Just so you know, the 12 volt battery isn't for cranking the motor, the motor is actually started from one of the motor generators off of the high voltage traction battery. The 12 volt battery literally runs the car's computers and accessories. The biggest reason why it won't turn on when the 12 volt battery dies, is because the cars ECU doesn't turn on. If you were to cheat and only provide 12 volt power to the ecu, the rest of the car would turn on normally after the inverter has turned on because the inverter does charge the 12 volt system.

The original battery temperature sensor can be removed by pealing back the top sticker and popping the thermistor from its groove from behind what looks like a scant droplet of hot glue. I spent a long time trying to find the sensor itself before I realized how easy it was to remove. If you damage the actual sensing element, or need to solder a homemade replacement because you got another battery without the sensor, the thermistor itself can be replaced with the compatible Semitec 2kohm NTC Thermistor, (part number: 202AT-2). Due to this, I have been running with a UPS battery for a year now... Some of the 12v mechanical can load down the 12v too much before the HV battery can be engaged. That's what happened to me with my 2016 Prius. The ABS accumulator would kick on. As far as CCA, don't need much. Consider the ABS your "crank" load.

If I remember correctly, when the car is off, the "main" battery is completely disconnected. It is only connected via a relay powered by the 12v battery, therefore, the car doesn't have access to any electrons without the 12v.

I have owned a Fusion Hybrid since 2013. My first experience with the 12-volt battery was a cold January. The thing was so dead that it wouldn't light the dash. With this car I had to crawl through the back seat and pull the emergency trunk release. Only one battery will fit, and I had to remove part on the trunk liner as the hole is too small for the battery. It was a Royal PITA. Good thing about my car, no ants or crap in the trunk.

Yeah, I have one of those too. You can't let em sit for weeks without driving. Battery will die. 210k miles on my 2013 FFH SE and ac blows so cold, suspension is still good, brakes still good. Airbag light came on randomly though. Front passenger seat probably has a faulty sensor. They're good cars! Just picked up a 2013 ford cmax and it's a lot more performance than the fusion. Worse gas mileage. With spirited driving in Texas with 100 degrees and highway driving I have averaged 41mpgs in the fusion. Can't beat that!

Winter time you can look at one and see perfectly where someone had just sneezed on it. I once had one in a cafeteria, trash can right beside the machine. The company id10Ts were using the copier as a backboard for the trashcan. I called the manager out to it. Showed him the pop/food/yuck stains on the copier. As I recall, the stoke sensor deals with the brakes. When you apply the brakes, the hybrid system wants use regenerative braking, I.e., using the electric motors to slow the vehicle converting what would be brake heat energy into electricity. If you push hard on the brake pedal, the stroke sensor allows the hydraulic brakes to slow you. If you ever get some air in the brake hydraulic system and get a spongy pedal, it really shows up. As you are coming to a stop and reach about 5-mph (Canadians, do the math to k/ph ;-) ) the re-gen stops and the pedal falls from under your foot because of the air in the system. Major pucker factor as you are approaching the car in front of you ! The battery you replaced is likely an AGM battery as to not fill the trunk with hydrogen gas, although that might help with the ant problem.
@amzarnacht6710
@amzarnacht6710 2 жыл бұрын
The hydrogen won't affect the ants in the least - it can't get concentrated enough to be an issue with their respiration due to the fact the trunk is not sealing well at all (hence the wet and ants). The owner, however, might note the stench of hydrogen sulfide from a standard L/A battery crammed in the trunk unable to vent. Hydrogen Sulfide stinks to high heaven long, long before it's a fire risk.

The battery in the Toyota Camry Hybrids are an AGM deep cycle battery - and not a standard flooded lead acid one. They last super long for what they do - as they're more there to power the aux systems and other stuff. They're charged directly from the traction battery via a DC to DC convertor. They're not meant to throw out a ton of amps, as the highest drain parts hooked up to them are probably either the headlights or stereo.

Since it's a hybrid the engine doesn't run continuously so to show that it's ready to drive it says ready on the instrument cluster. The 12v battery is just for the computers, lights and fans. The starting is done by the hybrid battery, it has a big motor between the engine and transmission that takes the place of the torque converter. It's responsible for charging the hybrid battery and starting the engine. I love the videos.

I thought on Toyotas, they use a wankle engine that is tied directly to a generator. All the propulsion is electric. The engine has its own 12v battery, alternator and is electricity isolated from the 200v electric drive system. It makes it easy to use 12v from the standard parts bin that they build the standard gas version with. That was my understanding and I am not sure if this is how they are still built.
@chuckfreisinger1508

@@MrKornnugget Nope. Toyota hybrids drive the front axle with a combination of the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) and Motor Generator (MG). They also drive the rear axle with another MG in the AWD(i) models. There is no drive shaft connecting the ICE with the rear axle, so that leads to more legroom in the rear seating area. There is also no starter in their hybrids, as a MG spins up the ICE whenever it needs to start. The whole system is pretty fascinating as sometimes the MGs drive the axle, sometimes they are used to start the ICE, and sometimes they charge the batteries via regenerative braking. The Weber Auto KZbin channel has some really enjoyable videos that explain the system fully.

I'm pretty sure the reason they don't use one battery is to avoid electrocution/fire hazards in case of malfunction. The propulsion battery has to operate at higher voltages than the rest of the system. Transformers would also be a possibility, but could still malfunction, and are less efficient. The 12v battery is used to close the contacts for the propulsion battery when needed. This way it can be "shut off" when being worked on or is in an accident, this preventing shocks and fires. I'm no car expert though, but like to listen to them :)

The 12V battery in Toyota hybrids only power the electronics and accessories to get the car into "Ready" mode. After that, the High Voltage battery is used with the electric motors to spin the engine to start it when required. As such, the batteries don't have a CCA rating and instead have a Amp-hour rating. Basically it's there to boot up the car and once it's booted up the inverter takes over and provides power to the car when it's in the "Ready" state. That being said, the battery was bad since it looks like it has a bad cell and low voltage after charging. Any drop below 10V will cause issues with booting up.

Thing about some hybrids -- Hondas anyway -- is that the 12 volt battery only runs the electronics and, in an emergency, starts the engine. Otherwise the high voltage does the starting itself.

Ok that was kinda creepy, this morning I was listening to the radio, and they were talking about Toyota's new electric SUV and how there was a recall on them because they had a problem with the wheels falling off, I started thinking about how today's technician not only has to have mechanical knowledge, but they also need knowledge in the hybrid components and electrical parts that go beyond the normal systems, so I found it funny that today's episode was about a working on a hybrid.

pushing the START button in a hybrid without pressing the brake pedal puts the car in 'accessory' mode which means the electronics are working, but the car is not ready to drive. Thus you will not see the word 'READY' on your dashboard. Pressing the brake pedal then pushing the start button will put the car in fully active drive mode and the word 'READY' will display on the dash. However, there is no engine revving up as you push the start button because Hybrids start driving on battery power and the engine only turns on when the demand for power is greater than what the drive battery can supply, or if the battery runs low and needs to be recharged.

@@scott_meyer I just had a 12V battery replaced on my 2017 Highlander Hybrid. Parts + Labor = $367. It's nearly impossible to get a 12V Hybrid battery from anywhere other than a dealer, so I just let them install it. Access to the battery in the trunk is actually pretty easy, so if you can find one with the vent and temp sensor, you could probably save about $50 by doing it yourself.

I have like three of those small chargers for emergency use. The most I ever got out of one was a one time start. The rest, despite fully charging them, wouldn't even start a car. Beside those small ones, I've had the bigger battery packs, some with air compressor and similar issues. I don't have much faith in them now. I also have issues with the small stand alone portable air compressors. They barely handle putting air and the last one I had, slime brand, it's gauge runs about 12 psi hirer than it is. I've been running my tires about 10 psi lower than they should be.

That hybrid battery for a Toyota is 800,-us$ here in Denmark and plus 1/2 hour install charge wich is 75,-us$. Clearing the codes will cost you 40,-us$ on top of that. And thats why i drive a Mitsubishi Space Star (Mirage) It is a 1.2 manual shift and it is from 2014 and i drive around 30000-35000 km (18500-21700 us miles) a year and i now have close to 160000 miles on the clock and besides normal wear, the only thing that ever broke was a tire sensor. Toyota and Honda used to be the best Japanese cars but that was 20 years ago. The best ones now is Suzuki and Mitsubishi.

I'm sure a "specialty battery" isn't even available aftermarket, and I think all of you would be surprised to know that a standard 12-volt battery for your car is cheaper at the dealer than at Autozone, Oreily's, Napa, Advanced Auto, or any other car parts store. Needed a battery for my Mustang, it was $160-$185 aftermarket... $120 at the Ford dealership. I will never buy another battery from any aftermarket parts store, they just don't last and are more expensive (one exception and this is off the wall: Homedepot if they carry your battery it's the cheapest you will find) This is for Erie PA, you location may have different results.

Hybrids are an entirely different breed of vehicle. There is almost never CCA on the battery because the battery doesn't do any cranking. instead, the 12v just needs enough juice to engage the relay to the larger battery pack and the electric motor uses that to spin the engine to start it. I think, in my 2010 Prius, the battery was something like, 440 CCA? No alternator in these either, it uses a DC/DC converter to pull power from the main pack to charge the little battery. The reason for the two battery system is to protect the larger, more expensive and harder to charge (due to high voltage) battery from draining all the way. So the relay disconnects the main battery so it can't be drained and relies on the much easier to charge or replace 12v to connect it to the system. In a lot of ways, it's nice, there are less mechanical parts to go wrong. No starter, no alternator and the things that replaced them are a bit more robust and long lasting, so shouldn't ever need to be replaced outside of either a defect or a very long usage time. Downside, if they do go bad, they're not cheap or easy to replace. Personally, I drove my 2010 Prius up to 242,000 miles before I gave it to my sister and all I ever had to replace were wheel hubs, 12v once, brakes twice (last a long time if you use mostly regen braking) and a PCV valve. I have a 2016 at 140,000 miles, only thing I've replaced on that is 1 wheel hub and a half-shaft. I had a shop check the brakes on it during my last maintenance and they said the pads looked almost new. They were shocked when I told them they were original XD.
