rust belt of Eastern Ontario, Canada, road salt is extremely hard on bolts and anything metal in particular. I am in the "process" of replacing the front brakes on my 2003 Silverado. What should be an easy peasy job is turning into a nightmare (just did all 4 rotors, pads, and calipers about 2 years ago, front wheel bearings 3 years ago) First of all, I get the front wheels off (used my new impact...worked awesome🤘) and noticed I had a broken front sway bar😲, end was broken, so ordered a new one, once again the impact was great, considering the sway bar was factory. Had to use a wheel puller to get the front left rotor off😜 I'm getting there, just waiting on parts to arrive. I appreciate what a tech goes through when working on vehicle repairs that should be a walk in the park but in actuality turn out to be hell on earth😆 Always a treat to just sit down and watch one of your videos and to take a break from rusty parts😜 Have a good one.

I notice the engineers have increased the internal resistance "ohms" every time I buy the part! It only sets the code off on the hottest day of summer! Just before i have to pass smog test for registration! What a nightmare! There must be a service note on this problem but I cant find it! Get a putty knife that painters and drywall finishers use. Grind a short groove in the end to just fit over the nipple that a small vacuum hose fits on. Then when you get a stubborn vacuum hose you can easily slip the groove in the putty knife over the nipple just past the hose and then use the putty knife to push the hose off the nipple. Prevents the damage that using a pair of pliers or anything else can cause when trying to pull the hose off that can happen to the hose and/or the nipple itself.
@marccarrier95892 жыл бұрын
Good video Ray except for one post I must clarify. Whether it's called an oxygen sensor, lambda sensor, wide band air fuel sensor, they all do one thing: measure OXYGEN content in the exhaust, not fuel. If an engine is running properly, all the oxygen should be getting consumed in the combustion process leaving nothing in the exhaust but carbon dioxide and water vapor (in an ideal world). If the engine has any kind of vacuum leak or lack of fuel, all the oxygen won't be consumed and the o2 sensor will report the higher o2 content.

IAC motor is basically what it is... idle air control. Kia had a lot of issues with those getting gummy too and standard throttle body cleaning often didn't clean them well enough. We used intake cleaners that we could mist into the breather tube while it was running to get those IAC passages cleaned the best. I have removed them and short soaked them but that is not advised, at least it wasn't back then.

It's been pretty much VOM meter, specific to system test equipment and knowledge of the particular system. And even then I'm not sure the diagnostics are on the level of this few hundred dollar scanner. We were just getting the 787 and newer 777 aircraft at the airline I worked for when I retired a few years ago.

Odd thing, no driveability issues, or change in fuel economy. Lesson learned.
